524 total names so far.

Ok. All these planets were named by a human, right? Most likely they were named by some explorer who comes out of warp or whatever, and hops around a system dropping sector buoys and looking at the different planets.

So they were named by people. Not a random letter generator. Please, try to imagine that you are an explorer entering a system for the first time. What would you call the planets that you found there? "Flibertyjibber"? "Edyhedlamrof"? What the hell do those mean, anyway?

Instead, think of a word. Consult dictionaries for languages other than English if you have to, but find something that has some meaning, however miniscule. Above all, think to yourself, "What would I name a planet?"

Or, if you truly would name a pristine planet using a random letter generator... well I guess you totally lack imagination then :P

However, European city and location names often don't have a clear meaning (anymore). So the larger sector should mostly have non-English names. Because they are generaly very old and their names have gradually become something different.
And who says the explorer couldn't have an extensive knowledge of say Greek mythology?

Black Omega, "geil" means.. well err.. look it up in a Dutch dictionary.

I like Barbecue. We need a planet called Barbecue, as it would be good for morale.

"Serconian" would only be correct were the nation's name "Sercon" or "Serconia". For example:

Estonia = Estonian != Eston
Latvia = Latvian !=Lat or Latvi
Lithuania = Lithuanian != Lith
Canada = Canadian != Cana or Canad
Russia = Russian !=Russ
Mongolia = Mongolians != Mongol (The term "mongol" is archaic and no longer used to refer to natives of Mongolia except in historical context)

Thus Serco (or, I suppose "Sercos") is technically correct, referring to the nation and the people, much in the way that Saudi and Saudis are used to refer to denizens of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and descendants of the house of Saud.
Black Omega: O.o ( the supprised planet )
Shouldn't the suprised planet be O.O?
O.o would be the winking (or cock-eyed) planet.
^.^ would be the happy/smiling planet
<(0.0<) <(O.O)> (>0.0)> would be the Kirby planet

"Wee'rami"... Like that one.

Jun 17, 2004 Starfisher link
I always thought 0.o was the cock-eyed planet.
Jun 17, 2004 Bulishor link
how about names termintated in Major or Minor, like Ezak Major(for an important star/planet), and Ezak Minor (for smaller ones, graviting the big one)
Jun 17, 2004 Black Omega link
0.o should perhaps be the quizical planet, one eyebrow raised ala Spock

Quote "We don't want actual star names (for various reasons), and they cannot be from any sort of copyrighted material (popular fiction, movies, other videogames, whatever)" - Incarnate

So far i've spotted

Babylon (B5)
New Vegas (STtNG)
Haven (STtNG)
Thoth (Star Wars ?)
Adams Station (Elite II - Frontier)
Zahadum (B5)
New Boston (Elite II - Frontier)

Anyone spot anymore?
Weird how stuff stays in your subconcious

Yeah, actually. Lots are ripped from soemthing, probably not intentionally.
Jun 17, 2004 paedric link
New Boston wasn't intentional. I've never heard of Elite II - Frontier. I'm from New England so the leap from Boston to New Boston wasn't that large.

It's also the name of a town in New Hampshire, Texas, and Ohio so it can hardly be considered copyrighted material.

Babylon, ancient city located in modern day Iraq. Also not copyrighted material.
