How Many and on What Platform ?

Jan 05, 2023 mike365smith link
I would love to know If the number of posts in forums is reflective of the number of people playing on that platform ?

Windows 13%
MacOS X 30%
Linux 37%

Android 16%
iOS 2%
VR 1%

I don't think Linux users would be that high, or Mac users.
It would be great if we could show Active Player - by Platform ?

Hi Mike

The ratio is not at all reflective. Many people never post in the platform-specific forums. As you can see, there is not much activity.

My experience in game is that many are on mobile these days. ..but the game has a native Linux client that doesn't require steam and that is rare. So Linux users would likely show a higher percentage than you would expect to see. Also the LUA API for plugins plays well into the hobbies of Linux users. I use Linux, and many other players I'm acquainted with do as well...and they probably represent the highest percentage of plugin writers.

@Whistler - Thanks - are you PC or Android Mobile ?
@haxmeister Thanks for the info. - Are you also a Plug-in Author ?

@VO_Developers - I would be very interested to see - how many people or at least what % - play on what platform(s) ?

Hi Mike

I usually play on PC.

After reading this: https://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/37508 please put your suggestions in the Suggestions forum.

@haxmeister

I'm new here - I have spent as much time reading the Forums as I have playing the game.

I understand Plug-Ins are a proof of concept - for new idea's for the game.

Some of which can be later incorporated into the game.

Can I ask - how many Plugins have you authored ?
have any been incorporated into the game ?

I'm curious - thanks !!

Maybe we can work on something together ?

@mike365smith

I have always reached out to plugin writers to join forces and write something awesome together. I have some proficiency in a few languages like Perl, Lua, PHP, Scheme, bash, SQL etc.. but prefer to do most in Perl and Lua (I don't really like VO lua due to it's restrictions). The other plugin writers don't know how to write code as a team. They don't know how to use GIT, and they don't know how to write modular code generally. They don't document their code properly and they don't have the patience to explain what they have written most of the time. These factors make it difficult to properly collaborate on anything at all. Most of the time it's just "hey look at this code and tell me what you think" or some other somewhat detached interaction.

The plugins I write have mostly been private plugins for people or guilds that wanted some specific functionality. However, my real goals are to write things that open up the plugin development world to more people. The plugin system is crude and crippled and it really has to be due to cross platform constraints and other safety factors. I did however write some things that are open source and available to anyone like the re-write of the TCP layer that provides more callbacks than the old one and an OO like interface.

you can check the TCP library here

I also wrote a simple server for Luxen's TeamDX client.. but it just didn't catch on..

Other projects include flyboy server and client for ITO guild.. and a complete re-write of the venerable Voce plugin used by some pirates, it is now called Skynet and has a completely re-written server and plugin that provide more detailed user permissions systems and security. I've written plugins that do all sorts of silly things.

My current project is Skynet2 which will be another re-write of Skynet but will make it capable of managing multiple guilds. This edition is completely open sourced and you can see my progress on the server here . It is enormous amount of work for a hobbyist to write such a server and client in my free time. However, I do enjoy it and have since I was very young. This plugin hopes to try and unify some communications and community stuff. All things incarnate would prefer I not make plugins to do.. but the heavy lifting will be done by the server... and should be able to create some degree of connection between Discord, the VO Forums.. etc..In my view, VO connectivity to the outside world is very dated.

The samsung laucher provides details of players using samsung devices, that tho is only 1 factor. If vo went to steam then u could see way more, ie hardware used active rn etcetc

@haxmeister
Very interesting. - Gives me a lot to think about, I'll get back to you. ( Probably inside the PCC Forum. )

@Anewold - thanks for the feedback.

The samsung laucher provides details of players using samsung devices, that tho is only 1 factor.

Based on what I have seen, the Samsung launcher does not provide a meaningful statistic of anything. This is because not all Samsung devices appear to report their stats, and probably not all regions (there are varied legalities over this), and seemingly not all OS-versions. So, it's kind of a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of.. "something".

The Samsung launcher is basically intended as a social-media app, a way of connecting players to other people playing Fortnite (or whatever), on Samsung phones, to create a Samsung-specific community (which can then be further monetized and activated by Samsung). I don't think it was ever intended to show any kind of accurate statistics, even of people on Samsung devices.

It is enormous amount of work for a hobbyist to write such a server and client in my free time. However, I do enjoy it and have since I was very young. This plugin hopes to try and unify some communications and community stuff. All things incarnate would prefer I not make plugins to do.. but the heavy lifting will be done by the server... and should be able to create some degree of connection between Discord, the VO Forums.. etc..

I honestly have no idea what it is you want to do, as you've only been very vague across a variety of different threads, about creating something to "unify some communications and community stuff". I've asked you for detailed specifics, several times, and you've declined.

But, I can say that putting "an enormous amount of work" into something that you think I won't like, is probably a poor investment of your time?

We have our own internal goals around social-media and external data integration. It's a complex set of issues, that directly impacts the game's representation on social media, management of our community, and ties into the mechanics of new user acquisition (marketing).

At the end of the day, we're operating a business here, we aren't going to leave fundamental functionality of these systems up to random plugin developers, any more than we would our billing systems.

And, regardless of whether it's perceived as "very dated", there's likely a reason why Blizzard doesn't yet offer full Discord+guild integration either.

Sometimes, just elevating comm-feature goals and ideas on Suggestions is a far better path forward; particularly better than asking for broad APIs, so you can develop something you think I specifically don't want.

The functionality and operation of any plugin in the game client is a privilege, not a right.
