BROWSER

I'm having problems! Have installed today via download link on this site. When i launch Vendetta it goes to the update utility as no doubt it's meant to. When it gets to this stage it just hangs though. I clicked 'help' and it produced this msg:

$BROWSER is not set correclty -- Couldnt open a browser.

I thought long and hard about that (im a n00b LInux user :-P) and came to the conclusion that maybe firefox is at fault? I have tried downloading Mozilla but that has not helped (having found out it's and update of netscape). I cannot see any obvious config file to amend the browser Vendetta wishes to open.

Help!

$BROWSER is an environment variable that's supposed to point to whichever web-browser you choose to use, wherever it might be located

It was created by the devs, because different linux distributions all have different browser choices, and put them in different places. I believe (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) that "help" button you see merely brings up your off-line HTML manual, which can be found in ~/.vendetta/manual/introduction.html

Now the freezing I'm not sure about, but have you tried waiting a while, or quitting and retrying several times?

Its similar to $VISUAL and $EDITOR, See:

Right, it's just trying to open up a browser when you hit the help button. However, fixing the $BROWSER issue doesn't really solve your first problem, which is apparently that the updater is hanging.

Which most likely means there's a firewall somewhere between you and us that allows HTTP but not TCP port 21024.

I'm not familiar at all with the default firewall setup on SuSE 9.1, but maybe someone else here is?

Cracking stuff. My software (Linux) distro firewall is disabled, though me and my housemate have a kind of home-network so maybe he has some sort of hardware firewall on the router itself. I guess the main thing is distinguishing where exactly things are going wrong, which i believe you chaps have helped identify.

Cheers!

Here's more info if you do need to open up your firewall:
http://www.vendetta-online.com/firewalls.html

Usually this isn't necessary, because you are making outgoing connections to us - most firewalls will figure out that this is traffic you originated, and is therefore traffic you want.
