Station homing requirements

Oct 04, 2015 Roda Slane link
I suggest that homing at some stations may have requirements.

Specifically:

Corvus: Level 2/-/-/2/-, and at least enough crystals and credits to buy a basic centurion and a fast charge power cell.

All other stations in grey: 3/-/-/-/-, and enough crystals, credits, and faction standing to buy a heavy power cell, and a basic centurion.

And further, if you die without meeting these requirements, that you be rehomed, either in the nation of your highest standing, or if hated by all nations, at the (non corvus) grey space station of highest standing, or if hated by all other factions, corvus.

Further, that if you die while temp kos at your home station, that you be rehomed by the formula described above (instead of defaulting to corvus).

Roda, what happened to " The game should not try to make any significant provision for people this stupid."

This certainly looks like a suggestion to have the game make a significant provision. Or maybe you think it's an insignificant provision?

Instead of a complex alteration to the homing ability of players, why not just add a warning pop up that appears for anyone sub combat 2 that clicks "set home" in a corvus station? It could say something like:

WARNING: setting your home to this station is not recommended at your current XP levels. Proceed? [yes / no]

@Greenwall:

A warning message would be better than nothing at all, but a noob may not comprehend the extent of the risk, and thus, not comprehend the importance of the message.

The risks of homing in grey are compounded by the availability (or lack thereof) of ships and power cells, which in turn may depend on levels, standing, credits, and crystals.

A noob that can buy a centurion when he first arrives at corvus may die a few times, and then find he has run out of credits or crystals, and is still homed at corvus. A noob that can not buy a fast charge power cell may not understand the importance of a fast charge power cell.

Some noobs are just too stubborn, but some may just not realize the severity of the risks, and the limitation of their own resources to deal with the risks. Forcing them back to nation space let's them learn the lesson, without leaving them stuck in an inescapable position.

A pirate griefing a noob at corvus to the point the noob is forcably rehomed to nation space is a win for the pirate, and fair warning for the noob.

I've always thought homing rights and storage rights should be more restrictive. I would say that the ability to home should start at somewhere around +200 and the ability to store / cost of extra rental space should be associated with the players standing for that faction.

-10 to the station caring about finances unless that is level-restricted or free/lite-only. I am fucking Rin Ganborro and I have died twelve thousand sixty eight times. If I want to home at Corvus while flat broke, that is my decision to make.

I say ignore finances and levels entirely, and just do like Fluffy says and make it standing-dependent. You start off at disliked with Corvus already. If homing privileges kick in at +200 or so, then that would require newbies to put in the effort of raising their standing. That takes time and requires visiting the station a lot. By the time they hit +200, they should have a feel for how things work.
