A few days ago, the VO community lost one of its best. David "Ninjr" Flory had been playing regularly for over six years, always a friendly, positive and supportive influence. At different points he was an active contributor to the forums, particularly Suggestions and Community Projects, and also helped out in the PCC. He was also one of our eldest players, starting when he was over 70, and proving that you're never too old to explore the starlit skies.
He was diagnosed with liver cancer a few weeks ago, and I happened to be in-game the day of the diagnosis, and he messaged me to pass along his enjoyment of the game and community over the years, and wish us the best. He was very positive, grateful and happy with the life he had led. I really hoped he was going to pull through.
It's always a bit of a conundrum for me to be sure how much personal information we should ever share about anyone, even when they pass. In this case he had been posting on the forums for years under his real name, which makes it a bit simpler, so I'll go ahead and include this link to his obituary.
To commemorate the loss of a long-time comrade, I'm going to look into creating some kind of "UDV Ninjr" persistent capship, patrolling the waters of UIT space, or maybe renaming a station for him, or some such?

I'm saddened to hear this, Ninjr was a friend, helping me found EMS, and it'll be a real loss for one of the more gentle personalities of the game.

You should load that capship up with UC cells that don't drop if it's popped... that way when people fly by with cargo scanners, or ask why they are there we can re-tell the story.

That is sad news. Maybe the ship could offer free repairs for all.
If you made a trident that occasionally showed up to help new players kill queens and provide reps that would be an amazing tribute to the efforts he put in to helping newer players. It seems helping people with technology was a life-long commitment of his.
Ninjr taught me to stack queens and helped me build a trident and he was an all-round great guy. I remember one time when pup dived him at the conquerable station and blew him up he was such a good sport about it, he muttered a few words about how he was a silly griefer and that was the end of it.
I once tipped him 100,000,000c for repairing me in B-8 and he was surprised at that, such modesty in a person should be rewarded, it's sad that he wasn't rewarded with a bit of luck in real life against his cancer battle.

Yes, thank you very much for telling us inc...he helped us all when we were new at this game..he is th one who tought me about cells and he gave so much to us. Rip ninjr.
Ninjr's presence in the game will certainly be missed. I always looked forward to his appearances, offerings of advice, and his eventual sign-off with "Happy bytes from the Texas Division of EMS."
I think a persistent cap ship, roaming UIT space, offering free repairs, bits of advice to anyone that hails, and a quick sector message of "Happy bytes from the Texas Division of EMS" before jumping out would be a grand tribute.

What I'll remember most is his patience and humility for helping others, like all the times that he'd log in and spend an hour or so flying around to all corners of the universe solely to distribute ultra cells barely above cost, then log off.
Regarding the origins of the name Ninjr, here's a quote from his application to EMS:
"For those interested in such trivia the name [Ninjr] comes from my CA. license plate on my 600 Ninja Motorcycle. It was the second one in San Jose, CA., with my son's being the first. I gave it away to a teenager about 4 years ago, hope he didn't kill himself. I've investigated 6 fatal acccidents involving riders of 600 Ninas, none of which were the rider's fault. In all 6 cases they moving slowly in traffic and someone turned left in front of them. The deaths were somewhat the driver's fault as none of them were wearing helmets, but the collisions weren't. They were the result of what I warn would be motorcyclists about, M/C riders tend to be invisible in traffic. People pull out in front of U and turn left in front of U, constantly. Constant alertness, and none of those retarded street wheelies, is the price of survival. Never put a scratch on mine or me while I owned it. Other times is a story for another time."

Ninjr was an amazing presence in game, his absence will be felt dearly. He was always helping others, and a real boon to the [EMS] tag. I remember being invited to his mining group one day in Azek, and him showing me all the best spots around the stations.

The capship is a great idea, including the free repairs. But also make it shoot ships within range with repair modules and occasionally drop a UC powercell.

This is sad news indeed. Dave and I always shared stories of our long but disparate careers in and around downtown San Jose, CA. He heard many a detail of my lengthy adoption process and never once failed to ask after my "co-pilot" once it was done. His lifelong study of Aikido and long history of service to his community, wherever he found it, made Ninjr the heart and soul of EMS: Selfless and patient help for any who asked, without thought of reward nor ulterior motive or agenda.

A legend leaves us. Ninjr was one of the truly kind souls in our little 'verse. He will be missed. :(
Christmas Eve I ran into an [EMS] and the first thing I asked was after Ninjr - he let me know that he was having some pretty serious medical issues, but I didn't expect to hear this news this soon.
Way back when I played a lot, I got to know Ninjr in-game simply because he was frequently on as well and he went wherever the [EMS] role-play took him, which was not infrequently the same place I was blasting people. His character could be counted on to come assist no matter what - even if you'd taken damage in Dau or Arta C. and couldn't dock to repair because you were KOS from all the pirating you'd been doing. It was refreshing to find a truly neutral guild dedicated to that kind of gameplay.
But most of my interactions with him occurred by PM and had little to nothing to do with VO. They are memorable for the quality and humor of his (the player's) conversation. Even without having known him outside VO, it is clear to me the world is a poorer place for his loss.
I very much like the idea of a roving, persistent NPC named *Ninjr. It would be great if it could have repair guns and deliver aid when hailed. A station would be a grander tribute in some ways, but I really never saw him in one...he was always out, playing the game with basically everyone. He will be missed.

Sorry to hear this. I enjoyed chatting with him about things in and out of game. He seemed to be a genuinely nice guy and I had always hoped we could have met up in R/L some day.
