EnB and TGFT will again be hosting The Deneb Run this weekend.

*** The TIME will be 02:00 GMT Sunday (9 PM EDT) ***

The plan is to alternate between 22:00 GMT on Saturday and 02:00 GMT on Sunday.

Check /time if you are confused about GMT.

*** New VO Client not-allowed due to battery exploit ***

All citizens are welcome to race, there is no entrance fee, and 4 Million credits in prizes are available. Some of it could be yours!

Once again, the rules are:

1) Racers must race from Odia M14 through Deneb heading clockwise back to Odia M14.
2) Race starts in Odia M14 near the station.
3) Contestants must be within 100m of me before the start
4) No shooting before I start the race.
5) You die and you're out (so no /exploding)
6) All weapons and ships allowed, except those listed in #10.
7) First person to get back and dock at Odia M14 wins the first prize. (2 million credits)
8) Second person back gets 2nd place prize (1.2 million credits)
9) Third person back gets 3rd place prize (800k credits)
10) No Valkyries allowed.
11) Racers must use the standard VO client. The beta clients are not allowed.
12) Money for killing other racers: Any pilot, racing or not, is eligible to earn money as follows:

Pre-condition #1: There must be at least 3 racers
Pre-condition #2: Less than 3 racers complete The Deneb Run
If the above pre-conditions are met, the undistributed prize money will be awarded to those who killed the racers as follows:
- Kills in the Odia M-14 sector are not eligible
- The most recent eligible kill earns the highest unawarded prize money (2 mil, 1.2 mil, 800k, or 0)
- The 2nd most recent eligible kill earns the 2nd highest unawarded prize money (1.2 mil, 800k, or 0)
- The 3rd most recent eligible kill earns the 3rd highest unawarded prize money (800k or 0)

I believe this is a good way of saying thanks to those who help spice things up for the racers, without encouraging station camping (which is too easy).

Please reply to this thread if you intend to race.

The Race-Make-Fun Squad needs your support!

To make the race more fun and exciting you have to do just one thing: Kill them racers! Crush their cockpits, turn their ships into scrap, spill their blood onto the spacelanes!

Use ANY means nessessary!

To offset expenses I'll give you 500K for every racer that you prevented entering the m14 station in one piece. Even the pathetic excuses of human waste products who take part in the race can collect the money. Show that you're more than an ape in a speedboat!

Station Camping encouraged!

You may get another 200K per kill if we repeat last weeks success!

I will be there for sure.

With the pirate success that's been going on, I think that we need to think ahead and address a potential problem.

What prevents a racer from just 'waiting out' the pirates?

Just put on a 50 min time limit on completing the race just in case we ever need it.
Mar 17, 2006 jexkerome link
Considering this Run's timeslot, I don't think pirates will be a problem this time around. Plus, 50 is too short a timeframe, many people have come close to it, and they don't deserve to be disqualified just because their ISP and/or location are not that great.

Announcement: In a new first for The Deneb Run, I will be broadcasting a race soundtrack and some announcements via TeamSpeak this week. I encourage everyone to listen in.

If you don't already have a copy of the TeamSpeak client, you can get it for free at from www.goteamspeak.com. It supports PC, Linux, and Mac. You don't need a microphone if you just want to listen.

I'll provide more information on the server before the race and let people tune in early to make sure their setup is working.
Mar 18, 2006 Screwball link
Ok, the TeamSpeak server is now up and running at:

screwball.is-a-geek.com

It's not a 24/7 server, but I'll try to have it up between now and the end of tonight's race. If you tune in and hear music, then you know your setup is working.

Just login anonymously and put your username in the Nickname field.
Mar 18, 2006 jexkerome link
Well, I'm not running, but if I were, the last thing I'd want is another app sucking off my processor power and bandwidth. I hope you never decide to make it mandatory.
Mar 18, 2006 Screwball link
No, the TeamSpeak thing is just for fun. I won't make it mandatory.

I figure it will add some extra "flavor", making it more like a RL sporting event. When I use the client on a remote server, it only adds about 1 ms to my ping.

The Race
--------
[Special thanks to Erik C./Blue Streak for the writeup]

Almost as if conspiring against the limited patience of the pirates, the race took off a full twenty four minutes past the hour. First to the the Odia wormhole was Blue Streak, followed quickly by Spaceranger, Mike-L, and Dihelical Synthesis. Ion Storm, Maximian, and Esson Lennenk followed quickly behind. No racers had reported yet from the second group. Baron Koob, who got a late start, was zooming ahead. Euphoriac, fooz2916 and DingDong were just coming to the wormhole as the leaders pushed into Sedina. Baron Koob entered B-8 a full twenty seconds ahead of Blue Streak and Spaceranger.

As the rest of the second race group finished pulling into Sedina, Braon Koob starts to slowly admit that he has been cheating all along. Finally, by Sol II, he gets bored of the charade and states it outright, leaving and being disqualified. But going back in time... Mick had zoomed ahead of Blue Streak for the lead, Ion Storm not four seconds behind him. Spaceranger had fallen to fourth, just barely ahead of Maximian. DingDong and Zach Drawl were way back in Sedina B-8 as the leading racers pulled into Ukari and started to split off through the few possible routes to Sol II. The racers heading for the Initros system had two storms in their way, which some racers plotted around and some didn't. spuck's dead hamster was harassing racers back in Latos, along with Pegasus. Euphoriac would fall to spuck's swarm scythe, being the second racer eliminated thus far. The split lines reformed back into a single race line heading into Dantia B-5.

First there was Blue Streak, followed nine seconds later by Ion Storm. Next in were fooz2916 and Zach Drawl, followed neck in neck by Spaceranger and Maximian. BUNNY and Dihelical Synthesis close behind as Blue Streak raced for the wormhole to Betheshee... only to come to close to spuck's dead hamster's swarms. Racer #3 out. Ion Storm suddenly found himself in the lead, with Maximian in second and BUNNY in third. Zach Drawl was taken down spuck's dead hamster as well, making the kill count three and total racers out four.

Ion Storm was plowing through Deneb, already halfway through the race. Harpo, BUNNY and Maximian were entering Geira Rutilus, in that order. DingDong was just coming into Sol II as Esson Lennenk left the system. Up ahead of them, between the rear and forward groups, Dihelical Synthesis and Spaceranger were coming into Geira Rutilus. The pirate presence was still active, as maximian was taken down crossing into Deneb. Ion Storm was racing ahead, already in Cantus as Spaceranger entered Eo. fooz2916, along with Dihelical Synthesis and Mick were near the wormhole to Eo. BUNNY was streaking ahead, gaining on the leader as yet another racer was taken down, Esson Lennenk. Mike-L was pulling into Geire Rutilus in his behemoth while DingDong entered Betheshee, bringing up the rear of the race.

BUNNY zoomed ahead, taking the lead from Ion Storm as they headed into Setalli Shinas. Dihelical Synthesis was close behind in Metana, dogged a jump behind by Spaceranger. Mike-L was trucking along with his moth as DingDong continued to be plagued by bad load times, lagging behind.

On and on the race went through Itani space, the local strike forces hounding the hated racers, urging them out of their space. Mike-L wasn't quick enough, his massive trading ship blown to pieces. That was racer #7 out. Meanwhile, all the way in Artana Aquilis, BUNNY was racing through, already two thirds done with the race. Ion Storm had second, about two jumps back in Pherona, with harpo not too far behind for third. Dihelical was right behind Spaceranger as fooz2916 made the long run in Itan P-6 for that wormhole. DingDong trooped on through Eo, despite his horrid ping.

BUNNY had a solid lead, almost three jumps ahead of Ion Storm, as she headed for Pelatus. her visions of victory were cut short by mr_spuck's swarms, though. Easy pickings as spuck "earned" his fifth kill of the night. The Run continued with no more deaths, and little position change, as Ion Storm docked for first, Mick for second and harpo for third. Congrats to the winners (and the survivors).

Interesting observations:

1. This was the largest race yet with 15 racers. I think my hands and eyes reached their bandwith limit trying to keep up with typing in player positions, and that's with Miharu helping announce a whole other group of racers. I may need to limit the size of future races, or find a more efficient way to announce the status.

2. This is also the first time someone has cheated (or at least admitted to it) by using the beta client. Baaad, bad, Baron Koob.

3. Those that tuned into the TeamSpeak broadcast seemed to enjoy the race soundtrack. It is NOT required for racers, but should add to the enjoyment of the event if you want to listen in. I may try alternate audio technologies for this purpose, because the audio quality is not great, and my beta-only TeamSpeex client tends to crash when other people talk.

Baron Koob cheated? I knew something was up with him taking 1st early in the race.....>.<
