Tiling Textures

I can't seem to get the answer to this question on my other thread, so I'll ask it here:

Are we allowed to make and apply tiling texture packs to capships?

I am sorry to once again barge in on one of your precious threads with my callous manner, but I feel that this is a question that can easily be answered by just about anyone, so I feel it is my duty to beat all them other newbs to the punch:

No 1

Obviously, I am not a developer of the game, so my answer is in no way an official position, but I think it is fairly well justified by several factors:

A) VO's textures are compressed deep into the dark corners of media.rlb, and the mysterious art of unpacking that glorious file has been lost to the ages
B) Re-texturing ships to your own silly specifications might seem like harmless fun to some, but may well be construed as a dastardly cheat. Imagine trying to scan the empty sky for an out-of-range HAC. Now imagine doing the same with a neon-pink HAC.
C) None of the current crop of capships look as though they have tiled textures, and I doubt any future additions will go backwards to this antiquated technique.
D) Since the current textures aren't hideous tiles, the ability to apply such textures to ships, even if you managed to get them into the search path of the game, would depend on a re-write of the code that actually applies textures to ships. Now seems hardly a good time to ask the devs to extend more effort to provide support for doomed community projects.

[1] I took the liberty of interpreting the word "allowed" in your post to include the words "able to," since it's hardly worth asking for permission to do something you're not capable of doing.

He forgot to add some relevant context to his question. He is attempting to create and submit his own ship designs to the devs for use in the game, and wants to know whether the ships that he designs can use tiling textures. He is not asking about modifying existing ships.

I believe you, but I don't think that what you're saying is true.

He already knows about my "doomed community projects".

Terran, why don't you unpack and examine media.rlb ?

Maybe re-use some assets, as turrets visuals...

Two reasons:

1. I have NO clue what you're talking about. Is it a game asset viewer?
2. I'm on a pretty temperamental computer.

As for the URL:
I got a 404 error.

Genka's still got it. "I believe you, but I don't think that what you're saying is true." Hi-larious.

At any rate, I think he's correct - it is unlikely that we'll get into the .rlb file.

Alrighty. Seems like I've gotten my answer. Thanks guys.

Dear Genka,

I have been a long-time subscriber to your newsletter and, generally, you have extremely high quality content. I am writing you today not to insult, but to help ensure future content quality continues to set the standard for enjoyable forum posting. There was a slight error in a recent issue that I feel the need to correct- extracting texture files from media.rlb is not really a dark art that has been lost to time. Dark art, maybe, but I had a few extra goats on hand and practiced this secret technique just the other week. For you and your readers' edification, here is the specific ritual you must follow:

What you need
* Blood of a virgin bull. If this is not available, you may substitute with the blood of most any livestock.
* Dark incantations. Hachoir is what I used, but I've heard tale of other incantations that do the trick.
* Steely gaze. You will need this to stare down small demons.
* Ritual knives.

The process
1. Allow the blood to coagulate in your refrigerator for a few days. After it has formed into a solid jelly, upturn over chilled glass cutting board and carve into runes of your choice. Season to taste, move blood runes to freezer and allow them to harden, and set aside any extra chilled blood for use in step 2.
2. Place extra blood into large mixing bowl with media.rlb and knead gently until well mixed.
3. After blood runes have hardened, place in a circle around your person and coat any exposed body parts with a thin layer of the bloody media.rlb mixture. At this point, you are free to begin chanting your dark incantations.
4. While chanting, use ritual knives and your steely gaze to fend off undesirable demons. Continue chanting until media.rlb separates into binary gibberish, texture files, and various ogg media files.

And then you're done! Leftover blood makes for a great party drink, so set aside and heat up in the oven for 10 minutes at 350 degrees next time you have guests over!

In addition, if you wish to force new files into the media.rlb, you may do this with any binary diff tool and the sacrifice of a young fowl, such as duck or chicken. Simply ensure you have a smaller file than the one you wish to replace and use your binary diff tool to insert. You may then enjoy the crunchy taste of your young fowl as a victory snack.

You can unpack the media.rlb and insert your own texture files over the files that are included. You'll be the only person that can see them, but it's still possible. Manharu once skinned his ship with a tiny penis.

When I created the topic, I had been talking about using tiling textures in my ships, specifically, capitals, not for my own use.
