Polygon modeling is for chumps! Go g4 surface nurbs! Go StudioTools!

o.O

Yes but gmax is free and is specifically made for modding communities and game developers. You don't have to worry about converting your work to various formats each time you want to import that model into a game, for example. In fact most games on the market today use 3DS format natively. It's pretty much the industry standard right now for gaming companies.

Seeing as how Apple is starting to pursue the business of 3D modeling, having Studio Max available to Mac users will not only keep the competition up (read better and cheaper software), but will also do a huge service to Mac gamers (yes, they do exist) as well.

In conclusion, if gmax was ever made crossplatform, we'd all be making kickass models for this contest that could easily be refined and imported into the Vendetta universe (if the winner does in fact get their ship chosen).

Trust me, gmax isn't very good. I have a copy of it, and the demo of 3dsmax6 (which runs out tomorrow. :o). 3dsmax6, well, it's not perfect, but its usable. gmax is really, really bad interface and useability-wise. That's why I use blender.

Not the kind of NURB modeling I'm talking about... Have a look at the specs on Alias AutoStudio (the high end version of StudioTools), its what I learned to model with at university. Full g4 automotive surface maths and the best surface analysis tools money can buy. Beautiful. Now if only Alias would make an OSX port...

Now if only I had $5000...

Sketchup looks pretty cool and is very easy to use. It's still pretty damn expensive though for a program that doesn't exactly do any finalized work. It's basically just a way of sketching your concepts and making them fully 3D. I'd definitely get it if I had the money though, rather than carrying around a bigass sketchbook with me with wrinkled and torn pages dangling out.

Roguelazer: When I went to "http://www.roguelazer.com/vendetta_images/Contest/" there was no pictures nor folders present. Only the link back to Parent Directory. I must therefore assume it's not yet ready.
If it is ready, please tell me how to access it.

Then nobody has uploaded their files. You upload with an FTP client, and they magically appear in that directory.

Arolte, Sketchup is what i use, and as you cna see from the ship i submitted, it's quite useful. I did that in like an hour. It if could be used to filit object edges, it would the very, very powerful. Hell, it might do it, but i dont know how to use it that well yet.

However, i can insert JPGs and DWG files into the drawing in sketchup, or use them to start with, which allows me a lot of power once i start ustilizing it.

Wow, you paid for a copy of SketchUp? Hehe, busted!

=b

Where is your ship design? I don't see it? Did I miss something?

I see... not bad! Needs smoothing though.
Feb 25, 2004 Urza link
I can add in line smoothing, but with sketchup it's a bit of "line is there or not" when you smooth it. I just figured out how to remove the lines all togeather, but i think they make it easier to see.

And look at it this way. I learned how to do all this in under 2 hours. Uploading the second ship right now.

Ship #2:

http://www.geocities.com/bite_me_man_87/ship2/

So far i'm working on ideas for what it should be. The 4 weapons ports suggest a heavy fighter, but i'm interested in increasing the ship types we have. i was thinking maybe a gunboat, wide body, 4 small ports, a large port on the bottem, mediumish agility, 25000 armor?

I'll work on ship specs later, but feel free to voice your opinion as what you think it should be.

Aww, heck, I'll sign as a contestant. I thought I wouldn't be able to hold a candle, but I think I have half a chance. Nevermind that I just use Bryce. :P I gotta go find that Maya demo somewhere.....

/me gets it now.

I thought YOUR personal craft was uploaded there Rogue, not as a place to upload. In that case no problem and thanks!

Urza: I've recieved both the Zeplin and "ship 2" but I haven't copied the images of ship 2 yet because my PC is currently on the edge and liking the view. So if you can leave that up for another two or three days that would be great and then I'll pull them.
