VO 1.8.92 - Asteroid occlusion of players on radar.

Kierky: Inc didn't mention any opposition to removing the list - he just said they aren't ready to do it yet.

Others: Let's not get stuck on the science of radar. It doesn't necessarily have to be radar waves, and the mechanics have not been finalized.

Of course this comes out the day after my sub ends and I don't have a job to pay for a new sub! This will make the my return that much more enjoyable. Keep up the good work!

This sounds fun... I don't like the idea of removing the Sector Player List log completely, but removing the names that are out of the radar names sounds like another good idea.

This is awesome.
I imagine a time when pilots deliberately head for an asteroid high in Xithricite because it maximizes radar scatter, not realizing the other pilot did a mission for Corvus that rewards an improved radar.
Maybe a missile that attaches a tracking device till their next station visit.

Ah, nice.

Any chance live seeker missiles could also lose their lock when their target is occluded?

Best. Update. Ever.

Very cool Inc, it's neat to see something that's been so oft-requested. Although I haven't tried it out yet, based on your comments I have a few thoughts.. (It's just like the old days! ;) )

1) Instead of removing someone from the sector list if they're occluded, it might be cool to just show their name but not their distance? Then you can't tell if someone is right behind that roid you're about to pass, or 7000m away. Might build a little suspense?

2) What if instead of having to hide behind a roid, you just had to get near it? This is easier to explain (as DivisionByZero mentioned earlier, "being near another large object is not unrealistic to lose ID"), and it's probably a million times easier computationally to just check distance from roids, rather than doing the intersection test.

The other advantage of that is it gives hiding folk a few more options. They could hide directly behind a roid, which gives the same effect as now, or if they're a little lazier they could just be near it. They still get to disappear on radar, but then they risk actually being seen.

Occlusion instead of proximity means that you could actually hide a fairly large number of ships on the other side of a dense asteroid belt. Could be tactically interesting...
Sep 26, 2009 smittens link
That's a good point, but if you scale the necessary proximity based on the size of the roid (IE a small one you would have to be right next to, but bigger ones give you some space to work with) I think you could achieve the same effect.

But there are definitely a few differences between occlusion and proximity based systems... with occlusion, if you aim yourself correctly, you could hide despite being thousands of meters away from the roid. But for the sake of hiding among roid fields (and in a computationally cheaper way), it seems like proximity would be better and easier.

And the miners rejoiced!

Yes!!! Love you guys :)

We're getting ever so close to VO V1.9!

Indeed, Kierky. I may just throw a party when it hits! Which, assuming the usual update every Saturday, should be November 28th. Hooray!

This calls for "hide and seek" events :3

i'm surprised at the lack of pirates complaining on this thread. lol

OMG just 108 iterations/weeks for VO 2.0!!!

Once you kill that fucking, game breaking sector list, this will officially be the very coolest thing you guys have ever done since launching VO in the first place.

Great!

I love this occlusion. I know this is only the first step but it opens up some really neat gameplay and features in the future. Here's my short list:

-Sector list gone, already been discussed, excellent next step

-Group shared radar: Nation War in the dense roids the next few weeks is going to be a bitch, but once shared radar is added it's going to rock. If on guy in your group has someone targeted, that allows everyone else to see him to.

-My favorite next step: Radar and sensor enhancing and obscuring adons. Beacons, cloaking devices, jump interdiction mines, etc all become new ways to enhance gameplay.

Someone above said he's surprised no pirates have complained about this feature. It's because it's such a huge step into a realm of much more interesting combat and expanded gameplay! BEST NEW FEATURE THIS YEAR!

God, this is just like mining.
Here's a neat phrase I picked up in philosophy class: repetition breeds self-evidence.

Now, I appreciate that it's self-evident to many of you how this change and removing the players-in-sector list is a great thing, but I really just do not see it.
Please, enlighten me. Describe for me a scenario in which these changes will benefit anyone other than people that like to mine near stations. Explain to me how this will encourage trade. Propose a situation in which anyone even remotely interested in combat will find a use for this feature.

Now, maybe I'm missing the point and the whole logic behind this move is to make the universe a friendlier place to mine in, but it seems like a lot of you think that this will actually be a plus for combat-oriented folk as well as the miners.

in response to genka,

Not showing up on radar is necessary for an ambush. Most all worm hole sectors have roid fields. I pie rat will likely be able to get much closer to the unsuspecting moth while it approaches. Granted of course, the pie rat will be just as surprised to see that moth fly by, and the roid of choice may not be on the side of the worm hole that the moth enters.

Group combat will definitely be more interesting. Everyone likes sneaking up and popping someone. And we like twitch based combat, so we are pre-disposed to enjoy things that put us on the edge of our seat; anticipation. Its kind of like watching a horror movie and that hot chick and the quarterback who are camping with the rest of the "A-crowd" posers wander off into the woods to have a sweet make-out sess. The spooky music comes on, and your waiting for any moment to have Jason pop out and smack them up. If the bad guy can be hiding behind any rock, it puts you on the edge of your seat.

Damn it, I forgot what I was going to post about now.
/me shakes his fist at genka.
