Remove Player List

Devs,

Can you please remove the "Players in Sector" list (the one you get when you press "u")? It completely removes any element of surprise. I mean, if I come into a sector where there's pirates on the list, I know to be careful. They lost the element of surprise. It's just a vestigal function from the days of the deathmatch sector, so I think it's about time to do away with it. Or, at the very least, only show people who are within radar range. Please.

I disagree with removing it entirely, however I would support limiting it to players in radar range, or limiting it to players with a legal IFF transmitter. The only players without an IFF would be pirates, and they'd have to pay a pretty credit (and avoid patrols) to keep them.

I think the player list actually adds an element of suspense. You *know* there's a pirate out there, but you're just not sure where.....

I have to disagree with this somewhat. The list is very helpful when on "combat
training" missions ("...now find and destroy a Guardian Bot..."). Without this
feature, completing these already tedious "missions' would become excruciating !

You can tell where the bots are.. the map tells you. For unaligned sectors... well the whole point is to explore. Explore damnit!

I agree. Take it out. It's still way too easy to avoid combat right now. Ever since the new universe update, the only kills I got was some guy who was floating next to a station while he was messing around with his graphics settings and a misunderstanding between me and Verdandi. That's it. Since then I've probably encountered a little over a dozen traders, all of which flew right out of the sector the moment they saw me in the sector stats window. Not exactly fun. It's just way too easy to detect your enemies and escape.

Hate to say it (actually no I don't) but I have to disagree with Arolte and Roguelazer. The player list should stay in.

Wow. Me and Arolte agree. Now it's time to take over the world!

No, seriously, the Player List adds nothing to gameplay and takes away what little surprise there is left without radar occlusion.

I agree take it out. It's always hurt PvP (though it's nice for chasing).

keep it in.

I say leave it in, but like ctishman said, maybe limit it to radar range or something like that.

NAY!!! Leave it in.

(/me agreeing with furball, what's this world coming to?)

Leave it in but re-institute an in-system warp countdown timer. That should force the PvP issue.
Aug 20, 2004 paedric link
NAY!!! To the forcing of PvP also.

I second paedric...

I dont want to have to fight...

there will be opportunities and chances enough to loose your hard earned money unwillingly.

I say in for monitored sectors and out for open sectors.
Aug 20, 2004 roguelazer link
That's a fair compromise Hoax.
Aug 20, 2004 Spellcast link
Oddly enough, I'm with arolte and rogue on this one. (gasp i'm agreeing with arolte, what is this game coming too?)

I'm also for re-adding the warp countdown timer, (not at 15 seconds tho, thats just way too long, i'd say 5-10)

Renegade, If you want to avoid combat you will just have to remain in areas that are patrolled by your nation.

perhaps instead of being "in" for monitored sectors and "out" for unmonitored ones, maybe only NPC's could be shown. IT really is tedius enough finding bots for those missions when you can see how many of them are in the sector. If you have to kill 6 A3's and theres only 1 in the sector with 9 A2's, I prefer to go looking for a different area.

"Should the Sector Player List "u" be removed from the game?"

For it: 4 people
roguelazer
Arolte
Eldrad
Spellcast

Against: 4 people
Phaserlight
RattMann ~ Not entirely sure if he is
furball
Renegade ++RIP++

Comprimise: 2 People
ctishman ~ Radar Range Only
Hoax ~ Monitored Sectors Only

Well, Im against it. So that makes the people against this ahead by 1 person :P. I support Phaser's idea:

I was suggesting to remove the player list long time ago, and place a "Players Online: 100" somewhere on this site.

The problem with removing the player list is that if a newbie or a cargo hauler gets pked by a hardcore player killer without the ability to see whos online, then the player does not want to play the game anymore because he knows that he will get pked again and again and as soon as you know it, he will probably get singled out.

I understand that removing the players online list and anything that detects if a player is online adds elements of surprise but I think it may not be feasable because of two reasons:
1. One high level player may have to spend countless of hours to escort a low level ship to just have it's character built and that wouldent get their times worth with all the action going on.
2. What I explained above, a low level pilot will get singled out by a PKer and will not want to play this game anymore.

I can handle the list of online players being removed from the game.

An alternative idea is, in the Navigation menu, there would be another feature called scan for player... or /scan for short. The results would return, "Pilot is in this system.", "Pilot is in a different system", or "Pilot not found."
