This is a game....

Wow....does it seem like there are a few people around here that are forgetting this is a game? Or is it just my imagination?

I have been playing computer based games for about 30 years now. I've played games that were good and memorable, games that were mediocre and just good for killing time and games that should never have been released and have been forgotton over the years. I've watched the development of games from simple text based single player games to first person multiplayer games to the MMOG that are becoming popular today.

In all this time and all the hundreds of games I have played, the primary purpose of each and everyone was to have fun. It didn't matter if the fun was in the form of sillyness, in the form of a challenge or even had no point at all...the primary objective was to have fun. If a game wasn't fun...it didn't get played long.

Now we come to VO...another game. Like all other games it's primary purpose is to serve as entertainment...to have fun in. It's not designed as a place to relieve daily stress, a place to create a artifical ego or a place to somehow prove self-worth. It's a place for like-minded people to enjoy a game environment, to enjoy the diversity of people from many different areas and to interact with those people within the limits put in place by the developers of the game.

It seems that about 98% of the people in this game get it. But somehow the few percent that don't get the most attention and cause the most disruption. These are the people I avoid. I won't join their guilds, I won't join their BP groups and I won't engage in PvP with these people. See, I play the game for fun...if you distract from my fun I won't interact with you.

I'm not in this game to prove a point, I'm not in this game to gain dominance over other players, I'm not in this game to make myself feel important or to create a image of myself that I'm not.

I am in this game to have fun. By and large, I enjoy the community of people in this game. I enjoy the challenges the game presents. Beleive it or not, I enjoy coming through a wormhole and discovering a pirate type sitting there..it's part of the game. I enjoy defending a convoy from attackers and visa-versa...and I enjoy the conversations I have with these people after they succesfully raid my convoy...or visa-versa. I enjoy being just plain overwhelmed in PvP...and the conversation afterwards with my opponent giving me pointers. I enjoy the times I do win PvP and being able to share my bit of experience to help the person I won against. I enjoy chatting with new players in the game and their exclamations of "Wow, thats cool!" as I help them learn various aspects of the game.

Any game is what you make of it. If you choose to be hostile and antagonistic...then expect the same in return...and don't cry about it. If you choose to have fun and participate with other people in the game you'll find it a warm and enriching experience...

From what I have seen over the months I have been here, the developers and the guides here are good people. Out of their enjoyment of creation they have provided a place for people to interact in and have fun in. They must enjoy what they are creating or they wouldn't be doing it. I can imagine there is a certain element of pride that goes into creating a game like this and watching people enjoy theselves inside their creation night after night. I can also imagine there is a certain amount of anguish that occurs when people abuse the game and each other for no good reason. Devs, guides....keep up the good work, I appreciate your efforts and I'm not going anywhere. The small amount I pay to participate in your creation is well spent in my mind...you've given me a fun game to participate in.

This game may not be for you....if it's not, then I wish you luck finding something that is. Many of us have decided we like this game, and we remember that it is just a game. We like to interact with others like ourselves that enjoy this game...and, most importantly of all...we have fun.

Thanks Beamrider.

I'm often amazed that this little game generates such strong feelings (in me as well sometimes).

i'm only going to argue with one point. :)

"-It's not designed as a place to relieve daily stress,-"

what good IS FUN if you dont let go of your stress while you have it. IMO any game is by definition a place to relieve daily stress.

other than that little semantic detail.. good post. :)

I would have liked Beamrider's post more if he had named names.

Admit it, you were talking about me, wren't you?

Weren't you?!

Joking aside, I do play this game to relieve stress (mostly at the expense of anyone else on, sorry guys <.<), and when people ingame bother me to the point where being in-game actually is causing me stress, I will either speak out, flip out, or log off. Once I've actually done all three!

Still, apart from the stress and no-names thing, I agree with the post.

I imagine the difference is that you guys mean that you relieve the stress of daily life by having fun in the game, rather than taking out your stress on other players and making the game less fun for others.

Roguelazer: Wake up Neo. The matrix has you.

Who is Beamrider? Never met him but he(?) sounds like a well-informed, intelligent, level-headed individual. So I concur with his post.

I play this game mainly to prove to myself that I can still shoot the crap out of 16-year olds with my 34-year old reflexes. Of course, that premise is not always proven successful...

LOL Far as I know only Whistler & Ghostwolf (and now you Black Omega) are older than me. (Edited, sorry Ray & SarahAnne)

Perhaps we should make an old guys guild. (A new GUILD! GREAT IDEA!)

Sorry, Ray and I are whippersnappers. Ray is only 30 and I'm not quite 30 yet.
