A discussion on LUA plugins and VO...

1) Greenwall and Arf have a valid point that the lack of contextual awareness only available through plugins represents a huge gap in competitive play. In order to overcome it, one would have to be well beyond the level of a new player in terms of knowledge of keys and targeting.

2) I would disagree that VO has a massive population. I think it's moving in the right direction, but a small population is a result of point number one and the resulting lack of basic game functionality.

3) Everyone thinks their plugins are awesome. We have some very cool integrations through plugins. Hoarding your awesome implementations is not helping the game move in a positive direction as a whole.

Sorry Savet, what I said wasn't clear:

"No one can argue that VO has a massive online population..."

By this I meant it's not a valid argument because VO doesn't have a massive popluation.

"What also can't be argued, however, is that VO has a pretty significant population of people who have programming skills. "

And by this I meant that it's indisputable that VO has a pretty significant population of people who have programming skills....

4) I have a sailboat.

That's awesome. I also have a sailboat.

In other news, I agree with the notion that we should back-propagate a lot of plugin advancements into the default client (I've said as much on various suggestion threads). We would implement the changes ourselves, for performance and security reasons.

That's all I'm going to add for now, I welcome continued feedback on this.

Man, be consistent.

"We know VO has a small userbase" (ftfy)

"There are lots of people who play this game who have some amount of programming skill" (ftfy2)

"We did steal them, they aren't any better than those written by other players."

Who's arrogant now! You couldn't possibly have stolen them because they only exist on my computer buddy. It's one thing to be arrogant, its another to be arrogant AND technically illiterate. These aren't the kind of plugins you just share and give to everyone, these are the kind that steal your information from the client and publish it to a select group of people.

This is why I get to read your lovely sunday meetings every week. You tell me if that's an advantage or not. I certainly have found it advantageous.

Glad to see our subscription dollars being put to good use.

You idiot TRS, Inc already had a sailboat.

(I knew that, now let me rock it around a bit for funsies)

Also, why would you assume I was being sarcastic, I love savet's boat, I hope inc's boat is just like savet's boat. I would ride on that boat! Boats are AWESOME!

Does yours have a pirate flag too incarnate? Be honest.

Wait! I don't have any bloody plugins! I think I loaded someone's enterleave plugin or something, but otherwise I am plugin free. Are you telling me that I got 7k+ player kills despite the incredible advantages that plugins provide?

Wait! What advantages? I didn't see any specific advantages listed? What kind of advantages are we talking about? Are we talking about theoretical, imaginary, vaporware type advantages, or actual ingame, pvp, advantages? Are you trying to tell me that if I log in and get in a cormaud, I won't be able to kill anyone because of the awesome advantages of plugins that I don't use?

I see a lot of claims being made, but not much to back it up. I bet I still do not need any plugins, and I bet I still kick your ass.

Maybe we can setup a duel in imaginary land! It'll be great; just you, me and a pink elephant named toto!

I also tend to not use any plugins, except for enterleave and parts of TCS, the only advantage it gives is auto follow, which can be done without Lua as I used to do it with a bash script.

Inc's boat is likely bigger than my boat....probably very centaur like. Mine is just a little 25 footer. But it looks great with conceptual cannons photoshopped onto it.

My boat is largely theoretical. I got an amazing price on it a few years ago Craigslist, and since then it has been this idealistic concept in my yard that's really more like a 23-foot fiberglass treehouse. I spend all of my time elsewhere (like, here) so I have not been able to get it together and in the water yet :(. Someday..

Thats okay, I usually only rock the proverbial boats anyway :P

Is this your way of saying you think this thread is shit, Incarnate? This isn't about sailboats.

Greenwall, lay off whatever drugs you're on. You're blowing this whole plugin thing way out of proportion.

Greenwall: No, I've already said we will back-propagate common plugin features into the game. I think that was one of the larger overall points of your post. I don't have much more to add.

Perhaps it would be better, at this point, to make a new Suggestions thread that enumerates and describes the specific plugin features that should be propagated into production, and links each plugin that demonstrates them. Then when we have some free development cycles, we can look at the generally desired goal and see about re-implementing that ourselves.
