Yeah, it looks very well rendered and designed. Looks like you got some experience in 3D. But the design itself isn't my taste. Nevertheless it beats the crap outta my 15-minute sketch.

=)

I wonder if everyone here realizes that Guild cannot, legally, use any of these designs for fear of a lawsuit.

Ow? What could be legally wrong with my designs par example? (besides I'm dutch, so if I would want to sue them it would be a lot more harder for me than for them).
Nov 18, 2003 Magus link
They would be stealing your idea. You would need to give them expressed written permission giving over your picture to them. It just isn't worth the risk for a company to use user submitted ideas unless they hold a contest spelling out that all submissions are propterty of Guild Software. Since you are Dutch, you probably do not realize that we Americans are a very letigious people, especially when it comes to companies and intellectual property. You can get sued for just about anything, so better safe that sorry.

So why don`t they hold a *simple* contest? It doesn`t needs to be that great... just needs some simple ¨submit¨ and ¨I will accept the legal crap¨ buttons.

And yes I know about the ¨you can be sued for just about anything in the United ¨I'm fat, so I sue McDonalds¨ States¨.

If guild chose to use a submission, they could simply have the "artist" sign off their rights to it. There probably should be some legalese posted however.

(One of the main reasons other countries appear to have lower litigation rates is that they typically provide more government and first-party compensation benefits to injured accident victims, thus making resort to the litigation process both less
necessary and less lucrative than it is in the United States.)

Vlad: Which is why I allowed, "...but then again, the Viper is a pretty standard 'space fighter' design."

Maybe.

I prefer to think of it as having a well considered opinion. In my well considered opinion, the Colonial Viper and the Warthog have too much in common for it to be completely coincidental that they look alike; however, it is possible that too artists would have arrived at basically the same design independently because ultimately the design is nothing more than a hybridization of a rocket (imagine the Viper on a launch pad facing straight up) and a mid-70's military jet (for example compare with a F-101 http://www.photovault.com/Link/Military/AirForce/show.asp?tg=MYFVolume10/MYFV10P08_09
or F-111 http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/fw1a.jpg). Similarily, compare the Centurian to the F-5 http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/f-5-cf11601.jpg

But as for the similarities, well judge for yourself:

http://underworld.fortunecity.com/pacman/106/fs2mods/bsg/colvip/collvip.html

So see, there I go again... trying to save face. :)

(And what is the above sentence but an attempt to try to save face when it occurs to someone that I'm again trying to save face...)

(And what is the above sentence....)

:)

The Warthog design actually started out as something totally different, and it was the first ship that I modeled from concept art. The body was similar to the roboship, and it had giant curvy forward-swept wings on it. I modeled the wings and the body, but it didn't look good in 3d. So I elongated the body, and changed the engines. The body looked better, but it didn't fit with the wings, so I ditched those and added the dinky little fins. I liked the overall shape, so I reworked most of the details. And that was that. I think I redid the texture somewhere along the lines... but that's basically how the ship came about. Iterative design process.

Will we see the Hornet in the future even though Phil no longer works for Guild?

=(

the hornet is one of the better looking ships in the game.

the valk needs a redesign. :)
the atlas too.
Nov 14, 2003 Arolte link
Why does the Valk need a redesign? My guess is that they'll look better once external and unique weapon ports are implemented. At least you'll have some level of ship appearance customizability in that respect, albeit not as drastic as most people would like.

/me has a host(good 10 meg?) of 3D models of ships floating around(made on Wings) and a few guns and the like, and would post them, but he has nowhere to have them hosted from... :/

oh yeah, I'm not much of an artist, so I haven't tried texturing em...

Anybody wanna host a bunch o' models for me? :P
