Well, I forestalled writing this until we found out what the 500 pk medal gave us. And now we find out, the Advanced rail gun:

100 less damage then the mk III
10 less energy per shot than the mk III
longer delay...

500 player kills to get this?!

where's the incentive? cuz imho, this is the hardest medal to get in the game.

Give us a ship or a weapon that we will actually use. The rail mk III is useable. But that's it.

instead of just slightly varying the rail for each medal, why not have the pk medals work in a similar fashion as the mentor medals? with rails as bonuses for the first two, and something different for the 500 pk medal.

Cuz even in the scenario that I have overlooked the awesomeness of this advanced rail (maybe that 10 less energy actually does something cool?), this rail would be only marginally better than the rail mk III, not 400 pk's better.

was this wep just a proxy?

I agree completely, I was quite disappointed to find the Rail Gun Advanced is overall worse than the mkIII, I would of been much happier with a snazzy fighter ship, like a 3 ported vulture or a smaller and or lighter hornet. Its not like the 500pk award is a common occurence, afaik I'm the only one with it currently.

for those of you who get to these medals, what would be a good reward?

that being said, the 120-survey-missions-done reward also sucks badly. I'd like to see some sort of nice reward from Tunguska like letting you choose to be told where you can find 15 asteroids for your choice with a content of >20% of the mineral of your choice, or choose to be given choices of unique special mining ships? it would also be neat to be given choices at these events. oh, and when I say "unique", I mean "unique". a ship only you get. generate the stats on the fly if you have to, but make it worthwile. a heavy ship with 100cus of storage or so, limited boost, 1S, 3L and not a lot of armour would be a rough idea from me. sure, you could use it for trade, but it will be _slow_ and weak. on the other hand, park this baby up against a good source of ore, and sit back to watch it suck down resources like there's no tomorrow.

oh, and maybe a beam that lets you select what you want? configure it to suck in Xith on one run, and Pentric on the next? that'd be _well_ worth doing work for.

right now, I'm never going to bother with the survey missions because the beam just ain't worth it.

While on the one hand, you're all right that the badge rewards are rather disappointing, I'll voice the opinion that it's good they don't give you anything too uber. It's already hard enough to fight you, tramshed & shape, without you having an uber rail gun.

eh, you know, I was never sold on better and better weps as prizes, for exactly the reason that the best just don't need it.

However, a weapon that changes gameplay, like a beam weapon based on the wep that the lightning mines use. one with a steady stream if you can hit them, but with high drain.

Or perhaps a new ship, 1000 kg, no wep slots, 300 turbo speed, 50 drain, 75 m/s max short range speed, no cargo space. It's a scout, and a transporter, a quick way for the pilot who is clearly very experienced to get around the universe.

I agree. A cool and novel ship would be a nice reward. Something that preferably isn't going to be used for combat (like you need any help, Tramshed, you quad gauss Hornet wielding madman :-) but could be used for scouting would be great.

Hmm... I like that ship Shapenaji describes, and it actually could be very useful in CtC, until everyone got used to it. Send that in first, get all the defenders chasing it, and then the real attackers jump in & blow the transport. It would add more dynamics to figuring out who is really a threat.

This is a crazy idea that i just got while reading this thread:

What if the 500 PK prize wer a "count coo beem" ( my apologies to anyone who actualy knows how to spell, or pronounce "count coo"

Basicly the idea comes from Native American tradition. They conciderd it more honerable to touch a warior from the eneamy army with a fancy pole than to actualy kill them. A warior who could count coo was conciderd far braver than those who simply killed their enemies.

So let's say this weapon is basicly like the MK III railgun except it deals no damage but instead if you can land a certain number of hits on a single target (say 10 or 15) then it adds a mark on the target's player info something like "Player X has count coo this pilot" and increments a counter on the firing player's info that keeps track of how many times you have sucesfully count coo.

Also a player who has been count coo-ed can get the mark removed from his record by killing the player who put it there in a duel.

That no weaponed, no cargo, ultrafast little transport shape was talking sounds cool as fsck. As does that counting coup weapon. Id like to see both of those implemented for a reward, the one ship has basically no impact on the game balance not being able to hold weapons or transport cargo, and since the weapon doesnt do damage, i dont really see it being an issue either.

I would love to see that Serco light fighter. The scout ship is nice too, but I donno if I could ever get 500 kills...

It'd be really funny if the no-weapon, super fast ship fired a beam that turned the target ship glowing green for 30 seconds. It'd be hilarious. Okay, and slightly annoying, but 30 seconds isn't that long.
