'loading' screen quotes are terrifically out of date

'the hive bots have literally transformed the mining industry into a scavenging industry' ...

no.. it hasnt. nobody in their right mind would get ore from bots. bots dont have any good ore, and they dont carry very much of it.

--

i cant think of the other ones that are erroneous but they are definitely there. by the way, on some computers the screens load way too fast for anyone to read that stuff anyway.

It would be nice if the dev's posted a full list of the "tips". Or has any obsessive compulsive pilots done this themselves?
Feb 20, 2005 macguy link
He's stating an opion. I agree with the stuff loading way too fast to read, but yet again, do you really want it to load slower? I think it used to, but not anymore.
Feb 20, 2005 Starfisher link
Well I agree that the loading screen is a bit out of date. They should probably put up a nice render of the universe map with some nifty "Wormhole Tranlsation Progress" bar or something at the bottom instead of "Loading..."

But of all the things to put in bugs... I mean this is one of those "so low priority no one cares" type things.
Feb 20, 2005 tramshed link
The things loading too fast are due to your computer being of a reasonable amount of power. While its annoying that you only get to read one word a screen, I would really not like to see some type of intentional delay put in there. Maybe just make all those tips accessible from the station menu or the likes.

if a newbie gets this game, boots it up, and starts reading that stuff, they are going to be in trouble.

they might think stuff like 'oh ok, screw mining, im gonna go scavenge'. its basically giving absolutely false information to players, which affects n00bs a lot. it makes them not trust the game and ignore other things the game tries to tell them. it is frustrating for them.

another bad message is that 'pirates hang out in ion storms'. no, they dont. they hang out at wormholes.

of course i know many of you people would be happy if no more n00bs ever came, ever. but i for one, think n00b considerations are very high priority.

Sounds like it's time to make a tips update. If you're serious about it, make a thread with a set of tips, and others can add on to it.

Rude comments editted or deleted. There has been a recent trend of increased rudeness in the forums. It will stop. Should that be a tip?
Feb 20, 2005 Fnugget link
I really didn't realize my apparent rudeness. At first I thought someone went on a frenzy like the FCC on speed, but maybe there is and we're desensitized to it? Anyway, me and ananzi are like opposite polarities and despite what you learned about magnetism, they DON'T attract.

fnugget is actually one of the least rude players.
Feb 20, 2005 sarahanne link
actually I have the tips listed in my FAQ thead in the general forums if you want to look at them.
When the wiki came out I got the impression that many started ignoring me..... and my stuff....
Feb 21, 2005 Celkan link
We're not ignoring you.

The faq is easier to read on the wiki than it is on the forum.
Feb 21, 2005 sarahanne link
Did you see the web page version? I actually have several different pages with an FAQ and a Strategy Guide and some other things that I have been collecting.
Feb 21, 2005 Celkan link
We link to Ray's guide from the wiki, but I was unaware you had made a website-ish FAQ. The wiki is going to become a big encyclopedia anyway, so why not incorporate everything into it?
Feb 21, 2005 sarahanne link
Actually you've supported my point. You haven't paid attention to my stuff.

But this is veering off topic.

If anyone wants to see a list of the loading screen tips I have them in the general forum in a sticky thread.

Ananzi, you troll...

"Most buttons have keyboard shortcuts. Use them for quick menu navigation."

-- many of the keyboard shortcuts dont work, work inconsistently, or are labeled incorrectly. (Errm, what are you on?)

"Different factions will offer you different missions at different stations. Keep your eyes open as you explore the universe."

--not that i have ever seen. all the missions are basically the same everywhere. then again i have never gotten past the 'chemical bot' mission. (Well, ok, very few stations, but a serco can goto a geria rutilus station and take a border patrol mission, a serco with 8 combat can goto a serco capitol station and tae the level 8 assasination mission, plus the fact that the mission system isnt complete...)

"Different missions become available for players who are members of a group. Type /group for more info."

--the only mission presented to you in station when you are in a group is a combat mission, and it is the exact same mission you get when you are solo, except you have to kill twice as many bots for the same benefit. (Well, the mission structure is still being worked on, not relivant now, but it should be soon...)

"Attacking a player in monitored space may lead to a severe faction standing decrease."

--you have to kill them. attacking them does nothing. (Did you read it? it says May lead, not will lead, troll)

"Stations pay the most money for items they don't produce. However, certain basic goods (like ores) are traded openly, and can yield a consistent profit."

--ores are just about the most worthless trade item in the game, other than water and food. especially now that there is mining. and i have never seen a 'consitent profit' from the plain ore sold at station. the price seems to vary relatively randomly with little pattern. maybe im missing something. but nobody trades in basic goods and makes a consistent profit, let alone a decent profit. do they? (No, but its still true that ore prices are bottomed, so will lead to a consistant profit, where all the higher good rices are subject to change, ie, one day you ma make a high profit, but the price dropped, next day you have to find a new buyer...)

"Friendly pilots appear green on your radar. Pilots that are potentially hostile are marked in red. Be careful who you shoot!"

--you can get killed easily by a 'green' on your radar, it has happened to me many times. (This is the radar colour systems fault, i kind of agree this ones flakey, not all green dots are friends, not all red dots are enemy)

"Joining a group mid-mission may cause the mission's objectives to change."

--if it is anything besides a combat mission, joining a group mid-mission will cancel the mission and you will lose all progress you had made in it. i am not sure but i think you might also lose standing. (yes, like quitting a mission, but as stated the mission system isnt finished.)

"You cannot be damaged by other members of your nation, unless one of them falls into bad standing."

--mines will hurt anyone regardless of nation (wrong, mines do have friendly fire, unless dropped my a hated member of your nation...)

Standard "Global Chat" is in channel 100. Type "/join 100", and use "T" to talk.

--'T' is for sector chat, 't' is for 'global chat' (only + point you get)

[edit-sarahanne] [ Waylon fixed this when the new key binds were added, this is an old list, Sorry Ananzi, no point]

"The rogue AI hives are a constant nuisance for travelers. However, they've literally transformed the mining industry into a scavenging industry, as collector bots make easy prey."

--nobody gets ore by killing bots. bots mine crap ore
and they dont carry very much. even a queen only carries about 14 ore, about the same as a bus. (i actulaay, as a low level char, would collect the ore, as you have to get your first cash somewhere, dont judge everyone by your own standards)

"Most stations have a no-fire zone around them. If you attack another player within this space, the station's defenses will come to their aid."

--all stations have a no-fire zone around them. (Again, valid point, at time of writing, corvus station had no no fire zones, hope to be like that soon)

"AI hive queens are particularly adept at scavenging technology and integrating it into their own designs. Thus, while the queens cannot design new armaments, they've borrowed from 200 years of human innovation."

--then why do bots have more advanced guns, better batteries, and vastly more armor than we do? (Errm, they use better guns than we do? Since when, they use the same guns we do)

So your bored, ok there are one or two hints that were confusing, or out of date, but seriosly ananzi, the mission system isnt even finished, some of these hints were added in anticipation of more... and sometimes it can be the little things that make a difference, but seriously, what bot has a better gun that we do? even the queen uses AGT... =p anyways, imho this thread is a waste of time till the next few design goals have been achived, you could change them all now, just for them to be irrelivant again in 3 months...
Feb 22, 2005 mr_spuck link
Scavaging is actually a great way to get past the first trading levels (without trading much :P)

1. take basic combat
2. blow up bots/transports and collect ore
3. dump ore in mining station
4. *more botting and collecting*
5. take mining mission and use ore in station

(needs a bit of luck with the miningmission but worked pretty well last time I leveled up a char)

If I recall correctly the Apu 5 uses flechette guns. It just uses it better than many players. :)

~~You're a UIT player. Itani and Serco group players can access a border patrol mission last I heard.

~~This refers not to YOUR mission, but to the GROUP's mission.
