Specifying Quantities of Cargo to Load/Unload/Sell at Stations (Important!)

May 14, 2005 DekuDekuplex Ornitier link
Today, I had a rather inconvenient experience in trying to check prices because of a lack of functionality for specifying quantities of cargo to load/unload/sell at stations.

Specificially, I was at Dau L-11, bound for Odia M-14, with a Behemoth, intent on checking prices on as many profitable items as possible while completing the second leg of a trading guild bulk procurement mission.

First, I checked the Trade Goods Database ( see http://vendetta.leechbak.nl/ ) for which items were being sold at my starting point but not at my destination, and found the following items listed:

Basic Targeting Systems
Cooling Systems
Corrosive Chemicals
ERS Tracking Systems
Inert Chemicals
Ishik Ore
Manufacturing Tools
Organic Solvents
Oxygen Recycling System [sic]
Power Regulators
Silksteel
Simple Plastics
Steel
XiRite Alloy
Xithricite Ore

Then, after loading up the remainder of my cargo for the second leg of my trading guild mission, I also loaded up with the following cargo for price-checking/profitable trading:

4x Basic Targeting Systems
4x Cooling Systems
10x Corrosive Chemicals
4x ERS Tracking Systems
10x Inert Chemicals
4x Manufacturing Tools
10x Simple Plastics
10x Steel
10x XiRite Alloy
10x Xithricite Ore

Upon arrival at Odia M-14, after writing down all the prices, I then planned to sell all but one item of each kind, but ran into a serious snag: There is no function to load/unload/sell specific quantities of cargo!

While this is not a serious problem for just one or two types of cargo items, since I can simply undock, temporarily jettison specific quantities of cargo, dock, unload/sell the remainder, undock, collect the floating remainder, dock, and then unload/sell again, for ten different kinds of cargo, this procedure is impractical.

Please add functionality for specifying quantities of cargo to load/unload/sell at stations. It is extremely difficult simultaneously to check prices and trade profitably on ten or more different kinds of trade items while completing the second leg of a trading guild bulk procurement mission otherwise. For a trader, the ability to be able to check prices efficiently on many different items while simultaneously trading profitably and retaining just enough items to continue checking fluctuating market prices is essential.

At minimum, it should be possible to retain just one item of each category to continue checking prices while selling the remainder at a profit without undocking/jettisoning/docking/selling/undocking/collecting/docking/unloading repeatedly.

Just unload everything, don't sell and click in the sell menu. A short answer to a long problem, sorry to dissapoint you:)

Sorry to disappoint you, but that doesn't work for loading just one item each of multiple categories of items to check current market prices at other stations without cluttering up the ship's cargo bay.

For example, suppose I have the following items at a station:

40x Basic Targeting Systems (3 cu each)
40x Cooling Systems (3 cu each)
120x Corrosive Chemicals
40x ERS Tracking Systems (3 cu each)
120x Inert Chemicals
40x Manufacturing Tools (3 cu each)
120x Simple Plastics
120x Steel
120x Ishik Ore
120x Xithricite Ore

Now, suppose I want to finish up the second leg of a trading guild bulk procurement mission while checking prices at other stations along the way in a Behemoth.

Suppose I have only 2 units left of, say, Phase Arrays to deliver, each unit of which takes up 3 cu. That comes up to 6 cu.

Since the Behemoth can carry up to 120 cu, I still have 114 cu left to fill.

I discover that XiRite Alloy sells at the highest profit per cu, so I want to stuff as many units of that while loading just one unit each of everything else to check prices along the way.

So, ideally, what I want to carry is the following:

2x Phase Arrays (3 cu each) (to complete my mission)
96x XiRite Alloys (to maximize my profit)
1x Basic Targeting Systems (3 cu each) (to check the price elsewhere)
1x Cooling Systems (3 cu each) (to check the price elsewhere)
1x Corrosive Chemicals (to check the price elsewhere)
1x ERS Tracking Systems (3 cu each) (to check the price elsewhere)
1x Inert Chemicals (to check the price elsewhere)
1x Manufacturing Tools (3 cu each) (to check the price elsewhere)
1x Simple Plastics (to check the price elsewhere)
1x Steel (to check the price elsewhere)
1x Ishik Ore (to check the price elsewhere)
1x Xithricite Ore (to check the price elsewhere)

Unfortunately, I need to be able to specify the quantity of units of each cargo type to load in order to do this. Simply purchasing 2 units (3 cu each) (6 cu total) of Phase Arrays, then clicking on, say, XiRite Alloy, and then clicking on "Load" will load 114 units of XiRite Alloy, not 96. Clicking on anything else will, similarly, not leave any room for anything else.

I want to check prices on 10 different trade items while simultaneously completing the second leg of my trading mission and maximizing my profit on XiRite Alloy.

Using your solution, I would need to do the following:

1. Purchase 2 units (3 cu each) (6 cu total) of Phase Arrays.
2. Load 114 units of XiRite Alloy.
3. Undock.
4. Jettison 114 - 96 = 18 units of XiRite Alloy (leaving 18 cu space available).
5. Dock.
6. Load 6 units (3 cu each) (18 cu total) of Basic Targeting Systems.
7. Undock.
8. Jettison 5 units (3 cu each) (15 cu total) of Basic Targeting Systems (leaving 15 cu space available).
9. Dock.
10. Load 5 units (3 cu each) (15 cu total) of Cooling Systems.
11. Undock.
12. Jettison 4 units (3 cu each) (12 cu total) of Cooling Systems (leaving 12 cu space available).
13. Dock.
14. Load 12 units of Corrosive Chemicals.
15. Undock.
16. Jettison 11 units of Corrosive Chemicals (leaving 11 cu space available).
17. Dock.
18. Load 3 units (3 cu each) (9 cu total) of ERS Tracking Systems.
19. Undock.
20. Jettison 2 units (3 cu each) (6 cu total) of ERS Tracking Systems (leaving 8 cu available).
21. Dock.
22. Load 8 units of Inert Chemicals.
23. Undock.
24. Jettison 7 units of Inert Chemicals (leaving 7 cu available).
25. Dock.
26. Load 2 units (3 cu each) (6 cu total) of Manufacturing Tools.
27. Undock.
28. Jettison 1 unit (3 cu each) (3 cu total) of Manufacturing Tools (leaving 4 cu available).
29. Dock.
30. Load 4 units of Simple Plastics.
31. Undock.
32. Jettison 3 units of Simple Plastics (leaving 3 cu available).
33. Dock.
34. Load 3 units of Steel.
35. Undock.
36. Jettison 2 units of Steel (leaving 2 cu available).
37. Dock.
38. Load 2 units of Ishik Ore.
39. Undock.
40. Jettison 1 unit of Ishik Ore (leaving 1 cu available).
41. Dock.
42. Load 1 unit of Xithricite Ore.

Finally, I am now done loading. However, I now have (assuming the floating cargo has lasted this long, that is) the following units of jettisoned cargo floating outside the station:

18x XiRite Alloy
5x Basic Targeting Systems (3 cu each)
4x Cooling Systems (3 cu each)
11x Corrosive Chemicals
2x ERS Tracking Systems (3 cu each)
7x Inert Chemicals
1x Manufacturing Tools (3 cu each)
3x Simple Plastics
2x Steel
1x Ishik Ore

This totals 78 cu of assorted floating cargo outside. Now, my first Behemoth is already filled up, and I don't want to risk losing any of the valuable floating cargo outside (assuming somebody else hasn't already stolen it by now).

So, I now need to purchase a second Behemoth, for either 18567 credits (if I happen be at most stations) or for 21527 credits (if I happen to be at Corvus Hold). Now I do the following:

43. Purchase another Behemoth.
44. Purchase a Free Battery for it (otherwise, it won't undock).
45. Undock.
46. Collect all the floating cargo (assuming it hasn't disappeared or been stolen by now).
47. Dock.
48. Unload all.

Sorry to disappoint you, but your solution doesn't work. It takes far too much repetitive work, and it isn't profitable. I need to be able to specify the exact quantity of each item to load into my ship without having to keep jettisoning outside for each item.

nothing is needed.

it would be nice and handy, but it is not needed.

the 48 step workway is just tiresome but it works.

cheers

EDIT: besides if you just wanna check prices then I would not bother with loading seperate amounts and just buy 1 piece of the darned cargo and sell it back afterwards. Less tiresome, but it does give you the feeling of having to do an investment even although it is small to have a possible decent profit after it.

No, it doesn't. The whole point of trading is to profit. The 48-step workaround involves purchasing an extra Behemoth in some cases, which isn't profitable. It DOESN'T work.

Sorry, but I can't purchase what isn't sold at the station. The whole point of stockpiling 10 different kinds of cargo at a single station is to be able to check the selling prices for cargo that isn't sold at the starting point, but is sold elsewhere. I can't even purchase cargo that isn't sold at the station, but I definitely want to check the prices of everything that isn't sold at the destination.

The only way to create my own comprehensive trade database (which is the whole point of checking prices in this manner) and to keep it updated feasibly is to be able to load dozens of different items, even if they aren't sold locally, into a single ship at the same time. I can't buy what isn't sold at the starting station, so simply trying to "just buy 1 piece of the darned cargo" isn't going to work, because many items won't even be sold locally to begin with. And as a trader, I would want to maximize profit along the way, so it would be very useful to carry out trading guild missions as I do this, too.

Being able to specify exact quantities of what to load (and, if possible, what to unload and to sell) at the station is essential to being able to check prices on multiple items while carrying out trading guild missions.

Ah, ok. I didn't understand the problem properly. I thought you were trying to sell all but one of something, and keep the rest in your cargo bay. Sorry.

As an implementation idea, I suggest modifying the current "Load," "Unload," and "Unload and Sell" buttons in the Cargo tab in the station view screen so that they simply pop up a dialog box, labelled "Specify Quantity," for specifying the quantity with the maximum value pre-selected as a default value.

For example, if the player has 120 units of XiRite Alloy at the station and clicks on the "Load" button, it would pop up a dialog box, labelled "Specify Quantity," with the value 120 pre-selected. If the player then wants to load only 1 unit, he/she would simply just type 1, and click on the "Okay" button. Otherwise, he/she would click on the "Cancel" button to cancel the dialog box, which would cancel the load operation.

Also, just modify the "Unload" and "Unload and Sell" buttons similarly. Retain the "Unload All" and "Unload and Sell All" buttons as they are now.

Umm, have you tried selling your cargo from the Sell menu? you can do precise amounts from there...
May 15, 2005 Starfisher link
This is about loading specific amounts of cargo. It is currently impossible to simply "Load 1 cu of X" if you have a pile of ten. This is a very basic functionality that is missing from the game, and I can see how a dedicated trader would find it annoying.

Heh. This was one of my original suggestions in my first post here in the suggestions forum. I don't think it's quite as crucial as Deku makes it sound, but it would be very handy.
May 15, 2005 DekuDekuplex Ornitier link
Another option, if popping up a dialog box proves difficult, is to rearrange the buttons in the "Cargo" tab so that there are three different buttons each for loading/unload/selling cargo, as follows:

Load 1
Load 10
Load All

Unload 1
Unload 10
Unload All

Sell 1
Sell 10
Sell All

(For reference, this kind of approach is actually the one currently adopted in Vega Strike ( see http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/ ), a single-player, open-source, free space simulator. As a disclaimer, again, allow me to mention that that title, being single-player and free, is not a direct competitor to Vendetta™ Online. Unlike VO, it emphasizes trading over combat, although it does include bounty-hunting missions, and allows docking with planets and speaking with bartenders and accepting missions from fellow bar visitors. Being single-player, it does not allow PvP (Player vs. Player) combat, does not allow direct strafing, has a much higher learning curve, and currently has some bugs in its implementation of the "SPEC" (warp) drive, which occasionally overshoots the destination. Also, it has a somewhat unwieldy interface, in that clicking on links does not always activate them unless the player is extremely careful in where to click. However, it is a nice complement to VO. I find that it actually increases my enjoyment of VO.)
