VO is an MMORPG!

A Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game

Much has been done to make role play possible in this game!

1. A lengthy and detailed backstory
2. Choose from 3 nations, each with advantages and disadvantages
3. Build up to 5 characters on one account, each with different nations or personality
4. Create or join a player guild with its own theme and back story
5. Customize your ships colors
6. Build a massive capital ship to carry all your friends

Please respect the role play of others!

The following things damage the role play of others and take a way from the general fun for role players:

1. Do not deliberately expose the alternate characters of a player in the general chat. Players have a right to have different characters with different personalities/stories and game play.
2. Do not mock or trash talk new guilds in their infancy. It takes time and effort to create a guild and every player deserves a chance to have a guild with some longevity.
3. Do not call other players dumb or other names because they are trying to role play.
4. Do not deliberately try to sabatoge a pilot's role play just because you think it's silly.

These are just suggestions from a long time player of VO. I decided to post this here because I have noticed that lately there have been some who have forgotten that VO is an RPG or choose to be destructive openly to the role play of others. I personally consider this list of "do nots" to be toxic behaviors that are damaging to the VO community.

Please remember that VO is an MMORPG!

An alt stops being an "alt" the moment the alt starts to annoy or otherwise agitate players by being toxic in 100, players can't tell others "it's just my alt RPing" when their RP is just pissing others off.

IronLord, toxic behavior is toxic behavior... and it is explicitly forbidden by the developers of VO.

That being said, it is still the right of all players to have alternate characters with different play styles and personalities. One may be offensive (pirate, gangsta, murderer).. the other may be admirable (trader, miner, manufacturer).. another may be an RP bigot (nationalist, faction loyalist). None of them should be toxic.

Finally if they are being "toxic".. that is an issue for that player to work out with the moderator you reported him/her too. It is never your duty or responsibility to expose that character in public chat, lest you yourself become the "toxic" player.

Reference for the establishment of this right, please?

This is the intended nature of the game as evidenced on the front page of vendetta-online.com

"Vendetta Online is a 3D space combat MMORPG for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS, as well as the Oculus Rift. This MMO permits thousands of players to interact as the pilots of spaceships in a vast universe. Users may build their characters in any direction they desire, becoming rich captains of industry, military heroes, or outlaws."

Obstructing users from "building their characters in any direction they desire" would remove the "RPG" from "MMORPG" and circumvent much of the game features put in place by developers.

"role playing" by definition is pretending to be some person/character that you are not.

1.6 of the Play Nice policy section of the Vendetta Online Rules of Conduct explicitly states:

"Role-playing" does not grant license to violate these rules.

Though Vendetta Online is a Role-playing game, the claim of "Role-play" will not be accepted in defense of any of the anti-social behaviors mentioned above. We strongly encourage role-playing, but cannot allow it to be done at the expense of others.

I don't know anything about the context of this discussion. But, basically, the (quite) simplified expectation of chat behaviour, particularly on 100, is to "be respectful to other players". Deviations from this, that go too far afield, get reported via the /report system.

Outing of alts is not something that is against the rules. But, being genuinely unpleasant in chat actually is against the rules.

We've had a number of people in the past who have claimed "Oh, I'm not being (offensive|bigoted|whatever), that's just my role play", and like the RoC policy says, that doesn't make it okay.

So.. again, it's very difficult for me to comment on a situation I know nothing about, but I agree with aspects of both "sides" here:

1) "Role playing" is not an excuse for toxic chat behaviour.

2) Players should use the /report system to deal with inappropriate or toxic chat conduct, not attempt to self-enforce by retaliating in-kind, or escalating things (alt outing, whatever).

If players try self-enforcing, that just results in further escalation, we've seen this before and it's unpleasant.

- If something rises to the level of toxic chat behaviour, you have "/report".
- If something is just annoying (to you) and not genuinely toxic or abusive, you have "/ignore".

Choose appropriately.

Thank you for the clarification, incarnate. What haxmeisters been saying is that you don't tolerate outing alts and it's against the rules. Appreciate you coming in

Thank you for the clarification, incarnate. What haxmeisters been saying is that you don't tolerate outing alts and it's against the rules. Appreciate you coming in

The reason why we don't have a rule against outing alts, is because the outing of the alt is up to the individual player.

The best way to keep a secret, is not to tell anyone.

If you simply make an alt, and play it as a true newbie, and are genuinely careful about appearing new and your usage of speech patterns and such, then no one will know it is you.

But, if you tell certain people, and they then tell other people (or you simply play as a pretty "obvious" alt), well, that's not really on us. We are not the "alt police".

Now, that all being said, I do agree in principle with these other concepts, that haxmeister posted:

Basically, the idea of "be respectful to other players" is fairly obviously synonymous with "don't be a dick".

Although some vets find the new "/report" system to be "overbearing" or "excessive" or whatever, the truth is.. we try not to be, and are always looking for some consistent, reasonable middle ground of enforcement. However, some vets are pretty normalized to being dicks, quite frankly, which is where the conflict emerges when you tell them "hey, stop being a dick".

So, again, if someone is genuinely doing something that rises to the level of toxic abuse, then the "/report" system should be used.

If it does not rise to that level, then "/ignore" should be used.

But we don't really need rules that are specific around people role-playing or creating guilds, because the "be respectful to other players" concept already covers that. I don't have to enumerate every single possible case in which someone could be a dick, that would be silly.

Our website's front page says: "Vendetta Online is a 3D space combat MMORPG".

The concept of an "MMOSCS" (a term I've never heard of), is pretty limiting; it implies there isn't anything other than space combat. Like, say, trading, manufacturing, mining, etc.

And trading, manufacturing, (except for mining) is fun
Jun 02, 2021 Moonzy link
Just had to mention it. Mining is really boring, I agree.

Extensive use of discord has made genuine role play more difficult. It adds a lot of complexity to anonymity.

If you tell everyone your alts. And then go on one of them and just be a straight up douche (friendly language). No one is gonna respect your desire.
Jun 05, 2021 haxmeister link
I've been playing this game since 2008 IronLord.. I think I know how it works. The question is why do YOU keep going on and on about people acting like douches? This has nothing to do with that.
Jun 05, 2021 IronLord link
I don't care how long you've played. You made post after threatening to tell incarnate that I was exposing your alt because of how toxic you were being. Then the next day or so afterwards you make this post? It isn't a coincidence. You knew I'd see this so you did this to get a rise out of me. For someone whos been around since 2008 you remind me of some of these newer pompous players. I suggest this thread just be locked because nothing good is going to come from it.

At the very least, it seems like the original purpose has been served, and I've clarified the game policies.
