Weak point, Every Good Ship oughta have one

Jul 21, 2005 Shapenaji link
So, a while back, having damaged ships lose functionality based on where they were hit was suggested, this is a great idea, but possibly a little difficult to implement.

But maybe we can take a step in that direction.

What if certain ships would take double damage if hit in a few key points.

So, all ships would have a weak point on the nose/cockpit area. You take damage there, and not only are you losing navigation (most fighters today keep nav stuff in the nose), you're losing you.

But say, the prom might have a weakness around the belly (well armored ship, but it needs a way to disperse heat, so it has slightly less armor around the bottom, where the vents are)

The engines might be a common weakpoint too, if you hit them directly on the back they take double (ought to be a good way to discourage running, and a way to deal with the apparently absurd armor on the Moth)

With a little thought we could come up with realistic weakpoints for all the ships. And it would really force people to learn to guard something.

And the functionality is already there, where you take damage is tracked.

Not on fighters. Shot speed is way to slow to make it anything but luck, unless the targets are very large areas (like everything you can hit while behind the target). In the latter case it would just make certain ships worse at fighting, or worse at running. It might work if all the fighters were vulnerable from behind. Though rockets would have to be handled very carefully as they might break the system.

Shape, fighters today expect to be attacked from behind. Vendetta fights are not similar to atmospheric combat.

The table border agrees with Genka that anthropology is cool?

Ehhh, I don't like this idea very much. I agree that different parts of the ship should malfunction and should change the way the ship flies. But I'd hate to be instakilled by one lucky shot from an enemy or bot. Stuff like that would get annoying pretty quick, I'd imagine.

Also, realize that the center of any ship/object is always targeted by autoaim. The whole weak spot thing would give rocket and railgun users a huge advantage over people who use other weapons. And while you can try to fire other energy weapons without autoaim, it'll be next to impossible to hit a specific spot that way with the current speeds we have now for anything but the railgun.

So in effect I think this proposal will throw off weapon balance and it'll create a lot of "WTF!! I died that quick?!" complaints online. However, I do like the idea of location specific damage, which I believe most people already agreed would be cool (especially the new dev). Yay!

i don't realy like the idea of week spots, or localazed damage on fighters. I mean fighters are so small that it's just as easy and effective (if not more so) to destroy them than it is to disable them.

The only way i'd support the idea of localised damage on fightes is if it were conbined with a system that made actualy destroying a fighter real hard, but crippling one about as difficult as destroying one is now. (so that piolts wouldn't die so much as get the tar pounded out of them and return to base) so that a sevier penalty could be created for actualy dying, wiothout killing PVP as we know it.

Notice that i have not said anything about sectional damage or weekspots on capitle ships. That is because i'm not shure wher i stand on that issue any more specificly than it is probably a good idea if implemented properly.

I'm with Eld. It would be a tough thing to do on fighters. especially rockets.

And I thought images were banned in all except the Off topic board.

No, that was just a stupid idea someone had. I think. Maybe. I hope.

As for cap-ship weak spots, they already have them. The friggy's got an excellent blind spot to abuse, if you can get there and stay there.
