You dont get it. Pirates are meant to lose. Pirates that win dont get victims.

This has NOTHING to do with pirating first of all. This is an exploit, pirate or no pirate. If you're a bounty hunter that's chasing a pirate and if the pirate knows he's about to be wasted but enters a wormhole, he can also use this exploit to his own advantage. The point is that it exists and something needs to be done about it.

Yeah, occasionally the sector does go down and you get stuck in a wormhole. If you lose your ship as a result of this "fix", that sucks. But hey, so does having to lose your connection and having some bot destroy your idle ship. It's just something you'll have to get used to. Fortunately it doesn't happen so often that it'll become a major problem.

To get on topic - the act of logging off is clearly an exploit of an unintended sideeffect of how the logoff counter interrelates with the sector loading delay.

The devs either need to include a big "logoff" button on the loading screen to make in-gate logoffs official, or ensure that invincibility count doesnt nerf the logoff count.

I have no philisophical qualm with gates being a way to safety. It has a lot of precedence in SF movies & litrature that making it to a gate / activating hyperspace means that persuit is successfully evaded.

Dropping anchor, so to speak, during wormhole travel would probably not be safe though. If you need full energy to enter a wormhole, the assumption is that you'll also need to travel at full speed over a short period of time to make it out safely. The act of logging off during wormhole travel sort of contradicts with that.

While I don't want to go too off topic here, I think the key to ensuring the safety of traders is not through wormholes, but through more balanced engines/batteries for heavier ships.

I think there are alot of different peices of the puzzle which are collectively needed to ensure that trading is profitable.

This isn't a huge worry. Get to a wormhole ought to be something like getting away anyway, but I do agree that its an exploit which would be better plugged.
