uh-oh, Ray's confused.

:P

Really, I don't think we should care too much about the background, as long as you guys keep pumping out awesome gameplay. I've got an idea: Don't check the website for the next few weeks until you get the new universe out.

Unless you're still trying to get new ideas...

Ray, I think a1 said that was still inplace because someone went out so far that the server failed and shorted the sector out. (I think that was what he said, have to ask him)

Now the server just autokicks you off (according to multiple testers) and resets you back on the sector's station.

Pyroman, the first instance of which you speak took place a long time ago. read about it in the Vendetta chronicle. So the real number is in the article, unless it was changed...

Skybox limit found!
Rahcned crashes sector 3!
Written by SiliconGold2 of the Gold nation

In the evening of December 10th 2002, Rahcned was having some fun in Sector 3, foolin around, spinning everywhere. Little did he realize he was about to discover the greatest thing sinc frozen food.
He was rapidly moving his ship in circles, when suddenly his ship was flung out of control, and started spinning extremely rapidly. He had no control as his ship tumbled and rolled around. As it turns out he had rediscovered an old bug that was thought to have been fixed long ago.
At that point SiliconGold2 entered the system and observed Rahcned. In play fun he decided to warp into him, but once his ship struck Rahcned’s hull, Rahcned went flying into space at speeds of up to 2000m per second. The fastest ever achieved. Then Silicon and Mage ( who had also entered the system ) began a search for their lost comrade. Soon they found him, and bumped him again to see what would happen. This time he went at speeds of over 3000m per second. Clearly this was a great opertunity to explore the vast regions of space, and so that’s what Silicon decided to do.
After searching again for a while, they again found him. Bumped him again, and he again went flying into open space. This time farther then ever. After another long, weary search they located Rahcned. And this time, Silicon was going to put this to good use.
Silicon pointed his ship right at Rahcned, and prepared to blast him off into space. The plan was that once Silicon had rammed him, Rahcned would lock his speed so he would travel, like, really fast d00d.
Silicon’s engines suddenly blasted, and he went flying into Rahcned. Rahcned was as the last times flung away. And Rahcned locked the speed. Then Rahcneds face stared in disbelief at his console. He was traveling at a speed of 6119m per second!
After around an hour and 45 minutes, he went so far that he crashed sector 3. a1k0n had to cut him off from the game to fix it.
After some careful calculations, Silicon found out that the impossible had been achievied! Rahcned (who also plays as Scorcher) had reached the skybox! He at traveled 49,802,541 meters (that’s 49,802km!) in an hour and a half! The farthest anyone else had gone was 1,000km in 8 hours! A truely amazing feet!
Now that the skybox has been discovered, what else is there to? Will exploration and discovery take a back seat to fun and killing? Or will new things to conquer or explore come up in the future? All I can say is, is that we’ll be ready to boldly go where no man has gone before.

To clarify: the "limit" reached back then was the server's ability to track a ship and its relationship to other objects in the same sector after it had travelled into the extremes of floating-pointedness. The skybox has no limit to us because it is always centered around the ship of whoever is viewing it. It's like one of those plastic spheres people put their hamsters in (so they can pee in it and spread it all over the house). You can run as far as you like, but you are still inside. Having said that, I'll add that trying to compare the way sectors work to the way we understand the physical world is problematic.

I thought the sectors in this game would be about the same size of the sectors that were in the test.
Jun 21, 2004 RelayeR link
"Size" is irrelevant. As FM said, you are always in the center of the area called "skybox".

It gets truely wierd when you comprehend that someone 15km away from you is also in the center of their skybox.

No, he was talking about skyboxes. The octree of the sector would be its actual size, and the octree is infinite. Therefore, you have an actual position in the sector, but the "view" (the skybox) is always centered around you. The octree is a three-dimensional array of cubes used to determine your phyiscal location, and it expands based on how far apart people are.

So, to answer your example, both you and the person 15km away are in the center of your own skyboxes. However, it is highly likely that neither of you are in the center of the sector's actual octree.

I stand corrected and have edited to reflect.

What if you left your ship sitting there and flew the little camera way way out, if you went far enough, would the skybox litteraly swallow your ship?

Also, i remember that pic!! it was an unused warpgate idea.
Jun 22, 2004 Forum Moderator link
No, the skybox would center on the camera. I guess it would have been better to say that it is always centered on your view. Remember that the skybox is just a collection of images to look at. It has no appreciable "physical" properties in the Vendetta universe. It is not possible to get closer or farther away from it.
