Apparently the big secret was self-defense in monitored space!

I would have preferred space ponies.

Changelog:
*** Vendetta 1.8.274.2
- Added ability for players attacked in monitored and guarded sectors to attack back in self-defense without any factional loss if they kill their attacker.
This self defense ability persists for 15 minutes from the last hit by either player or until the original attacker dies for any reason. (Whichever comes first?)

---
What constitutes "hit"? Any amount of damage done with a blaster or a bump, or what?
Jan 13, 2014 abortretryfail link
[100] #raybondo# yes. damage from weapon fire. either explosions, lasers, mines. Ramming does not count.

This is a great win for pirate griefers that bait in nation space! hurrah!
Jan 13, 2014 Dr. Lecter link
So if I get some noob in a free bus to hit me, just once, in station or monitored sector...I can kill him without any faction penalty even if he's outside the NFZ and thus doesn't trigger TempKOS?! Even if he was just botting Kanniks in a monitored sector and I flew into his shot string?!!1111

Holy mother of GOD I am going to have fun with this.

Yeah this update shows a serious lack of insight into common "griefing" tactics. In most cases I've seen where a new player has made a complaint about griefing pirates, this will make it worse rather than better.

New players have no chance of killing another player, but they often fire off shots at you when you shoot near them thinking they are defending themselves. Now you just have to get hit to kill them without penalty.

Yes I made this same point to which the general dev response was confusion

However, if they shoot you and you kill them without penalty they are not penalized just briefly killed and wiser for it (or maybe they dont learn and you get like 20 kills)

So, still seems a bit better than before...maybe

None of this is a surprise, or confusing, heh. This is one update out of a fairly complex process of re-working friend and foe indication and determination. And I really don't have the option of holding all the individual pieces until they're complete. Even this took longer than anticipated.

Soon you're going to see new indicator graphics for selected targets (graphical warnings, etc), and changing tutorials, and other things. But in the meantime, this does allow more experienced players to respond to attacks in factional space, etc.

(Also, I can't believe Ray released this as ".2". Wtf?)
Jan 14, 2014 TheRedSpy link
Oh, well, okay.

'cos like, for a minute there it just looked like you'd spent 2 weeks working on this and now you're expecting that problem to stop. Which would have been kinda sad.
Jan 14, 2014 incarnate link
What problem? Newbie griefing? That's not even what this was about..
Jan 14, 2014 TheRedSpy link
Hey man don't look at me, I don't even think there is a problem with this stuff, or at least not a big one.
Jan 14, 2014 abortretryfail link
Yeah TRS, you always did enjoy exploiting every broken bit of the standing system you could find...

This is definitely an improvement. This means pirates can't shoot your 'moth (or Trident) to within an inch of it's hull then wait for you to jump to unmonitored space for the kill. You can finally actually fight back and mean it.
