Deneb Run #40

Apr 01, 2006 Screwball link
EnB and TGFT will again be hosting The Deneb Run this weekend.

Since I skipped the early timeslot last week due to travel issues, this will be in the earlier slot.

*** Valkyries are allowed again! ***

*** The TIME will be 22:00 GMT Saturday (5 PM EDT) ***

The plan is to alternate between 22:00 GMT on Saturday and 02:00 GMT on Sunday.

Check /time if you are confused about GMT.

All citizens are welcome to race, there is no entrance fee, and 4 Million credits in prizes are available. Some of it could be yours!

Once again, the rules are:

1) Racers must race from Odia M14 through Deneb heading clockwise back to Odia M14.
2) Race starts in Odia M14 near the station.
3) Contestants must be within 100m of me before the start
4) No shooting before I start the race.
5) You die and you're out (so no /exploding)
6) All weapons and ships allowed, except those listed in #10.
7) First person to get back and dock at Odia M14 wins the first prize. (2 million credits)
8) Second person back gets 2nd place prize (1.2 million credits)
9) Third person back gets 3rd place prize (800k credits)
10) Money for killing other racers: Any pilot, racing or not, is eligible to earn money as follows:

Pre-condition #1: There must be at least 3 racers
Pre-condition #2: Less than 3 racers complete The Deneb Run
If the above pre-conditions are met, the undistributed prize money will be awarded to those who killed the racers as follows:
- Kills in the Odia M-14 sector are not eligible
- The most recent eligible kill earns the highest unawarded prize money (2 mil, 1.2 mil, 800k, or 0)
- The 2nd most recent eligible kill earns the 2nd highest unawarded prize money (1.2 mil, 800k, or 0)
- The 3rd most recent eligible kill earns the 3rd highest unawarded prize money (800k or 0)

I believe this is a good way of saying thanks to those who help spice things up for the racers, without encouraging station camping (which is too easy).

Please reply to this thread if you intend to race.

The Race
--------
[Special thanks to Joyce Sanders for the writeup here]

The pilots took off at the signal and immediately began to race for the first wormhole, Mick, BUNNY, Xeelee and silentsuicide at the forefront. Like last time, BUNNY began took the lead and began to widen it as the pilots passed the first hurdle, the pirate-infested Sedina-Latos wormhole; as the pilots raced through Ukari, though, Esson Lennenk had taken hold of second place, the rest of the pack falling behind. It was in Ukari that the first racer was to be brought down, firsm bringing Mike-L down as he attempted to cross into Initros. More deaths were to follow, as Surbius Bondevo and then Xeelee were also cut down at the Initros wormhole, both dead by firsm too, who was on a roll.

The racing pack began to break up as it traversed the Dominion, BUNNY at the lead followed by Esson Lennenk and silentsuicide behind him; the rest did their best to try and keep up, the pirates left far behind. That didn't mean, however, that the pilots were now safe, as storms hindered the passage of the racers and put their ships at risk; most crucially, the Dominion defense forces scrambled to attack those deemed persona non grata by their government. Ghostieboy was to be plagued by pursuing fighters throughout his flight across the Red Territories, but it was silentsuicide who ran across the SMV Nemesis: moving close to the Betheshee wormhole, the HAC locked on and fired upon silentscuicide's ship at close range while it warped, blasting it to smithereens. Like in Runs past, the Defense Forces took their toll on the racers.

The lead racers entered then the Itani Nation, BUNNY first then Esson Lennenk and Mick, taking third now that silentsuicide was gone. Ghostieboy somehow managed to avoid the Serco capship's fire and escaped the Dominion, coming in at fifth place; John Rambler was having too many problems with asteroids and had fallen far behind, but was still in the running. Now it was the turn of the Serco pilots to be harried by Defense Forces and, more importantly, try to run through the imminent second wave of pirate attacks, that would not cease until the Run was over. The racer positions remained, but Mick was slowly catching up to Esson, clawing for second place; BUNNY, at least a full system ahead than both of them, seemed unreachable now.

However, BUNNY's luck was at an end: Niki caught up to her in Pelatus and went after her; she tried her best to shake the SKV ace to no avail, and Niki took her down. With this, Esson was in first, Mick in second, and Ghostieboy in third... if they could dock at Corvus Hold.

Strangely enough, the pirates seemed to dissolve into mist at BUNNY's demise, and the four remaining racers went forward unimpeded. Esson had the lead secured when Mick hit a storm; to make matters worse for him, Ghostieboy passed him by, and now second place was up in the air. Who'd get it?

Esson docked for first place with little problem, while over Bractus Mick caught up with Ghostieboy; both warped... and Mick somehow ended up in Odia B-13 instead of M-14. No one knows how that happened, but he had effectively forfeited second place. Ghostieboy docked to claim second and a chagrined Mick had to accept third place. With the top three places taken, the race wound down and John Rambler docked for fourth, and the 40th Deneb Run was at an end.

The Stats
---------
Esson Lennenk | 36:28 | Orion Hornet, FC, no weaps
Ghostieboy | 36:59 | Warthog MkII, FC, no weaps
Mick | 38:04 | Vulture MkI, FC, no weaps
John Rambler | 48:45 | Orion Hornet, FC, no weaps
BUNNY | DNF | Vulture MkI, fc, no weaps
silentsuicide | DNF | TPG Raptor, FC, no weaps
Xeelee | DNF | TPG Raptor, FC, Neut MkI
Surbius Bondevo | DNF | Corvus Vulturis, FC, no weaps
Mike-L | DNF | Vulture MkI, FC, no weaps
Illusion | (had to leave after firsm attack) | Vulture MkI, FC, 2x Posi

Interesting observations:

1. firsm's rocket tube seems to suffer from premature launch. (He attacked the racers PRIOR to the start of the race.)

2. Thanks to SCAR for preventing firsm from further disrupting the start of the race.

3. For anyone wondering about the order in which I list the pilots at the top, I try to guess their "seed", so proven winners and experienced pilots go near the top. Guild membership and rank is a tiebreaker among the less experienced pilots. For the DNF pilots, I put the first kill at the bottom, etc.
