Vendetta Online Official Discord Server.

Hi, there's been a proliferation of discord.. stuff.. lately.

I've been super busy, but among other things, as of the last week or so, we have a direct relationship with Discord, at a corporate level, and we have our own (nascent) official Discord server, here:

http://discord.gg/vendetta

Obviously, it's still pretty sparse, I need to convert over a lot of our rules, add welcome messages and other things, but it'll happen as I get time. I'm "launching" it a bit earlier than expected, due to the number of other recent discord-server proposals.

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade as far as community-driven setups, I'm generally all for supporting this kind of thing.. but we will probably only be allowing a single discord-relay into the game, and that will be from our own official Discord server.

I'm open to the relay itself being run by the community for the moment, although we may eventually roll our own mechanism for that, as we eventually add more direct Discord integration with the game.

The channel for the relay will be read-only to the public, with a separate access level permission for speaking on the relay channel. This is to clearly indicate that speaking in 100 via discord is a privilege, and not a right.

Yes, it means people will have to be specifically approved to chat via discord, which will start out by just me, until we get some Discord moderators. It also means that if you lose discord-relay access for being a toxic asshat, then you're not getting it back again.

If Discord-sourced chat ever becomes a problem, the whole relay may just be moved to read-only, and people can join the game to be able to "send" chat (it's been a contentious topic in the past). But for now, we'll try this and see how it works.

Lastly.. you're of course welcome to run your own servers and do your own things, just not with a relay into the game. If we get too many people announcing servers, I may ask for those announcements to go into a single thread on Community Projects or something..

Feedback welcome, although responses may be a little delayed.. lot going on..

I take that general use discord-relays going down should extend to IRC relays as well? I *think* you want just the one relay so things can be more properly moderated according to the game's rules.

Cool that there will be an official discord, and sounds like we may even get some rich presence too (maybe?)!

Let's leave IRC out of this discussion for the moment. I don't want to cloud this thread up too much.

This policy, for the moment, applies to Discord relays.

I'm open to Suggestions threads on:

- Adding channels or options to the Official Discord server.

- Ideas for implementation of Rich Presence. See the Discord SDK to get an idea of what's possible.

I would suggest the following role-specific channels:

- Serco Nationalism
- Itani Nationalism
- Trade
- Outlaws and Undesirables

But I would caution against too much fragmentation in the discussions until there is wider adoption of the Discord chat.

I'm sure some would like the rich presence but it's not something I would want in my game-play so I'll let others comment on that.

~Maybe~ a location for us to post content we create, but strictly VO related content of course.

Umm ok how are you going to block relays? I’m pretty sure if you some how disalow tcp traffic from igins in the app there will be a huge spike in subscriber loss.

There are a variety of ways we can see who is relaying, if people are imprudent enough to push it that far. Also, I don't really care about "subscriber loss" due to people keeping accounts just to relay traffic.

Having a bunch of different Discord relays is not in the best interests of the game. I'm working towards a Steam launch and other prime-time exposure opportunities. Cleaning up stuff like this should be expected.. and welcomed.

My concern was just blockng tcp traffic in plugins

Why would they even do that? This doesn't need to be some foolproof automated solution. Relayed messages are very obvious. If a mod sees messages on 100 like "<TheChaoticMouth> (CyberLeah1992) u guys wats goin on in game shud I log in?", he says to himself, "Aha!" and he shoves a bar of virtual soap into TheChaoticMouth. Done, without a need to break anybody's plugins.

"Cleaning up stuff like this should be expected.. and welcomed."

Yes please! Fragmentation is annoying.

I have zero need to break plugins in order to solve this.. no worries. Pizza's point is one obvious case, but honestly, we have a lot of different options.

Anyway.. let's move on from that.

FYI that I've started flagging a few people for 100 Relay access on Discord (not that we.. have a relay yet anyway). But, more formally, I'd like people to start posting requests for access on this Sticky thread. Do that instead of PMing me on Discord.. I'd like there to be a clear connection between your VO account and your Discord account.

Nihilus is on Discord now, with Guide privs, so he can read the thread and add the "game relay speakers" role as needed. I'll try to catch people as well.

Please allow users in the Discord server to change their nicknames.

Also, currently users without the relay role do not have access to the message history of the relay channel. I thought that access to read only was allowed.

No point in showing history if the bot doesnt work yet, Piemnt; likely in a testing phase.

Even those with the role cant see message history, actually.

As the one to have the first discord relay(two way) I approve this.
😂
The relay is pretty much public and few people have it but will keep mine off ch100 when yours is up.

I would ask that relay access only be blocked to channel 100 for the relays that already exist, and possibly even allow them to keep one-way read only access. I do understand reducing relay relay spam in 100, but I would still like a way outside the game to see discussions in 100, and would definitely like to be able to continue communicating in guild chat through relays.

Edit: Nevermind, seems you already allowed the relays to continue in guild chat, thanks! As much as I found the discord antics entertaining and kept us all in touch with some inactive players, maybe they'll log in now.

Seems like a good idea for you guys to include what name you want to be changed to in the Discord as well. I'd say just include it in the access thread, unless someone has a better idea?
Jul 13, 2018 incarnate link
Yeah, I don't see a lot of value in allowing people to change their nicknames. Nihilus can change it for you if you have a specific request.

Nevermind, seems you already allowed the relays to continue in guild chat, thanks!

I did? I don't remember saying anything one way or the other on that. I hadn't made a decision there.

At the same time, my focus for the moment is Discord -> 100 (or really, any public channel). In that case I definitely only want one relay.

And I don't see why it shouldn't be allowed and that we should rely on someone to do it for us (Which would result into making something simple take long, and allow for the possibility of a mistake happening, and then the user would have to go again and tag someone and then wait) while being something simple that only adds a second name to your user in that specific server (Just to add that adding and changing nicknames is allowed in most gaming Discord servers)

It would be great for people who don't use Discord solely for VO and would like to add a nickname according to their character/account, or to add a guild tag alongside their username. It's not a big deal, Incarnate.
Jul 13, 2018 Pizzasgood link
Piment, we don't need to change our names frequently or easily. You ask a mod to set it to your account name or main character's name when you first join, and then you're done. You'd only ever have to have it changed again if you used your character's name instead of account name and wanted to shift focus to a different one. If you're doing that frequently, use your account name or something else that you can just leave constant.

As for private guild-chat relays, your odds of not annoying the devs and getting shut down will probably be higher if you don't use relay-bots to accomplish it. Bots tie up resources, and you don't need a guild relay when no guild members are actually online to be relayed. Instead, just share the relay code among your guild members. The first player to log in becomes the relay. If he logs out while other members are still online, one of them takes over. If they all log out, then there's no relay until somebody logs in again, which is fine. This way you're not consuming extra resources. And yes, manually doing it this way might be a hassle, but you could automate the process. It is worth expending some effort to minimize the burden you place on the devs and servers.
