the text shows my cargo hold full because I had tried to load it when the hold was full, then I emptied it and put the pelt in.

Couldn't you pick it up in an almost dead ship, then log out and your ship will disappear? If so, it would be easy to steal it if Impavid is too trusting. This is a hilarious thread, though.
