Apology to Michael and Whistler

Jun 11, 2005 JestatisBess link
I want to formally apologize to the developers and the guides.

After the recent update I was a little belligerent towards Michael and Whistler.

There is no excuse for my belligerent tone with them immediately after the update. I apologize whole heartily.

I was (and still am) a little upset about the update. Of course it wasn’t exactly what I wanted and I reacted badly to it.

I realize I’m not a developer or a guide. But my immediate reaction was of revulsion to the new update. But only because by making the turrets and the cap ship so strong I didn’t think it gave the players much of a battle. Like I said before after numerous Itani cap ships were killed in ion storms, “only the bots are having any fun”. I still feel that way.

And I think the Cap ships are to strong now. We went from one extreme to the other. Insead of a 4x change could you have done maybe a 2x change. I know the cap ships will seek each other out and try to kill each other but I wanted to plan a battle for players not for cap ships.

Also even though I posted the planned changes earlier this week, I didn’t think less then 13 hours was enough notice to give players. I’m sure some of you have planned strategy for this battle already. Thirteen hours doesn’t give you a real chance to prepare.

I was preparing to cancel the planned battle and just have a free for all or whatever. But let’s see how it goes. I’ve put about 9 weeks into the planned cap ships battles (I know that’s nothing compared to the developers and older players but it is a lot of time for a paying costumer) and I hope the cap sip battles succeed and eventually become a permanent part of the game. I want to continue you to try to make it fair for all sides. The people tonight have a distinct advantage over the players who weren’t here.

Again I’m sorry for my belligerent tone. I again apologize to anyone who might have been offended. I do know the planned cap ship battles were part of the reason for the update. I gain want to thank you for all your efforts on our behalf.

Sincerely,
Jestatis Bess

JestatisBess thats a good thing, the Cap ships should be juggernauts. Taken on only by the boldest players, skill level aside vo'ers don't really want everything to be easy. I would think that most of us agree. The harder the challenge the greater the sense of accomplishment.

Three Cheers!!!

"This is a minor patch to facilitate capital ship battles and
group border patrol missions; it also contains some
additional content to be used in the future.
"

There is more to this update than you think. Hopefully we'll be able to expect another one in a few days or less.

Sorry macguy, the "content to be used in the future" really needs a lot of backend programming before you'll see anyone but a dev flying it around. Incarnate has promised us a balancing update in the meantime, but we're still mostly focused on building better tools for rapid content development.

Oh, and apology accepted JB:) Hopefully the battle in 2 hours will be more fun than you think:)

i wonder if the problem will only be solved when more players come to play. When there are less players, the caps need to be stronger. as more players come, the weps can be tonned down, and the armor wont be nearly as hard to eat through

The way I see it, the new cap ships do not remove the players from the battle, but instead change their roles.

Due to the much more effective turrets, close range attacks on the cap ships are extremely suicidal, if not impossible. So players attempting to destroy the ship or its turrets are forced to attack from long range with missiles or rail guns. This leaves them wide open to fighter attack. Since the cap ships can now defend themselves properly, the battle for the players is now about warding off long range bombers and destroying enemy interceptors before they can attack your own bombers.

Well said, greengeek.

My player character is Whistler, for those of you who don't know.

Apology accepted...though I wasn't offended by anything you said.

I agree with greengeek.

I also agree with greengeek. Fighters are now supporting the capships, that's how I always expected it to be.

When I'm wrong I'm wrong. (It just might take me a few days to admit it though :)

Most people who participated in the battle had fun. The fact that the cap ships attacked each other added, not detracted from the battle.

I do stick with my original statement by saying the Capital ships have too much armor. Its not a problem when all the cap ships are alive and have turrets, but as soon as they lose turrets or only one cap ship is left the game is basically over. The Itani Cap ship lasted over 2.5 hours until 6 Hive Queens were called in to kill it.

And even taking out turrets was difficult. I fired 40 chaos swarms at one turret from about 900m away and the turret was still alive.

The basically instant kill turret beams did frustrate some people. After awhile players just couldn't afford to fight anymore. I think the average cost, for players, during the last battle was 400k to 800k in new ships. We will have to change our strategy a little and stay close to or in our cap ships until all the turrets are destroyed on the enemy ships. But with the current armor we would still have a hard time destroying an enemy cap ship if our ship also had no turrets.

So my suggestions:

1. Can we have a couple unofficial battles this week? No rules, just a couple of times when players know the cap ship will be spawned. Like Wednesday at 11pm and 11am GMT and Thursday at 11pm GMT. Just so everyone can experience the new changes fiest hand. I'll post the dates and time with your approval.

2. I think the turret armor and the Cap ship armor should be halved from their current levels.

3. Add a variety of weapons to the Cap ships. The super instant kill beams are too much for all the turrets.

4. I think scenario 2 is now obsolete. I don't think players can do any significant damage on the journey to B8. And it would only add time to the overall battle. But I could be wrong about that. But for now I'm sticking with scenario 1 for the next battle.
