Short range fighter

It's finals week. Give me a break. ;)

I'll look into making another, I s'pose. Since I won't have access to my LightWave computer for a few days, I'll have to do it in Blender ( www.blender3d.org ), another free application (that looks *really* scary when you open it up...it's like "wtf, what do all these buttons do? And where are the ones I need??" However, if you can get past it's initial interface wierdness, then you'll do fine, and it can do a lot of stuff more easily than in other Pro apps, albeit with less flexibility).

"Im saying. Get Harry Seldon to Design one, As he is VERY good at modeling. I wouldnt mind seeing him as a new dev."

Hehe, just noticed that. Thankee for the compliment. :D

Designed to be a short-range fighter, based on capital ships and stations, the Hermes has been stripped of heavy components, such as a jump drive, and faster-than-light engines in order to gain an edge over other ships. Because of the folding-wing design (see hinges), Carriers save space in their holds for additional ships. Some captains have been known to outfit their ships with additional weaponry with this excess space, or replacing parts of their hangar bays with generators.

This is also a commonly seen ship on Border patrol missions, due to it's high speed and short range nature.

Yes, I did get around to making it. Forgive the sloppy camera work, I don't have access to my desktop computer right now, and have been trying to figure out camera controls in Blender... :/

I like the model, but it looks more like a medium sized vessel then a small short range one. But keep up the good work. =)

Hey very nice Harry (as ever ;p)

1 advice about what Johnaw said: give it a BIGGER cockpit like the valk may be , this will reduce his size, try it I saw most of the ships you poseted here and they 're all good but no one can replace my valk cause u didn't make one of his category... just try it give it a bigger cockpit and then hell yeah i'll sell my valk for it =p

About the cockpits...

I really don't think that VO ships ought to be so small that they actually need cockpits that large, and I also think that it takes away from the immersiveness when I see a ship that has a parker-brothers' style of ship: Everything is pronounced and overscaled, and is kinda cartoony looking overall. While the Valk looks like it'd be a muscle car in today's world, it still kinda looks like a small plastic toy. This doesn't only apply to the Valk, either.

Anyways, I try to keep my models sized so that it doesn't seem like it's a cockpit strapped to a rocket with some gizmos attached (kinda like VO's ships are like, but you know what I mean.).

Actually, Harry, we're talking proportions here. If a fighter has a cockpit that's large in proportion to the rest of the fighter, the fighter will appear smaller than a fighter with a cockpit small in proportion tto the rest of the fighter. This is because unless there's some visible indication as to whether one cockpit is indeed larger than another, then we'll assume they're the same size.

example:
http://www.evula.org/virtualgoo/vendetta/three_fighters.jpg

all three cockpits are the same size but the fighters are obviously different sizes.

So to make a fighter look smaller and lighter, if you reverse my process and scale the cockpits up so they're larger in relation to the rest of the fighter, then you'll have a fighter that looks smaller.

I understand that making a larger cockpit will make a seemingly smaller ship.

I was not really talking how I should make the cockpit bigger, but rather how Vendetta's cockpits were strangely large. But sure, I understand what you're saying. I'll poke about the model again.

Edit: One more note about Short Range fighters: They don't neccicarily need to be a smaller size than other fighters, but because they are lacking some of the equipment for jumping, they can use that space for additional thrusters or weapon systems.

sounds like the idea has potential, people always talk about balance, but in reality balance isn't the problem (me thinks) its the tactics. I feel like there is only 1 type of fighter that works (and isn't shunned) the agile dodging ship, with somewhat light weapons. Heavy weapons tend to be useless or uber, and heavy ships get torn apart, so everyone flies the same ships. Adding some additional parameters like with this idea about the short range fighters in addition to other variations could finally make VO have specialized fighter types.

Model update

My own, updated: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v178/Dimpfinator/GreenHermes.jpg

I agree with Dark_Phoenix. Everyone goes to polar ends of the scale: Either SCP, or Rev C's are the norm because of the uselessness of the in-betweens.

More on my ideas about this here:

It's not that the inbetweens are useless. They are extremely effective, but you also have to be a much better pilot, because you can't afford mistakes.

long range: http://www.myklittle.co.uk/stuff/elite/Serco_Scorpion_tex.jpg

short range: http://www.myklittle.co.uk/stuff/elite/Serco_Scorpion_variant.jpg

the variant was originally going to be an 'overpowered' prototype (that led to additional engines and power generation), but i suppose it could also be a non-jump variant.

Hey nice work guys !
First of all you all 3 did well so congrats to CP harry and myko your ships are so great...

BUT

I think that for a SHORT RANGE FIGHTER the best answer is CP's one Harry and myko your ships could be some faction fighters ( serco and itani i think) but not a short range fighter that u can only have FROM another (cap)ship i think effort should be made more in the CP's way
BTW keep up the good work all :)
hope to fly in your ship one day :)

Thanks for the complement, GRAIG, but I didn't post the link to this forum. So just so that people don't think you meant that funky Valk-like abortion, I'll post it here.

Basically a smaller IBG/Rev-C/Vulture. But yea..
