The battle for sector 13!

This probably should be in Role Playing, but I humbly request that it stay in general discussions for a day so that it may garner some attention before being banished.

Many of us have taken part in the ad hoc battles that flare up around a promising flag capture attempt. What I propose would be an arranged battle in sector 13, or some other lag-free sector, between the combined might of two nations. It would be announced a week ahead of time, to allow for debates over times and the exact date, as well as the sector over which to fight. Once a place and time were agreed upon by a majority, they would be announced and players would sign up for the nation they wish to fight under.

The goal would be to have twenty or more people from the two nations (or all three!) on each squad. At the designated time they would gather on opposite sides of the sector, then when a neutral party released them they would fight to the death. Once you die once you are out of the battle. Anything goes except mines - I think it would be more fun for all if the battle were decided by skill and teamwork than by who can l-mine and de-mine the best.

A dual purpose would be served by such a battle. On the one hand, the devs get to have a stress test of the server's ability to handle relatively huge amounts of people per sector. On the other, if the battle doesn't crash the server, the participants get to enjoy the thrill of gladiatorial space combat. I know some of the best times I've had in the Vendetta test have been during the random furballs that happen now and again, and the prospect of a bigger, semi-organized battle seems like the logical next big thrill.

[Example:

Battle for sector 13: Serco vs Itani

Serco Pilots:
Red1
Red2
Red3
.
.
.
Red20

Itani Pilots:
Blue1
Blue2
.
.
.
Blue20

Third Party
Gold1

At 12:00 Noon EST on January 34, 9123, both forces will assemble in sector 13, seperated by 3km. At 9:10pm EST the battle will be started by Gold1 with the command, "Let combat commence!" The nation left standing at the end of the day is the winner!

:Example]

This would require an unprecedented level of non-anarchy among the noted griefers and pirates of all nations. I hope that they can put aside their lust for pks for just long enough for the battle to officially start.

lol, yeah at about 12am I am gone. I love Vendetta but the nightlife is a lot more real and well, in general fun!

On Saturdays or Sundays I would participate though. Otherwise Im probably at HS or asleep or on a date or out with my friends (aka, Double Date).

PS: During Itani vs NT battles, the SDF would be willing to send an ambassador should a DSG craft be unavailable.

A great idea.. BUT docking for repairing and most importantly refilling is allowed, right?
Oh, and I'll be happy to participate. 15-20 GMT works great for me.

I don't really think the stress testing part is necissary, a couple weeks back we had about 30 people and 2 frigates in 9, all fighting, and we had relatively no problems.

Hmm, I think I need to make a more formal set of rules. (Subject to debate, of course. I'll add as more are formalized.)

[Rules:

1) You only get one ship. If you die once, you must remain either outside the sector or in dock until the battle is over.

2) No mines.

3) No busses. Whoever the referee is gets the honor of the EC-88.

4) No docking, for any reason. You are here to fight to the death. If you just can't use anything but tri-flare then you better aim damn well.
:Rules]

The ref would be someone not in the two nations fighting. So if the battle was Serco vs Neutral, an Itani would ref. The ref would keep track of who killed who, start the battle on time and blacklist those who break the rules. He's in a bus so no one could possibly mistake him for a combatant, and so he doesn't get overwhelmed by the temptation to interfere.

On repairing and rearming... I'm not sure. I want to say no to preserve the spirit of a gladiatorial space battle. You have to keep fighting until either you die or your enemies do, no matter what. If you dock, you are out of the fight. That would also help prevent sunflare spam - you need to use them wisely - and ramming. If you run out of flares and are hurt, well then you better have an energy weapon and be able to support your teammates.

That's another thing. I hope (but don't really expect) that this will be a battle between Nation 1 and Nation 2, not 20 people from Nation 1 and 20 from Nation 2. Teamwork. Make subgroups, have a wingman. If you do find yourself out of ammo, with only a single tach and at 30% damage, retreat a little and go support someone with more health by harrassing his target.

Tentative Date/Time/Place for first battle:

Sector 13 - Saturday, January 17 - 1700 GMT

(5pm GMT, 12 Noon EST.)

That's next weekend, at a reasonable hour for all. If you have a suggestion for a better time/place, put it below. If you want to participate, put the nick you would use and your nation below. Whichever two nations have the most signed up by Friday (16th of January) are the fighters, and whichever nation is left out volunteers a referee. If more time is needed I'll move the battle to two weeks from now, the 24th.

Time is of course of the essence, lest the bleak possibility of Vendetta shutting down come to pass.

As I said, I'm in (add Evhun Cerundir). ;)
Will refilling be allowed or not? I hope it will!
Jan 11, 2004 Starfisher link
1v1 eh? Man I'm gonna OWN you!

As for repairing and refilling... no.

Like I said previously, it will force sunflare users to be more careful and encourage more tactical play. I know you love your tri-flare, Archon, but it might be time to rotate in a gauss or a tachyon. ;)

If there's enough of an uproar I'll allow rearming but.. as of now, no.
