A power in the Universe

There is a power in the Universe. One until recently not even believed to actually exist. This power is the nation of Corvus, which from all accounts consists of the seedier side of life. Pirates, murderers, black market traders, thieves and assasins are all that are said to reside there.

The early origins of this nation are sketchy at best, but it has been rumored that the true origins of Corvus started when those who had been exiled from thier respective nations, living however the could on the fringes of society, finally grew numerous enough to require some kind of laws amongst themselves.

These people generally were doing things well worth being exiled into the outer reaches of space. The most common were the murderers, people just too dangerous to have among crowds of people. For the Itani, who by this time did not believe in the killing of another no matter what thier crimes. these people were dealt with by putting the offender in a small freighter with a locked navigation system and sending him to the farthest destination thier maps allowed. The neutral territories have always had varied ways of dealing with murderers, mostly depending on the local customs, and quite a few less than legitimate traders who prefer to stay out of the limelight. Serco, in thier desire to make things better than they already are, have on more than one occasion developed a killing machine so effective it could not be stopped, but only contained and removed. The Serco, in order to make sure these things would not return soon, developed advanced navigation systems able to scan for new wormholes and navigate the reachs of space automatically resulting in these types of partly human, mostly cybernetic, terrors in the farther reaches of the unclaimed systems.

With these people making up the bulk of it, the first meeting of what would later become the nation of Corvus was had. This first meeting was nothing short of a tense occasion. There was no fanfare, no formal setting, nothing splendid about it. There were no stations in these areas of space at this time, so you had roughly 50 murderers and pirates within three hundred meters of each other all debating over how the place they lived was going to be run. Needless to say, people died, and extremely large sums of money changed hands, but in the end they had a set of rules which, if followed fairly well, would allow them to live however they wished and still work together.

For quite some time after that initial meeting things went unchanged other than minor gatherings to handle the occasional large problem. Then something occured, something potentially disasterous, at the time it was unknown what it was, but suddenly large military fleets were seen gathering on the edges of claimed space and quite a few people were disappearing. This is now known to have been the time shorty after the Serco and Itani met again for the first time, when all the nations realized a space invasion was a very real threat. This sudden and powerful threat from all sides is the catalyst that bound these people together, and spun the first official incarnation of the insanely secretive, powerful, hidden nation.

This new threat being very real, and very powerful, the newly formed nations first order of business was to construct defendable outposts and bases in order to ensure they would not end up fragmented, and to build industry of thier own in order to make fleets. They searched into the deepest reaches of space in order to find a suitable place. They settled on the planet Kraz, which while having an extremely hostile enviroment, has a fairly breathable atmosphere after easy filtration techniques. It was also very rich in quite a few heavy elements which were crucial in the building of ships and weapons. Constructing huge domes out of asteroids gathered from the system, they dropped them onto the planets surface from orbit, releasing massive amounts of energy, blocking the sun in the dust created from the impact, and creating massive craters around the domes to partially protect them from the enviroment. After this had been done and they had been properly checked to ensure the filters were working correctly, large ice crystals were dropped to the planets surface, providing water. These tasks being accomplished the first of the manufacturing and mining gear was installed, and work on the first station was commenced. Knowing the power of the enemy, and also knowing attacks from within were likely, the first station Corvus ever built was immense, over half of its mass being heavy armor. As things moved into place the rest of the system was settled, allowing for almost total coverage and firepower throughtout the system.

For years the fleets were seen getting larger and more powerful, but still no foray into the unclaimed systems was made, and Corvus grew uneasy and restless. They decided to expand bases into neighboring systems, and almost immediatly after having finished the two bases, large fleets of Unknown ships under heavy anti detection measures were seen entering and leaving those systems for an unknown purpose. After many stealthy chases and encounters with the newcomers firepower, it was discovered these fleets were commercial entities, building stations in order to exploit the untaxed and uncontrolled resources in the unclaimed systems. Seeing this potentially unlimited source of credits and supplies, raids were arranged, territory was claimed, prices were set, and the first official sanctioned pirating and privateering commenced in grey space.

The one worry of Corvus was that thier strongholds would be discovered, and therefore give a target to the enemies, and to ensure that would not happen, all of the Corvus stations and planets were outfitted with extremely sensitive detection equipment and heavy weaponry. There is no recorded occurence of an attacking fleet ever escaping a wartime alerted Corvus station.

Things have stabilized since then, with thier spy networks having supplied them with virtually every bit of information in the universe, and thier pirating efforts bringing in equipment and inventions, assuring they will never be outdone due to technology. They have done some interesting engineering in the area of very fast fighters, and, while distrustful, have recently shared their location with certain groups of traders, allowing them access to things thier respective nations would never allow them to have, and requiring things so common other places that the prices for them are quite high, allowing a nice profit margin. Current day Corvus is young, but a force to respect and have laws that must be maintained within thier borders, else you may end as just another payday.

This is a power of the Universe, one to be wary of.
