Name the Universe Contest!

>I like RelayeR's idea of backwards names, although some are still kinda odd looking...<

It wasn't my idea...I just caught Paedric doing it (wink).

It might be a good idea to let discoverers name a sector they have discovered. Sending the devs a list of 3 names to be applied to the sector and they decide on one. (receipt time of the email is the determining factor as to who discovered it.)

Let's keep to the topic of stars and other celestial items.

867 names. I'll post the list later.

I didn't put in the periodic table, sorry. Too much typing for something that is listed just about everywhere. ;P

Sectors could be named after star named as well:

http://www.ras.ucalgary.ca/~gibson/starnames/starnames.lst

I don't know if theres any copyrighted material there.
Jun 22, 2004 Arolte link
The first post says they don't want to use real star names and copyrighted material. I believe the url you posted, Tilt152, qualifies as both. Think of original names, it's not hard. Well, maybe a little.
Jun 22, 2004 HyperSpaz link
I think you can do it in a very organized fashion. Every "galaxy" or "system" will have a base name. And beyond that you can add in cool words! Like "Geome System", subsector "Neloop" or something cool.

no, actually you forgot arolte's
Jun 22, 2004 Forum Moderator link
I do not consider Arolte's post to be a flame. I think you are reading something into it that is not there, AlienB. I don't think Arolte was trying to imply that it is difficult for Tilt in particular to come up with names. We could probably live without a few of these posts, but oh well. Please move on.

What about designating certain planets numbers?

Like this

System= Yorn
Planet= 261

Thus, the planet name could be Yorn-261.

This naming system works espically well in unihabited systems since most are classified by Star Type, number of planets or universe coordinates...

You could name one of the systems or sectors or whatever "Tortuga", the old pirate hangout of the Caribbean. As you would expect it's where the scum of the universe go to hangout. To not get attacked by the Defenders you'll have to have a large number of kills. You can also do this with a BountyHunter area and a Mercenary area.

EDIT:

This might've been said already...but a really dangerous sector could be called "Styx"
Jun 22, 2004 HyperSpaz link
We should name one "Gentu" (or is it Gentoo?) in honor of everyone's favorite ship, the Friggy ^^

A very "happy" or whatever place could be named Valhalla (Norse Mythology, where the godz dwelled)

And for some cool missions you could do "We need you to bring this artifact to s____" And artifacts would be mythologically based...

Artemis's Bow
Thor's Hammer
Zeus's Crown
Ares's Spear
Cerberus's Collar (^.-)

Or you could pull a Stargate and name areas as if they were assigned to gods.

"You are entering Ra's System, luck be with you!"

And stuff to this extent. But mythology has always played a big part in space, so basing space on some mythology would be nice.

Lastly it'd be easier to name thing if you tell us where this should be going...

-Random Names
-Hiostorical Names
-Mythological Names
-Scientific Names
-etc

Thanks! Cheers!

"We're looking for cool, somewhat random name ideas."
-Incarnate

Anything you like, basically.
Jun 22, 2004 HyperSpaz link
I think it'd be cool (this is probably just me, but I've always been a huge fan of mythology) to name everything in a very Mythological sense. 3 systems.
Olympus, Valhalla, and...ummmm...what's the name of the place Eqyptian godz live? Oh well...anyways, each of these major systems is divided into sub-systems, in here are the names of minor gods.

Olympus
-Zeus
-Poseidon
-Hades
Valhalla
-Thor
-Loki
-Odin
[Egyptian godz Place]
-Ra
-Isis
-Set

and of course each sub-system is divided into a cluster of sectors. so you people might hate the idea but it was worth a shot.

Some of the words used in the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) alphabet are cool sounding. And with Space Ship One being a success, I could see some of them actually being used as civilians venture out into space.

A=Alpha
B=Bravo
C=Charlie
D=Delta
E=Echo
F=Foxtrot
G=Golf
H=Hotel
I=India
J=Juliet
K=Kilo
L=Lima
M=Mike
N=November
O=Oscar
P=Papa
Q=Quebec
R=Romeo
S=Sierra
T=Tango
U=Uniform
V=Victor
W=Whiskey
X=X-ray
Y=Yankee
Z=Zulu

And to honor a major first step:

Rutan

Let me humbly offer my support for the name "Rutan" as a major system.

One thing the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy taught me is that in an infinite universe anything is possible. :P

Somewhere out there is probably a planet called Spuck orbiting a giant a toaster. :P
