What a Let Down

I just levelled up to get the valk today and what a disappointment. The prom is powerful and can blow the snot out of almost anything, the maud is an excellent all purpose ship, but the valk is like a warthog with three small ports. I've been told it got nerfed because it got abused, but really, it's SO weak.

Later tonight, someone (martin) even tried to pirate me in one. My heavy Axia Maud was able to outmanuever the valk with the exact same armament. It was a rune, weighing 3000 kg (plus 1500kg for axia posis), I was in the axia maud, 6500 kg (5000 base plus 1500 for the posis). It shouldn't have happened especially since he was more experienced and I am not really good a pvp yet.

I'm not even itani, but sheesh, these need a bit of extra manuevering ability. Get the turn ratio up or something on them. My axia bus outmanuevers it.

The valk is balanced. The only thing that makes it an easy target is it's size. It's got good armor and good maneuverability. The pilot you killed musta been a noob.

Yeah I do kinda suck. I got my revenge though :D

always nice when we admit we suck at pvp.. :D

martin, get more practice in the valk!!

Nup. I don't like them now. Stupid Valk let me down.

You know what they say... A poor workman............. :D

Edit. And I'm not a noob, I just suck at PvP.

The valk is not underpowered. It is more maneuverable than any ship besides the IBG/Orion Rev C Centurion, and packs more armor and weaponry than either of those.

Firstly - Martin's loss was not anything to do with his skill. It took forever for me to blast him to smithereens in my heavy axia maud because *I* suck at PVP. He then went on in round two to take me apart handily in a centurion (well, obviously). But in a heavy version of the maud, I shouldn't have been aable to defeat him at all - it was a lighter, well armored, supposedly more manueverable ship, but I was able to get around him every time (I just can't aim well enough for even autoaim to do it's job).

Secondly, I don't think the valk should be the most manueverable ship in the game. It has armor and weapons slots to make up for that. But it should be *more* manueverable than it currently is. It's thrust seems fine, but a little better turn ratio would make sense in my opinion. It's a light fighter but it handles like a bus.

I think that for ship balance, the ultimate ships (maud, prom, and valk) should not be the best at anything. They should be the second best at everything that they do. That means that the prom should be heavy, but not the heaviest, it should be fast, but not the fastest, etc. The valk should be fast and manueverable, but not the fastest, etc. They should be the best *all around* ships for their class. While a cent should be able to out-manuever a valk by just a little, it should be no match for it's armor, weapons, and infiniboost. And while a hog should outgun one (debatably) with it's large port, it should be no match for the valk's speed and manueverability. See what I mean?

Just like the maud is lighter and more manueverable than a centaur or atlas, it's chief competitors, it has less armor and hold than a centaur and less speed than an atlas (at least the tpg atlas). And the prom should outgun and out-armor almost everything but sacrifice manueverability and overall speed for that.

Axia positrons were your problem. Try tach3s - unless you're UIT, in which case you can't integrate with the magic Itani monk mindmeld in a Valk to use tach3s. So..

I'm sure the Valk will get some minor tweaks as incarnate works his way back down the ship spectrum. I just pray that I both have a valk and that for a brief moment in time tri-flares are possible again, and that someone else gets the same loadout and wants to duel. Tri-flare duels were soooo much fun.

starfisher,

if you and the opponent are in a tri flare valk, both have the excact same handicap, so I do not see a problem...

This is almost funny, that people think the valk is underpowered. No, wait. It's just sad.
Jan 26, 2005 Shapenaji link
Renegade, it doesn't really scale. With how heavy the valks are with 3 flares (6600), They don't really dodge much. Nothing like the dodgefests of beta.
Jan 26, 2005 Renegade ++RIP++ link
rogue it is underpowered if you compar eit with the old one, just as the prom is underpowered if you compare it with the ooold one.

Its vey hard for people to give up an advantage in anyhting... (even for me)

PS: shape sunflares at 1000 kg each, would be a bit better , not?
Jan 26, 2005 roguelazer link
Flares do not need to be reduced in mass either. I can fly a dual-flare single N3 valk and remain very competitive.

Also, the prom is not underpowered compared to the old (beta) one. It's more maneuverable than it ever was then, and is back up to 21000 armor. Likewise, the Valk is not underpowered. It is more maneuverable (unloaded) than ever, and has up to 11000 armor.
Jan 26, 2005 Shapenaji link
It's not underpowered at all, just not really my style, and a bit big for a fight against an AGT or a cent. But as a pure aggressor, triple neut 3's are just insane. Beautiful ship for attacking Convoys. Just as the prom is an Excellent ship for defending them.

Renegade: I actually don't mind the weight of the flares. It feels about right with the current balance. Sure you can't really run a triflare layout, but if you could, would you fly anything else?
Jan 26, 2005 Renegade ++RIP++ link
yes shape, because I never liked the tri setup, I am more an energy - flare guy. With 2 gausses and 1 flare or 2 tachs and 1 flare.

PS: rogue I meant the first 22k implemented prom that rocketrammed its way through anybody and anything. Not to mention that I was speaking loaded... since an unlaoded valk is good for nothing except running maybe.

cheers

Ummm, ok the Valk is *already* the most maneuverable ship in the game, and it is also hands down the *best* ship in the game. End of story.
Jan 26, 2005 Shapenaji link
eh :) I completely disagree with that statement. But that's good, cuz everyone has their own style.

Btw, SVG is REALLY good now. Imho a decent match for the IBG.

I would put these 2 and the prom as slightly better than the valk.
Jan 26, 2005 Lonestar00 link
I didn't say the valk was underpowered. I said it wasn't as manueverable as it should be. It seems so slow on turns and strafes. It should be outmanuevering almost all ships, even with a decent weaponload (since other ships are going to have weapons too). But three s-ports is certainly not underpowered, and 11,000 armor is plenty. Just a bit of a let down since it handles about like a maud.
Jan 26, 2005 Shapenaji link
well it does outmaneuver almost all ships. The only ship that outmaneuvers it, really, is the IBG, which has armor like paper.

EDIT: I believe I'm correct in surmising that the devs did figure out the rotational moments of the ships based on their distribution of mass. In that case, it may just be that owing to the valks' large distribution of mass, it takes much more torque to rotate it.
Perhaps this should be considered when balancing the smaller ships.

Ok Phaserlight: "Ummm, ok the Valk is *already* the most maneuverable ship in the game, and it is also hands down the *best* ship in the game. End of story."

The valk is not the most maneuverable ship in the game. The IBG is more maneuverable and I think the Orion Cent Rev C is more maneuverable. Also it sucks against the ibg, and orion. I don't see HOW you can consider it the best ship in the game. Even a vulture has an advantage over it, being paper thin versus bulky. The valk is too big to maneuver away from agt fire, and smaller ships. I've taken valks in just regular cents because the cent is hard to hit and it was easy for me to hit the valk with my rails.

Plus i've never lost against a valk with a prom yet (*yet, i haven't fought enough for that statement to mean anything)

p.s. (RAILS ARE THE COOLEST WEAPONS IN THE GAME)
