Recent changes at Meta VR / Oculus

The head of developer relations for the Quest family of devices (our main contact at Meta) and her entire team were laid off this week, along with about a thousand other people from Meta's VR team (including a lot of their internal game developers).

I don't know what this will mean, in terms of the future of the Quest device family.

But, I will say that we have a different perspective from most developers. We're an MMORPG, a service-based game, and we try our best to support our customers where-ever they show up.

This means it doesn't matter to us whether a device is abruptly called "end-of-life" according to some random company. All that matters is whether our players want to keep using it, and whether it's still reasonably technically feasible for us to keep updating for it.

Cases in point:

- We still support VO on the Quest 1, in 2026. Well past the Meta EOL date.
- We continued to support GearVR and Oculus Go long past those devices EOL dates, until it became impractical for us to test for them anymore (hardware failure).
- We supported Daydream long after Google killed it off, until they made so many changes that basically made third-party support more and more infeasible.
- Unlike most developers, we are fully independent of Meta and the Meta Quest App-Store ecosystem.

So, even if the worst should happen to Meta VR, take some solace that your Quest device will probably continue to run Vendetta Online, and be actively updated by us, for some time.
