Respawning quirk

May 23, 2005 Harry Seldon link
I'm likely to be disliked for this particular suggestion, but I think that the current respawning system is reminiscent of an exploit. The reason for this is because people can ferry a ship down to sedina, /explode, and be instantly transported to their start location, which could be easily 5 jumps distant. I understand that ferrying ships to Sedina takes time. However, it's totally unrealistic that your escape pod transports you 5 systems.

What I would suggest doing is have a "home station" that you set (and is persistent in a system), and when you die in that system, you get transported back to that station. This would go for all systems, where you would have to choose a station. The reason I suggest that you be able to pick the station you warp back to in a given system, is because in systems like Sedina, everyone would spawn at a certain station, and certain stations don't have the ship you want. So, in the interest of expediency within reason, I'd like to be able to pick which station.

In the event that you had not already chosen a station in that system, you would simply be warped to the closest one.

One problem I see with this idea, is that you could get trapped in hostile space if you were in there to go botting. My solution: Have it warp you to the closest station outside of hostile space, where your rank is at least -599 or higher.

This system would also eliminate insta-warping to far-off systems if you forgot to home, particularly if you are rushed into battle after traveling to, say, Sedina from Divinia.

I dunno how many 2c I've given out recently, but it's starting to add up.... :P

I would find this extremely annoying at first, but once I got used to it I might like it better than the current situation.

No dislike here for the suggestion, but a disagreement perhaps.

The only difference in me ferrying some ships to Sedina with your suggestion vs the way it is now is that I would have to waste time & the cost of a ship flying back.
Flying Valks from Itaniville to Sedina is enough of a pain without making it a round-trip. Once I have a few ships of my choice where I want them I home there anyways.
If I run out of ships then I have to choose from the for-sale list at the station I'm homed in...

I don't think this is an exploit, but a way to get some rather boring tasks done without too much boredom.

...my 2c.

Because of the distances involved in traveling from Itani space, perhaps Itan should have a garrison (read: Itani station that sells stuff like Valks) where the CtC route starts. I know it's boring to ferry ships down there, and it's discouraging diversity.

I dunno about other players, but money is no issue when it comes to buying a fast ship to go back to Itani space in, and participation in CtC and PvP move me all over the place, so I make a point of having a nice Valk, or IBG when I fly to Sedina, and fly something like a Vult III when escorting CtC back. However, I think in the interest of encouraging ship diversity in B8, we ought to have that Itani garrison.

I'll agree to that!
AND I suppose there could be a serco one too...

It just bugs me that b8 is the center of the universe (so to speak) and serco is like 3 jumps away, uit is 2 jumps and itani is like 5...it gets boring sometimes and ends up making me stay away from itani and the IBG and Valks...

No, we don't need the Serco one. Initros is close enough, and besides, we don't want to encourage proms yet more, (I can't believe I'm saying this, but after almost a month in not much but prom mkiis, I think I've seen the light).

Once the Order of Eo vs Order of Akan thing gets moving and is implemented, this garrison could easily be part of the Akanese network, giving access to the "backdoor" of Serco space. This was mentioned in the backstory, and I think it would fit nicely.

Also, the addition (or perhaps merely changing of nation status, an easy feat for the devs) of this garrison is the only real speedbump (except perhaps fixing the spawning thing to work in a similar manner to the one I have described. :P ) to adding this in.

hmm... while drastic, this sort of thing could be a welcome upset.. I'm not so sure yet, myself

although, a lot of duellists sure like their rCs, and the nearest Orion to b8 is in Latos.. :/

Agreed! Personally, I consider using the "/explode" command an exploit in trading, because it doesn't make any sense from a role-playing perspective, and detracts from the realism and immersiveness of VO just to promote efficiency. Efficiency is important, but, IMHO, not at the expense of realism.

While admittedly a drastic measure, frankly, I think that this command should be removed. If not, at least there should be heavy penalties for abusing it. Personally, I would suggest at least implementing the following two measures to curtail abuse:

1) Every time the command is issued, it counts as a duel loss, and lowers your duel rating. This is to prevent cheap tactics in duels where the would-be-loser self-destructs to deny the opponent a win. (I haven't dueled very often yet, so if this idea has already been implemented, then please ignore this part.)

2) In addition, if you are on a trading mission, and issue the command, it lowers your faction standing for the faction for whom you are trading significantly, say, by 200 points. This is to prevent cheap trading tactics where traders repeatedly self-destruct on bulk procurement missions. The best such missions earn as much as 400 points for two round trips (some earn that much for just one round trip), so 200 points seems a fair cost.

IMHO, in general, anything that takes away from VO's realism just for increased inefficiency should be either removed or neutralized to void any such increased efficiency. Otherwise, only the cheapskate cheaters can win.

I disagree with you Deku. Trade missions are boring and long. Anything we can do to make it a little easier and faster should be allowed.

I personally do /explode for long range trade mission to save me a little time. (Actually I sometimes explode to Sedina L2 from B8 :) I don't see it as an exploit I see it as a feature of the game. And everyone can do it so it doesn't give me an advantage.

And this game isn’t totally real. And it’s not meant to be. It’s a game and sometimes realism goes out the window for the sake of efficiency and expediency.

And I never explode during duels but I think you would lose the duel if you did /explode.

I agree about removing /explode. I mean can any of you honestly say that you've ever had to use it in a practical way? Was there ever a situation where you were completely stuck? Now that you can warp anywhere when you've reached distances beyond 3000m, there's no excuse for spacers (people who go WAY OUT into space for stupid reasons) to have this command. But for the sake of argument let's say you do manage to get stuck somehow. You can always ask a guide for assistance to get you out of a situation where you'd be stuck. But I don't think it happens enough, if ever, to warrant a /explode command.

I don't see removing /explode as a solution to the problem. I use explode all the time, but I'm perfectly willing to live without it if everyone else is. But I can always find a way to get exploded. (I know a few sercos that try to help me with this every time they see me.)

If we could add an escape module or something. The idea seams bad at first, but if we put some thought into it, it could become an adventure unto itself. Some have already suggested passenger liners. I could expand on this idea here, but perhaps I should go find the relevant thread. Think about it.
