"and go from being a rather easy pop to being almost impossible to down."
Heh, thats me, one day, i'll be king of the hill, next day, not come close >.< i'd never rate myself as a top pilot for this reason, and aye, I fight for the fun of it, not to prove anything, so of course i'll risk it all :D
Would I like to be a *top gun* ? no, cos i've seen people *not want* to fight these people for fear of losing.

i fight you with fear of loosing anyways.
That's the reason why people stop getting better, they fear losing too much. They start worrying about their ego, making excuses, etc... And the result is the "alpha leetism"
this is not, by any means restricted to alphas, though on average they tend to suffer from it more.
I too suffer from it occasionally. But most of the time you just have to suck it up and tell yerself "I'll do it differently next time"

Just for the record...
I find it harder to land a hit on Shape than I do on Martin... then again... Martin is really scary sometimes.
WOMBAT 9!

Wow, Shape, that's... exactly my philosophy...
Never fear losing! No excuses! No ego! No 'leetism!
Of course, the other part about "getting better" does not seem to be coming my way, however...

I got mentioned here as dangerous..hehe. But aye, death is just another learning experience. Hell I dont back down from any fight and if I lose its cause for that particular fight, the other pilot was better, if I win, I was better that time. Anyone can beat another and be beaten. If I had to name my top list it would have to be in no particular order:
Martin- he's just psycho
Shape - is everywhere and nowhere at the same time.
Alamar- rails...nuff said
Yoda - just plain fun to fight, and has accounted for most of
my deaths since I have been here..hehe
Niki- all I can say is good luck..
Splash- put him in a centaur and wow..
Tumble - makes an Atlas of all things scary...
Many other pilots I enjoy fighting but time requires me to make the list fairly short. Just a note tho Im always up for a rematch, win or lose :-)

Shape, a lot of the respect I have for you as a pilot comes from the fact that I've fought you while you were flying almost any ship and layout VO could offer. most people are either light or heavy pilots, energy or flares, they have *some* setup they are weak in. I never had that experience with you. and I think a lot of this comes from the idea of saying "I'll try something new next time".
watching you and Holden slug it out night after night after night at times was really neat. new ships, new tactics, new flight patters, new results.

I couldn't agree with Terje's comment more... I've probably been one of Shape's worse students - simply out of inconsistency... and even when *he* is inconsistent... he is a force to contend with... (I *know* he has been frustrated by my "distance issues" in the past... but I have been working on them, when I can).
I look forward to someday being able to "slug it out" night after night... maybe then, I will start to garner the benefit of his teachings... I temendously respect several folks ingame (and I bet you already know who you are) - and I often seek their offerings of instruction.
I do know that I personally really don't care who is "better" at this stuff. There are simply good peeps here (on both sides of the "good guy/bad guy" isle). I'm here to have fun... and I do have a lot of fun - even at the most mundane activities... and for that... thanks.

Well thanks guys, I really appreciate the comments.

One, you're really good at close range. Gavan and a number of other BLAK's have said the same.
As far as staying back? its not so bad, I just feel that you learn more when you jump in and give it a shot. Its hard to get a feel for close range fighting without practice, getting a feel for how your opponent moves and using that. Distance control is an important skill too (one which I'm afraid I still have not learned).
I guess my problem with distance control, is that it seems to be a response to your opponent having the advantage at close range. Its giving up ground, and saying, "ok, I can't possibly win at that range". I hate that outlook.
It's probably why I'm so bad against flares. Where's the fun in letting them have my turf.
Bravery/Foolhardiness is not always an ideal tactical solution for a particular fight, but in a long term sense, it benefits you more.
Remove all yer crutches to learn, then, if you absolutely HAVE to win a fight, use whatever means necessary.
In my experience, you rarely EVER have to win a fight.

Yeah, the fights with Holden, AND the rest of the BLAK crew, testing all manner of loadouts, were always awesome, even if it got us complaining on these boards about balance all day long.
We need to do it again, but first, we need a bloody update!
(I'd also like to add, that I've been trying the lower rails, and while they're fun, I am still amazed that you pulled off 500 pks with them... that was a brilliant aimbot you wrote :P... I kid, I kid)

Awww...all the kind words about me!
Thanks guys.

well, I didn't get 500PKs with the lower rails, I got something like 380ish. :-(
Thanks, Gavan. ^^
You know, I spent all of yesterday trying to think of a nicer way to say this, but I really couldn't, so here it is in it's unadulterated state. Enjoy it while it lasts.

fair, the backpatting was getting terminal.
On the other hand, I enjoy this backpatting a lot. What's wrong with it :).
And, the fact that it makes genka sick just just makes it better!

I agree, its about time we had a little back-patting instead of back-stabbing and flaming and such against each other. It never hurts to be nice to each other, and lookie there I managed to get the rule of the board in there :-)
I LOVE YOU ALL! Except Space Hunter and Anazi. Can't stand those two...
/me notices that he isn't on any of the lists and goes back to his little corner and cries.
But really though, everybodies ego gets dented on occasion even mine (although i try to stay open to anything). And yes I know im far from getting on any list of top guns (except maybe most annoying whiners) but its all in good fun :D
For the rest, my time during VO is a time of slapping and getting slapped down but always standing up and going on even during hardship (although I will whine about it :D) mostly because that is the way that you'll learn and can have fun.
Always winning gets boring, which is the reason why people search for other setups.
