Where's the hangout? (More Newbie Questions)

Jan 24, 2005 Splendid_Killer link
Anyone who has played Escape Velocity knows that it owned. VO is EV(O) on steroids, yet my interaction with any other peeps has been completely limited to Mentor offers. Maybe I should take someone up on it (there again, I did finally get past the Level 3 combat rating hump). What I would like to see is a FAQ related to 'what's next'.

VO just seems like a MMORPG without the 'multiplayer' bit. Where's everyone hangoing out at?

Sedina B-8!

Other than that (and once you get pass this initial joke), there haven't been much "hangouts" per say.

Space, is big. So mindbogingly big, you just wouldn't beleive it. [etc]

I've been playing for about two months now and the most people I saw (myself) online at once is 100 (just a couple of days ago, but I dont monitor 24h so this might not be even close to the max VO has seen in the same period).

So, try spreading 100 players in a universe as big as Vendetta. It's not enough to even fill a single sector with one person per quadrant.

So, yeah, hangouts are the com channels. Your guild. And your buddies you find along the way.

And the occasional CtC big events. I've seen 20-some players involved in CtC once. It was a blast. Even if it did cost me a few ships...

unless your actively trying to get into groups you probably will not see to many other players other then in passing in grey space or along the Capture the Cargo routes. Try asking someone if they are looking for a partner in what they are doing, you might be suprized and find yourself in a cargo run that makes you a pretty penny or two! ;)

I've seen alot of people hang in Dau K 10. But if you really want to meet more people you'll have to most likly fight with/along side them. (i.e. at Sedina B 8)

It's also ridiculously easy to fly through a sector full of players and not even know they are there.

I've said this before, but lots of sectors/systems seems like a good thing, but it isn't.
Jan 24, 2005 wylfing link
I really, really agree that there are too many sectors. Something like two powers of sectors fewer would be better (i.e., 64 rather than 256). And radial :)
Jan 24, 2005 Bobsin link
the extra sectors is not the problem. i have been playing since september and have not seen but a small fraction of them. how often do people travel through each and every sector? having less sectors will only achieve one thing... less places to hunt bots. player interaction will be found along trade routes, worm holes, and of course my home.. sedina b-8. :D

capture the cargo is a great way to meet people, a lot of my friends were found doing ctc.

anyway, see ya in game :)

Less system/sector...? Dont you mean more players?

But yeah usually a number of players in Sedina B-8. Read the FAQ on CtC if you would like to get involved in larger scale battles. It's also good to join a guild in order to meet people, and also for assistance and mentoring through the game.

Edit: There you go wylfing, i'm really sorry and it wont happen again... :P

I believe you mean fewer sectors.

The Friendly Neighborhood Grammar Nazi

Bobsin, your suggestion that things would get overcrowded is goofy. I'd conservatively estimate there are 1500 bot-infested sectors in the game right now. If the number of sectors is slashed by 75%, and the number of players triples, we're still talking about more than one sector per player. And that assumes 100% of people are out hunting bots at the same time.

I don't know if you've noticed, but when there are two, three, or even four other people in the same sector shooting bots, there's still never a shortage of bots to kill.

Infinite_Skillz: no one is advocating fewer systems. Yes, more players is good, but the amount of vacant space in VO right now is staggering, and even with ten times as many players would still seem empty.

there are too many guilds. (99% of the guilds in game are all nations so players cant team/meeting... all this guilds are just a channel tchat) (they use already the channel 100 so i wonder why they needed to join/make a guild all nations)

for when a nation guild? where everyone work in team, meeting...

need a true nation channel lik group/guild channel instead of the current channel 11.

I've been working on a freelancer mod that reduces the number of systems to 3 main ones and 1 n00b training ground. The systems are big, but you can still fly around without encountering other players when there are 20+ people online. Compacting it this small has dramatically increased player interaction and has resulted in a large increase in players grouping for missions/trade. I wouldn't advocate such a dramatic decrease, but I think starting small would actually improve gameplay and player interaction. After all, without player interaction it might as well be a single player game.

New systems could be added later if the player base gets that large.

I hear in the early days, one of the beta versions had many fewer systems. For those that were here then, I'd like to ask them "Is the amount of player interaction higher or lower than it is now?"

About the same. (for me)

25 sectors wasn't a lot of space, but then we only had about 1/5 the number of players currently online now at that time.

I run into a lot of people ingame, and I usually greet them with a "hiya" or "hello" in sector chat.

I disagree with most of the comments. You can actively seek out players to fight or group. But the thing I love is that I can play solo, do some good cargo missions through enemy territory and risk my neck to bring it back home. I love that, but I do seek out my friends if going on a dangerous mission. Space should NOT be small.
Jan 25, 2005 Renegade ++RIP++ link
and well lets say it honestly celkan,

if you happened to trade during the peeks in that 25 sectors universe, imagine to run into a different pirate every sector (if not followed by the previous one as a starter). Makinf trading in anything but a marauder a hard thing to do.

Anyway, I like the vastness of space, but it would be cooler if all the space is actually used for something, either botting or searching for npcs or using it as special missionspace where if you do a certain mission you get requested to go to sedina x9, where normally is nothing but now spawns a npc that tells you to bring him some part of some bots which spawn in for instance itan x8 and eo y5 once you enter the sector. Then you backtrack back and you get some nifty advantage or see another part of the storylineadvancing. Or a mission that orders you to explore parts of a couple of systems to find a warphole bringing you and you alone from for instance sedina x9 to eo a8. Or opening up to some special sectors like before.

But like other people stated, maybe it is best to start the map a bit smaller and make the rest of these sectors or systems only available once you have explored that region by by accident coming across a little hint during one of your botkills(special item drops revealing warp x9sedina to unchatered system) or one of your trademissions or by doing some special exploring quests.

But these are just ramblings, so pay no attention to it

If trading were dangerous there would be a reason to hire other players as escort pilots. Right now there really isn't any risk to it... at least none that I've encountered.

What's the worst that can happen? You lose your ship and cargo... that's just money and is easily replaced. Now if you lost license xp or something with every death, there would be more incentive.

Edit: Heh, Furious just posted in Suggestions, moving my response there...

what about making death penalties for circumstances. Example would be if killed in PvP, the XP loss is small, but if killed by a low level bot because you werent watching your tail, more XP loss. Kind of loss per level per enemy.
