Warp Hopping

I had the pleasure of witnessing a very rude flag tactic that needs to me remedied swiftly: Someone (a Gold vet) grabbed the red flag and kept jumping back and forth from 12-2 over and over and over. Since the battery is fully charged by the time the invulnerability wears off, they can jump back and forth indefinitely...or until the player gets tired.

Having the invulnerability after jump is a good feature, but there needs to be a separate jump timer to prevent users from exploiting it. What would be a good number? One minute jump-drive recharge time? Maybe there should be a limit to the number of jumps a player can make…forcing the player to land to refuel after x amount of jumps?

Actually, I witnessed this as well...and might I add that gold has made very disturbing habit of it over the last few days. In my discussion with my teammates and others in the game at the time, we figured out a pretty good system. Limit people to 3 jumps per minute. This allows the first jump, a headfake and then a return to your original course within the period of a minute (possibly a minute and a half).

Later, I thought about it more and realized that this tactic is really only annoying when someone has the flag. It is not needed to impose this sort of limit on everybody at all times. One could just as easily limit someone to two jumps per minute but only if they have the flag.

Just my thoughts.

Making those wormholes bigger didn't help either. I never understood the need to make 'em so big. Bleh.

for better possibility to hit hidden sectors i guess... only reason i warphopped ever was to get away from a pirate.

We'll, to set the record straight it was me.

I only capped because red capped our flag and so I wanted ot make it hard for them to comlete the cap. Almost immediately after I capped the Gold flag returned, so I was left on my own in 2 with the flag and, in the end, about five reds after me on both sides of the wormhole.
There was no way of exiting because they would have been on me with the 10 second delay, and I didn't want them to destroy me and get my bounty. I kept jumping to see if they'd go away, obviously not. So in the end I just tried to take some with me when I died. <failing miserably!>
I only usually do this to avoid pirates, but in this situation it was the only thing I could do to avoid destruction. I know its no excuse, but I'm not one to sit there and get blown up for the sake of it.

Perhaps the battery should only start charging when the invulnerability wears off, then at least the aggressors have a chance of making some hits before the person is able to jump again.

Roger you know you can log out to drop the flag that would have been easier.
Jun 02, 2003 Roger Ramjet link
Eldrad, I didn't know logging off mid-jump gave you enough time. Ive just tried it for the _first_ time and found it does, so I'll do that next time then.

Then again, isn't that another exploit?

Yes it is, but remember, choose the lesser of the two evils.

I loged off juring a jump the other day to avoid uncle dave, he chased me and just me with rockets, and said drop my cargo, so i warp and he followed, so i logged off juring the jump, a bit lame realy, but with a cargo worth 240k i didnt realy want to die :P

The idea of positioning people at seemingly random distances away from a wormhole is nice, but rather annoying.

For the jumper, it is VERY annoying because you could end up anywhere from inside the wormhole to 600m outside of it.

However, it is nice for an "honest" capper who is fleeing. He might get put up to 1200m in front of the pursuers, if they warped simultaneously.

Roger you aren't the only gold doing this. I was there for that incident (and if you had said something we would have let you log out...), but I've seen it other times as well. Like I said, you guys seem to be making a habit of this. Once a day at this point....

OK Nytemayre, were all agreed it needs fixing so try not to turn it into a flame war. I'm sure it's not only Golds as these things seem to go across all nations at the same time.

I think the fact that it isn't an aggressive exploit doesn't make it a major issue. They person doing it still has no weapons for as long as the attacker is unable to damage them.
When used at times other than flag capping it offers a very good chance of escape against single attackers (pirates), so should definately be left in the game and only slightly modified. Its only when you get a group against you that it turns into a stalemate.

I have offered a solution to modify it in the future, so lets hope the Dev's can tweak it to everyones liking.

I think ramming a person during the wormhole animation, causing their ship to spin out of control, should cause them to die at the other end of the wormhole. It only makes sense, considering the deadly G forces they'll be experiencing. They would end up being jello or something if they were to enter the wormhole like that.
Jun 02, 2003 portchop link
Since there are no shields and the ship with the most Hit points + best engine + best batteries doesn't mean life is garanteed with the "strafe-at-the-same-speed-as-the-speed-you-can-go-foward-as-if-you-had-
a-big-booster-on-the-side-that-makes-combat-like-a-first-person-
shooter". I think someone who has to warp hop forever to survive has the right to do it.

It must not be very pleasant for the one who's boost doesn't work 'cause he has the flags to warp hop lioke that so I think the people chasing him should just pick a sector and wait for the flag capturer to get away form the warp area. Maybe even separate and wait at both sides ... isn't that what /team "message" can be used for?

Jun 02, 2003 Nytemayre link
Thats rather....violent arolte.

But anyway Roger I agree its not a horrible thing, which is why i suggested that a warp per minute limit ONLY on cappers. That way we can all get away from pirates but it keeps this kind of incident from happening. I wasn't trying to turn this into a flame war but straightening out facts. We actually weren't complaining about you since you were preventing a cap. The incident we originally refered to was involving a gold initiated cap, which is why the cheap tactic was so bothersome. I'm sure all nations do it, but I have only seen a certain one do it. I felt that should be pointed out.

Portchop, what nation are you part of? I'd like to see your reaction to being capped in this manner. Even with 4 pilots on both sides of the warp it was extremely difficult to get even one shot to connect before the warp-invinceibility kicks in. Lightning mines are possible but it takes forever to cover the area of a standard wormhole. You seem to feel that this warp restriction would turn this game into too much of an fps...what on earth are you talking about? This is to prevent irritating and unfair tactics. A game should not involve a strategy where the winner is simply the person with the most patience or free time.
Jun 02, 2003 CSZeus link
heh... good call Arolte... we should be able to knock their warp drives off-line somehow.

But seriously... I don't think we need to do anything about it. If a person has the flag and they have to warp-hop to "survive," then they're strongly out-skilled/out-numbered (as is more often the case in a cap) and wouldn't survive anyway... so they had no reason to get the flag. Also, it seems to be a rather strange situation, since Roger had to get *through* 12 and 2 first before he could start hopping, so whatever odds there were that caused him to hop obviously weren't there before.
I suppose there needs to be a point... if people do it, they're not getting anywhere. Just wait on them. Especially with the flag... they have no turbo, where are they going? Now, if they do it to wait for teammate backup, that's annoying. But if not, they're wasting just as much time of their own as they are of the person that keeps an eye on them.

Besides, I thought you could just jettison the flag? Maybe I'm wrong...

There has been cases where the delay WAS to allow teammate backup to show up....repeatedly. If you can't fight off the team you are capping, you shouldn't be capping and deserve to die or drop and run. Its part of the risk of grabbing a flag. Sucks if your bounty is high.

this game (combat) is already too much like FPS.. it should have x-wing-alliance-tie-fighter style combat and physics (much like arcade mode + joystick control, No mouse look, no sideway at the same speed as you can go forward).
Jun 02, 2003 Nytemayre link
OK, I'll agree with you there. But this warp limit would not make it any worse. That was my point.
Jun 02, 2003 Renegade ++RIP++ link
why make it in something that you already know and not keep it as something fresh, why going back to the x-wing series. Vendetta isn't called X-wing, it's called vendetta.

Besides, I like mouse look, I like going sideways at the same time as you go forward, I like it very much, and I really wouldn't want it to alter, because I would then just play some more BG2 or another game like that.

It is supposed to be a mix of RPG and FPS, and the FPS part is for the moment perfectly balanced as it is used.
