Optimizing a DSL connection for use with personal web sharing in OS X

Vendetta should be the home of a fair number of more-or-less genius mac users. I've a question for you:

I've recently begun to play around with personal web sharing as a means of sharing files with my friends [as opposed to using MSNs crappy file sharing protocol, and fer those of my friends who get nervous when directed to a ftp url ;-)]. However, when someone downloads from me, they only seem to be using a small percentage of my full uploading capacity. Usually, they get 20-50k/s, which is less than a tenth of my full uploading capacity. I've tried to change my upload buffer and settings by using System Optimizer X, but with no difference.

What I'm wondering is if there are any ways to dig into the unix config files, and optimize my upload buffer and connection for use with personal web sharing (well, for any kinds of uploading, really), to allow me to use my full uploading capacity? I recall reading something about built-in network caps and bottlenecks in mac os that could be removed, and I'm hoping this is one of them...

Thanks fer yer help. Solve this problem, and I promise you that when I become a prominent pirate and PvPer (probably only another five or ten years away from now), I will give you one free get-away card. Of course, by then, you'll have become even better, and will be able to rout me easily, meaning you'll have to stop playing vendetta for some time to really make use of my offer... :-P

Should help some.

EDIT: Whoos. I don't know if that'll help with upload speeds. Your upload speed is more than likely capped by your ISP, and there is nothing that you can do about that.

This would be better if posted in the Mac OSX forum. I'll move it once I know you've seen this.

Yeah, Macguy is right, most DSL lines have larger download than upload, for instance, my DSL line has a 3000kb download rate, but only a 512kb upload rate, its controled by your cable modem, theres not much you can do to increase it.

My line is 3000 down / 768 up. A while back I was having trouble where my upload speeds were fine, but my download was less than 1/10 what it was supposed to be (100 - 300). Turned out my network cable I had plugged into the modem was the culprit, replacing it got me working normally again.

Also note that the line capability is typically shown in bits-per-second, while most download software shows the speed in bytes-per-second, so where you said your friends usually were getting 20-50k/s, that's probably kilobytes, which translates to 160-400 kilobits per second, which is pretty decent upload on DSL.

There's several websites with speed tests you can run to get an idea of how your line's actual performance compares with the rating your provider says it is. http://www.dslreports.com/stest is my personal preference.
