Reduce backing up speed by 25m/s

It's something that needs to be tweaked. Right now, it's unrealistic, unfair, and bloody annoying. Reducing it by 25 for all ships will let us see how much it needs to be changed to be fair.

Right now, you can back up, and just dodge, basicly forever. This would help stop people from doing that

Interesting idea. The only problem I see is that the Prom would eat everything alive, more so than it already does.

Rejected. It will favor rocket rammers and AGT addicts. If I want to be 100m away from you and you want to be 75m away why should you have even more advantage than just the turbo boost. <joke>Maybe we should add the reverse turbo? :)

No way. There would be no defense against already deadly proms, defense against rockets would be severely weakened, and quad rails would be utterly useless.

well then reduce the back strafing speed and nerf the prom

This would certainly change PvP quite a bit.

No.

...okay then, reducing it by 10ms?

It needs to be nerfed someway.

No it doesn't. It doesn't make sense as far as the gameplay goes, nor does it make sense in terms of the ingame contexts.

The point of gravitic propulsion is that you can move in any direction at any time at whatever your maximum speed is. An artificial limit of that sort is worse than the so-called "rubber-band" that prevents us from going faster than 225m/s.

Also, if you reduce just the "backing up" speed by 25m/s, don't you think people are smart enough to move *forward* at top speed and just turn around with flight-assist off, keeping the real max speed?

I can see perhaps some speciic ships being given better forward thrust than reverse... the valkyrie, prom and raptor particularily. Speed shouldn't be limited, but thrust.

I think how everyone backs up continuiously is rather lame; it makes it easy for the defender to run and dodge

When I fly a Valkerie, one of the advantages I have is its excellent chasing abilities. Someone can backroll indefinitely, and be pretty safe that way, but the moment he turns around to flee, he's mine. I've done a wee bit of boxing with my friends, playing with shinais, and stuff. I've found that someone can backpedal just as fast as I can advance without flat out running. It's annoying, but the key is just to be patient, and wait for them to trip over an asteroid/fence. In that respect it's realistic, given my opinion.

However, it would be interesting to see some ships with different thrusts in different directions.

Actually I agree with zamzx.

As it stands fighting is kind've stupid. Why? because realistically, any idiot with half a brain wouldn't let themselves get killed. And that's the only way to die in this game. (Unless you're flying a taur or a revenant, in which case I have no sympathy for you anyway)

I don't think we can reject this idea on the basis that certain ships or weapons would be too powerful. We need to make sure that engagements are fun, and quick, while still skill-oriented. it would lead to more, chase type scenarios. Where one side attacks, then turbos out of range... etc...

Otherwise, Wars are a lot harder to accomplish. And lets face it, Wars are what you want to fight. I personally love dueling, but it won't carry this game. Multiplayer content is going to have to take away the potential for a player to simply flee a fight slowly.

(SuperMegaMynt: except, that no one should backroll into a roid, I mean it happens sometimes, and its possible to do to players who don't watch their indicator, but its really not a solution to backrolling)

After reading the responses, I agree that reducing reverse thrust would be better than reducing reverse top speed. I think that this would change the dynamic of PvP for the better. Backrolling and general full-reverse tactics would be less effective, and that is a good thing in my opinion.

I also strongly agree with Shapenaji about the future of VO combat. Multiplayer combat (consisting of more than 2 players) is much more interesting and dynamic than 1 on 1 combat in my opinion. This also means accepting that a large group of players can attack a small group or a single player, and that is fine from a RP sense. The VO universe is based around a war, and in war soldiers do not line up 1 by 1 to attack an enemy that they despise. The outcomes of various conflicts such as Serco vs. Itani, Pirates vs. Vipers, etc... should all eventually be contingent on the balance of power pertaining to each side of the conflict and not solely on individual pilot skill. Wars are not won on the merits of a single soldier, but on the organization, planning, and cooperation of an entire side. This is not meant to diminish the value of player skill or consensual 1 on 1 PvP, which certainly has its place, but that place is not Deneb B12 or Latos H2. I think as VO's player-base grows and the various wars become more relevant, a lot of people are going to have to realize that. Yay for ganking (coming from someone who is outnumbered the vast majority of the time)!

Sorry for going off-topic. What were we talking about again?

Reducing the speed of which ships go backwards.

Fight a Valk. You do not have the option run away.

Fight a Prom. You sure bet you do.

No. This is a BAD suggestion.

Backing up in order to keep your distance is a valuable skill you must learn. It is what makes Roda, Mecha, Daggoth, Norseman and Kixkizzle (among others) so deadly. Conversely, dealing with people who keep their distance is also a skill you must learn. Asking the game be artificially changed just because you can't deal with them is dumb and disrespectful of the effort people have put into learning these skills.

Wait... did you just say Daggoth was deadly?

Pointsman: The developers have stated multiple times that they do not intend to increas speeds beyond a certain limit, the reason being that it makes the game unnecessarily boring, because it would deteriorate to high-speed passes and, eventually, BVR weaponry. They have also tried it and found it didn't work.

Or at least that is what I thought they said.
