Arch Linux - Intel video question

Nov 29, 2013 vskye link
Before I bother installing Arch, I was curious if anyone has the graphics for say a Intel HD3000 looking just as good in Windows 7? Shaders, etc.

I noticed vast visual coolness when I had Windows 7 installed and the game ran and looked great. But since then I've tossed on Kubuntu 13.04, and the visuals dropped down to crap again. (I just hate Windows)

It would seem that Arch would do a better job with the graphics, since it's a rolling release and I can tweak things more. ?

Any comments appreciated.

That is a low spec card not too good for games, but here is something that may help

It sounds like the driver is not loaded or something

http://www.webupd8.org/2013/05/intel-linux-graphics-installer.html

Here is the benchmarks for that card. Best to use a card with at least a benchmark of 2,500 or better.
But either way you should be able to get it working just as good a windows install.

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/video_lookup.php?gpu=Intel+HD+3000

Anyhow I would double check your linux driver to be sure it's using the intel corporations driver and not some default open driver thats not using any acceleration features of your card etc and so on.

Hope this helps.

Ya, this is on a laptop unfortunately.

But that link looks promising. :)

Thanks Capt, will definately look into it.

Sure thing

The game's going to look crappy without shaders and you can't enable shaders without S3TC support, which probably isn't installed by default. Check this thread for more info about that.

The open source driver *IS* Intel's driver. They have people on the payroll who actively develop it. Intel is kind of awesome in this regard.

The S3TC driver has always been installed and yet it doesn't matter, cause I can never enable the shaders, and yes.. I've tried zapping the config.ini also.

Can you post your ~/.vendetta/openglinfo.log file?

Here it is.

Disabling shaders because of opengl driver bug for Intel 915/945 chipsets.
Disabling shaders because of lack of s3tc/dxtc support.
Not using vertex buffers.
Not using fences.

I do have the libtkc-dxtn-s2tc-bin and libtxc-dxtn-stc0 installed. Got me.
This is a HD3000 btw.

Looks like you're getting caught by VO's Intel bugcheck from ages ago.

Disabling shaders because of opengl driver bug for Intel 915/945 chipsets. <--- This totally doesn't apply to Sandybridge, and I thought the devs removed those checks...
Dec 17, 2013 vskye link
Ya, I thought they did also. I'll submit a ticket and point Ray to this thread.
Dec 18, 2013 raybondo link
Yeah, we fixed it for ivybridge like the changelog shows, not for sandybridge. Unfortunately we can't completely remove the check because a large percentage of default Ubuntu installs still use the broken driver.
Dec 18, 2013 abortretryfail link
Can you add a config file option that says "notrainingwheels=1" that disables all the driver bugchecks so people like Vskye and folks who want to *try* and not run buggy drivers can at least have a chance?
Dec 18, 2013 vskye link
^^ This. :)

Please.
Dec 22, 2013 vskye link
Ray stated that he would also include Sandybridge. :)

Although the game ran *ok* since the shaders started working with Kubuntu, but I had pauses in the game at times.

So, I zapped Kubuntu and installed Arch, and since then everything is running real smooth. :)
Gnome 3 DE btw.
