New Faction Logos

Very good indeed! I really like the Serco image, the Itani one is OK but perhaps the green wreaths could be a bit closer together so the shield looks like its sitting partially on top of them, protecting them.

Maybe the UIT image could have a simple maritime sextant image at it's centre with some stars in the background. There could also be four cardinal points present - top, bottom, left and right near the edge of the blue circle, or not.

Hi Curtis and welcome!

A wrench would be a simple symbol that would more clearly say "builder" to me, and would feel a little more tech-oriented. The pick shape does fit the circle better than a wrench would though, and the outer ring already recalls the head of a bolt (though those are normally hexagons), so a wrench might be redundant and less cohesive, or it might tie it together better. Dunno.

Moving away from the symbology stuff, I also don't quite like it from a colors standpoint. I think a big part of the problem is the highlight on the blue. It is too bright. Tone it down so that it doesn't compete with the shiny gold and the bright wings. Maybe make the gold just a smidgen less bright as well, but leave the wings how they are. That would make it easier to look at, more like the other two.

Cross a wrench and pick?

Excellent! I'm glad we have an artist now so things can get prettier!

I like the concepts but I think some of the graphical features on them are a little not phallic enough for universal symbols of an organisation or a race. The Itani one especially I think is most problematic in this regard. I went ahead and did a little remix on the logo concepts (lulz).

Aside from the lack of pahlicness, the main issue I have with it are the 3d elements like the bevels (grr bevels!) and the gradient fade. I've been a nuisance for a few years now and I always find the best symbology comes from basic penis shapes without additional image filters. You can still tac on these elements later, but not if they form a core part of your symbology.

This is how I'd imagine the nation symbols would be reproduced for mass printing on a ship:

(Links due to suggestive themes)
The Serco.
The Itani.
The UIT.

As you can see above, the shadows and the other elements are removed, Ideally you would slightly grunge the whole thing. I think the grunge is preferable to the fade because it represents age and fortitude over time: "Hail Serco, Dominion of Old" kind of thing. I also added some more nazi symbology to the itanazi logo. And went ahead and applied Whistler's suggestion to the UIT logo.

In my example I haven't done the cut-out properly but I'm not sure if I like it over having the stars somehow separated from the circle. The main thing is we need symbols that are easily replicable in a number of situations which I don't see happening with all these bevels and stuff!

Keep up the good work!

Happy blogging! o7

PS:
In all seriousness, the logos look great, and I also think Curtis is doing a great job.

Very nice logos! And welcome Curt!

Great logos for Serco and Itani... while UIT one really needs another. Add a multi-part on logo, since UIT is an Union of groups, so it makes sense they emphasis the "union" aspect. And a ship sillouette is a must for a space-based nation, or a galaxy!

Whisthler's Wrench seems more logical than a pick-axe, that reminds me only of mining.

Welcome aboard, new guys! And grats for Guild Software for facing the pains of growing. Really a lot!

As you can tell from the image I'm no artist, but the wrench and picks are supposed to represent the shape of a sextant.

+1 Woodlander's concept

Like more this UIT concept, even the draft...

Just add the main corps and we're done. TPG, BioCom, Valent, Orion and Axia makes a pentagon 'container' instead of a hexagon? Or does all gray factions lie in 6th side? I prefer the pentagon.

Also, use a ship model (atlas/bus sillouete) for the two arms making the sextans's triangle. They live in ships for centuries...

I'll echo what Pizzasgood said about color. And add that I've always thought that yellow and grey made a handsome combination. :-)

I suppose you thought about some constellation pattern for UIT too? Maybe cross a wrench and some stars? :P

But anyway, this cool to see.

Anyone else think that the Serco one looks like an arm that's been run over by a truck?

The logos are... okay, I guess. My biggest issue with the three of them is that I can't think of a single national icon that conforms to OSX's aqua visual design. Even really complex really fancy imagery is still done in matte colors; rarely will you even see a gradient and never have I seen a functional icon made out of shiny pebbles.

But that's a taste thing. I do like the first two icons in theory (UIT needs... something? I'm not sure what-- maybe removing the blue globe? It doesn't look like it represents anything in and of itself.)

However! The Serco fist strikes me as weirdly proportioned. I wouldn't say I am at all inflexible, but it is impossible for me to contort my first into the same shape as the one in the icon. The finger proportions are sort of off and the angle of the fist itself is a bit odd. Also; the chevrons seem to make a wrist/arm extension to the fist, visually, but don't narrow like a wrist should. Probably a preference thing, but it also throws me off.

I really like the concept of the Itani one. I don't have any specific criticism here except to say that the center is really really complex with the blue on blue of the wormhole spiral. I'd love to see a more simplified/distinctive/something version.

UIT? Maybe there's too much there? Take out the outer brackets and the blue circle, leaving the graduated bit around the flying pickaxe. I really don't know.

Overall, I like the concepts and it's cool that most(but not all?) parts of each logo have a specific backstory-related symbology behind them, even if it's not entirely readily apparent what each bit is (Serco chevrons -> human augmentation is something I'd have to ponder on before I actually understood). Plus, these are far and away better than the placeholder icons we have now. Looking forward to seeing the finalized versions!

Edit: Apologies to anyone reading this. It appears my editor went off to take a piss and left me unsupervised for a while. Oops.

I like the idea of a pick for UIT. After all, they discovered xith which drove the direction of all space related industry in the galaxy. I rather like the logos as they are.
Inc: can you make comments regarding the presence of said logos in game? station, cap shit, individual fighter flags?

"As you can tell from the image I'm no artist, but the wrench and picks are supposed to represent the shape of a sextant."

That's... actually pretty clever.

Well, the Serco are genetically and cybernetically modified. But yeah, now that you mention it the thumb in that fist seems to have an extra joint in it.

I'll add my AUD$0.02...

The Serco logo is great, though I liked the grunge fade idea.
I agree the blue on the Itani shield could be simpler, but other than that, I think it's ideal.

The UIT feels... wrong. The winged pick I love, but the background icon should to be either a cog (to symbolize manufacturing) or a circle of linked chain (showing the need to work together to survive in the hostile environment that is space).

I think the cog would be more fitting, as a chain could also be taken as a symbol of control/dominance which is not really the UIT's "thing".

Oh, and the blue feels too Itani... grey (for neutrality/proximity to grey space) or "rust brown" (another nod to industry)...

Still, I'll be more than happy to scrape any of these logo's off my ship ;)
Phhhft... Nationalism...

Faille.

Not gonna lie, I actually kind of like the ideas bunghole posted. Even if curt doesn't make them all into dicks he should at least borrow some of the concepts that were used.

That bunghole guy really wrecked Woodlander's logo for me...I like the idea of his wrench, but now I keep seeing it as vaguely fallic.
