Causes machine to shut down randomly. Ubuntu 10.10

Mar 08, 2011 dtaylorjones link
I'm running a Dell XPS M1530 laptop with the following key specs;

2.5 Ghz intel core 2 duo
4gb ram
Nvidia M8600 GT - latest drivers
Ubuntu 10.10 with all latest updates

The game launches and plays great on all the highest settings but after about 5-10 minutes of gameplay it causes my laptop to just turn off.
It doesn't initiate a shut down or anything the power just cuts straight off.

The machine doesn't appear to be getting too hot and gets much hotter when doing other tasks such as running Crysis without cutting out so I don't think it's over heating.

Also nothing else causes this issue just this game

This is a bizarre issue.

Any ideas?

I'd check your system logs and /var/log/Xorg.0.log for anything that looks suspicious.

Might want to see if theres an updated video driver available.

I'm running the latest Driver for my card.

EDIT: I timed the crashes to see if they revealed a pattern.

Power off at 00:05:53
and then again (after restart) at 00:04:17

The timer started from the moment I pressed launch from my Gnome desktop and stopped as soon as the power cut out.

There is a setting in-game under Graphics or Video that limits the framerate. Try setting that to something lower and seeing if it makes a difference. Could be the graphics card itself overheating, not the CPU.

I changed the number from 160 to 50 and it didn't seem to have any noticeable effects : [.
Damn, this looks like a really good game too...
Mar 08, 2011 dtaylorjones link
Ok I fiddled with the settings a bit and I think it was my Graphics Card over heating. I dropped the settings a little and I was able to play for the last 30 minutes with no problems.

Maybe crack the case open and see if there is dust to be removed. Some heatsinks have a tendency to get big globs of dust gobbed up inside them, which reduces airflow.

[ 24.082] (--) NVIDIA(0): Connected display device(s) on GeForce 8600M GT at PCI:1:0:0

If i'm not mistaken, the mobile GeForce 8xxxm series were prone to overheating, some even to the point of partially de-soldering themselves.

I'd definitely do like pizzasgood said and pop it open and make sure the heatsink isn't clogged with dust, or if you're not comfortable taking your laptop apart, take it to a shop that knows what they're doing.

You could also try manually setting the fan speeds up higher when you're playing the game. If the fans adjust based on CPU temp that might be why VO is making the video card heat up and Crysis isn't. VO isn't too terribly taxing on the CPU, but can be pretty hard on the GPU when the details are way up and there's a lot of stuff going on. (Central Hive Skirmish or Large Border Skirmishes make great stress tests.)

Yes, definitely get it cleaned out.

I have the same GPU on a older laptop that actually was de-soldering, which really sucks since of course the damn thing died like 1 week out of warranty.

I can't count how many nvidia 6000~8000 chips and chipsets fry compared to ATI or Intel counterparts.

whole video cards would fry permanently if you din't have them cleaned pretty much all the time.
Nvidia dun goofed with the 6000~8000 chips
Mar 14, 2011 abortretryfail link
It's not permanent. You can re-flow the solder on them and fix them for a little while, but they'll overheat and do it again.

I get a pretty consistent crash on docking with Ubuntu/nVidia.

Works fine here Cortex. Which video card, and drivers?

It's a 7800gs running driver 173. This is 10.04.2 LTS, BTW.

Update:

For shits & giggles I upgraded the box from 10.04.2 LTS to 10.10, 'cause the more I thought about it, I suspected it was a kernel crash, not an X server crash. (Machine goes un-pingable & off the network - only a power cycle will bring it back.)

The situation was drastically improved. Instead of crashing about 60% of the time on docking, it now only crashes about 10% of the time on docking.

There's still some kind of unacceptable crash issue on docking, however.

A bug in VO isn't going to crash your kernel or make the whole computer reboot. That's either a kernel bug, a driver bug, or faulty hardware.

Might want to try using an older driver and see if you get better results. Sometimes up-to-date isn't always a good thing.
Mar 30, 2011 Cortex Reaver link
You're speaking in absolutes you don't have the evidence to back-up.

The fact that it's only on docking. . . docking activation specifically is telling.
