Short range fighter

Y'all remember the scene in the original Star Wars where the Millenium Falcon jumps into the Alderaan system, and they see the TIE fighter, and Luke says "It followed us!" and Kenobi says "No, it's a short range fighter"?

Now that we have capital ships we can dock with, and soon will be able to pilot, why not have short range fighters, that are completely unable to jump to a different sector, or warp through wormholes? The only way it could travel to differnt sectors or systems would be docking with a capital ship. It would also be useful for defending stations.

I'd suggest there be stripped-down, short range versions of the Centurion & Vulture classes.

Short range Centurion:
(Itani special?)
Level: 5/6/-/-/-
Armor: 6200
Cargo: 1
Weapons: 1 small
Mass: 3000 kg
Length: 10 m
Thrust: 220 N
Max Speed: 80 m/s
Spin Torque: 8.0 Nm
Turbo Speed: 240 m/s
Turbo Energy: 60/s

Short range Vulture:
(Serco special?)
Level: 5/6/-/-/-
Armor: 8200
Cargo: 1
Weapons: 2 small
Mass: 3600 kg
Length: 10 m
Thrust: 235 N
Max Speed: 80 m/s
Spin Torque: 8.5 Nm
Turbo Speed: 225 m/s
Turbo Energy: 60/s

Both of those would be really cool to have as well as what was mentioned in this post.

The smallest of those ships IMO should be like you say, short range, which is why they require the larger ship for transport.

Actually, it was always my hope that ALL fighters would be short range (defined as unable to activate a wormhole). It'd make capships more fun. I wrote a very long post on the subject once upon a time.

I've considered several of the Vulture variants to be short-range due to their high turbo drain. They can still jump, of course. Interesting idea.

Not a bad idea... we'd definitely need more types of capital ships though. What about trade missions?

If their short range make a new mother F'ing ship. Im tired of seeing the same ships.

Kinda hard to make a new ship when the artist left, but there is art that needs to be implemented, but this art is destined for bigger ships and hive stuff.

heavy batteries... there's your short range fighter.

Perhaps there could be some experience track which would allow you batteries with higher and higher capacity (but with no increase from the 45 recharge of the heavy) to really allow people to become
fighters of this kind.

I'm inclined to disagree with sticking with the traditional fighter and simply modifying the battery, simply because, in terms of physics and gameplay, if you were to dump the heavy jump-drive off of your ship, you would end up with a much more lethal fighter.

Overall, I like the idea of being limited to one system while flying one of these fighters.

What about CtC?
Jun 04, 2005 Beolach link
These short range fighters wouldn't be much use for CtC, which is one of the reasons I don't think they should completely replace the regular fighters we have now - the "long range" fighters we have now would still have many uses. But, the stripped-down short range fighters would have a bit better maneuverability & faster speed, so in cases where it's feasible for a cap-ship to cart them around, they would be superior. For CtC, piracy, and other operations involving travel & combat at the same time, the current long range fighters would be better, but for attacking & defending stations, attacking Leviathan lairs, and other operations where the combat would take place primarily in a single sector, the short range fighters would be better.

For the ship model, I would agree that it would be cool to have a new model, but that has the drawback of adding significantly to the time required to implement it. And there's no reason for the ship manufacturers to design a completely new ship chasis, when they could use a Centurion or Vulture chasis.

Yes their is a need. Why Just take out the Jumpdrive? Why not engineer a new chassis to take advantage of the extra speed and firepower. Im saying. Get Harry Seldon to Design one, As he is VERY good at modeling. I wouldnt mind seeing him as a new dev.

i would like to peropose 2 amendments to the above mentioned stats:

1. short range fighters should be easier to get than their long range counterparts. the main reason for carier depended tfighters is they are cheep and easy to replace. as such i would like to see the level requirnments dropped to around 1/1 to 1/2. i mean it's not like these ships are in any way "broken" they can't even leve the station where you bought them without the aid of a cap. ship.

2. i think the cent version should have a second S mount or a single L mount in place of it's one S. That way you get the inpression that the hyperdrive was replaced with weapon and engin systems rather than just removed. The same should be true of the vult. (haveing 3S instead of 2S)

Additionaly this may make a use for the Carrier Moth i had seen somone perpose earlier. (the idea being a moth could sacrafice the majority of it's cargo space to become a carier for a single fighter (probably a cent)

...Then youd have to design a smaller fighter as the Cent and Vult dont look right if you were to put it in the Moth. The Cent would be too long and the Vult too wide.

What we would need for something like this, is a large (1/2 to 1/3 size of the cap ship) cargo ship. Cargo ships shouldn't be small ships, and I personally think that a ship that can ferry 120cu ought to be much larger. The only thing stopping this however is the current size of the docks.

I like the idea a lot.

It makes perfect sense to me, make a some ships have better performance but loose the ability to warp, keep current ships as is, make a new moth that can cary like... 2 short range fighters...

and *poof* now you have a reason for joining a guild or group besides just the easier chatting.

I dont know, but it could be fun if these short range fighters could make 2 jumps after they undock, but only to a neighboring sector, and offcourse no WH jumps. That way, when you see these ships jump in, you know that there must be a bigger ship in one of the neighboring sectors. Or maybe not...
I do like the short range fighter idea a lot.

That Othiamba Person was me. GET HARRY SELDON TO MAKE SOME SHORT RANGE LOOKING FIGHTERS! HIS 3D MODELS ARE THE SHIZNIT!!!
Jun 05, 2005 Harry Seldon link
Haha, thanks. I wasn't gonna make any more, since I was didn't want come across to the people who were trying to design a ship for the first time as insulting their aptitude. I'll look into making another ship, if people want me to...
Jun 06, 2005 pirate_n00b link
Harry. I suck at 3D Ships and you will NEVER insult my aptitude. I think your just saying that to get out of modeling.
