Ambushes

Why is it so easy to be ambushed and killed without any warning what-so-ever? Maybe we should have some sort of proximity alert to danger or some sort of shielding would be nice. I hate being dead before I even know I'm in trouble.

Many players have argued that it is much too difficult to ambush opponents.

Seasoned pilots make it a habit to check the sector list (u) key whenever they enter a sector, undock, see a wormhole open, see a new dot on their radar, think they see a distant glimmer in the distance, and every 3rd heartbeat. It's the basic skill of Situational Awareness. It's an easy habit to make that will save you all sorts of trouble. It's like a nervous tic for me now.

This isn't to try and invalidate your suggestion, just to keep you alive until whenever / if-ever your idea comes to fruition.

Ramrover, use this command:
/verbose 1

You'll get a little message alerting you when the server loads resources for ANY other ship entering the sector, AND when they leave the sector. Soon you'll begin to recognize user ID numbers.

Turn it back to "normal" by using:
/verbose 0

yea, i have to say if you are paying attention, it's prety much inposable to be ambushed, unless you allow yourself to get into dangerous situations. (the only exception being womeholes)

I agree with Lord Q. As long as you now what you're about (and who is ingame) the most dangerous times are wormhole warps. It just takes getting used to watching your back.

Because it's too much like lifting V.O.'s skirt and looking at all the juicy code hidden underneath.

verbose has much more interesting gamewise uses than just the lovely "look, ID <foo> entered the sector". again though, I'm at the "give us an API to talk to and let the devs write a game engine" stage. the current UI will be replaced, which is nice, but it would be great if what we got was pluggable to an extent where the devs could spend their time on doing core stuff and players could add things like a proximity detector or what-have-you-not. it's not like it's much different from making a "target closest enemy"-bind and have that on at all times.

VO needs more options for players, both game and interface wise, not less. :-)
