Personal Transport

Jul 26, 2005 Fnugget link
If there would be a new ship, I'd like to see a real personal transport. 300 infini turbo, no weapons port, and more flimsy than a paper centurion. Maybe UIT, Axia Technology Corp, or Aeolus Trading Prefectorate.
UIT need to move their senate people, axia having cool technology to make such a fast and small ship, or Aeolus needing to move their business men to make trade deals. A few possible reasons to explain who would have one. Just an idea.

Introducing the Star Streak 3000, the ship so fast it's gone before you know it! With a 300 m/s infiniturbo engine this puppy is 80 m/s faster than its nearest competitor. Nothing in the universe can hope to catch you!

Grey space? Pshaw! Ion storm? No problem! You're in your own safe sight-seeing bubble of invincible, everlasting speed. You'll never want to fly another ship from point A to point B!

/sarcasm

Seriously though... a super agile personal transport, or even a race ship with no weapon ports is a pretty cool idea, I just think infiniturbo is evil. Imho no ship faster than 180 m/s should have infiniturbo. Nothing wrong with having such a ship that's better at getting around, 300 m/s infiniturbo just seems a little unbalanced.

Gah, infiniturbo is NOT evil! It's an advantageous feature that some, but not all, ships should have. It's a way for there to be variety in ships - if all ships have, or all ships do not have, infiniturbo, then there's less variety.

But, I do agree that there should be a maximum speed that no ship w/ infiniturbo should have. But I think 180m/s is too low, I'd say 200m/s, maybe a bit higher, would be better. But 300m/s infiniturbo would be too much. If it's a ship w/ no ports & next to no armor, I could see it having a turbo speed maybe as high as 250m/s. Although I'd think around 235m/s would be better.

On a slightly related note, does anyone use the Cent II or Valk Rune anymore? /me really thinks they should get infiniturbo again. As they are now I find them completely pointless.

okay, how about this. 250, drain 60, but would definitely accelerate faster than a hog td. no...drain 70 or 75, tops 280, and able to reach that speed soon. and make the torque really low. make it turn like a behemoth full of xith, but speed like nothing else. 1 to 3 cu, no weapons. low normal thrust, but amazing turbo thrust. All this to make it utterly useless for anything but moving real fast. BTW, it wouldn't be able to race the tracks with a turn that slow. it would definitely win a race around the universe though.

This would make the Trading Guild "Special Delivery" missions interesting for veteran players. Devs could lower the bonus timers for anyone with Trade 8+ and access to this ship and beating the clock would be that much more nailbiting :) (Though, I think there would be a point at which loading times would put a floor on how low the timer could go, and would eventually be biased in favor of people with fast connections)

I'm all in for more variety :) I agree with most of Fnugget's suggestions... infiniturbo would be a bit much, and forward acceleration should be it's only strong point... It should be able to cross a sector on a Heavy battery, but should it be intercepted by a crafty pie-rat, it should have a tough time reorienting itself.

what is the difference with turbotap and infinisboost except letting the first be nothing but a contineous strainage on my key? Or some non lazy scripter that can use the +turbo and wait order so well that they can make one themselves...

if the disadvantage armorwise, cargowise and weaponswise more then makes up to make it unusuable in any other place then as a personal transport then i do not see a problem in it.

Turbotap was a bug. It doesn't work any more. Infiniturbo was a temporary measure before they modified the engines. It is still evil. It's getting to the point where I would endorse a well-thought-out fuel system.

turbotapping works just fine now, but only at a lower speed than before.
Jul 27, 2005 roguelazer link
However, the issue before was with people getting 212m/s with infiniboost using turbo-tapping. Yes, you can tap to somewhere around 140m/s (using the fastest engines). That's considerably less useful.
Jul 27, 2005 terjekv link
eh? you can turbotap far above 140 in a Valk?
Jul 27, 2005 Renegade ++RIP++ link
valk 170 at least, normally faster but not with a heavy load... (unless they did an overhaul the last month...). Although this is a low estimate...
Jul 27, 2005 tramshed link
with proper turbotapping you can stay at a pretty high speed most of the time. turbo tapping isnt about the infiboost, since you dont need to do it infinitely, the longest you should likely need to do it is 15000m, and since a valk can cover about 10000 with normal turbo, you can draw another highspeed 5000m out of it rather easily.

Beolach... I don't use the Cent II or Valk Rune anymore, they are pretty useless.
The Cent II was my favourite for "Special Delivery" missions. The Valk Rune was
fun to fly but I never used it much. I don't have much objection to a 300 m/s
infiniturbo as long it carried no weapons, and had one, maybe two cu cargo space.
Perhaps it could be set up to carry scanners but NO weapons. And, as Fnugget
specified, very little armour. A perfect personal transport/scout ship. I think this
type of ship would add some much needed variety !! Good Idea !!

I still use the CentII...

For what?
Jul 29, 2005 Fnugget link
CentII would still be quite usable if this Personal Transport is implemented. CentII would be much more agile, can defend itself with weapons, and has decent cargo room. Although the PT would have high turbo drain, you wouldn't need to turbo for very long to get to your destination. In the time it takes to wait for battery charge, or turning to face the right direction, it would be so vulnerable to attack. In overall travel time, it would definitely cut down.

BTW, anyone feel like modeling one?
Jul 29, 2005 Beolach link
No, I'm not talking about if this personal transport is implemented, I'm talking about, comparing the CentII to the CentI & the CentIII, why would anyone use the CentII?

The CentII has horrible acceleration compared to the other Cents. It is supposedly faster than the CentI, as it has a higher max turbo speed, but its acceleration is so bad compared to the CentI, I really think the CentI is faster. The CentI has a base acceleration of 50m/s2, the CentII has a base acceleration of 41 2/3m/s2, and the CentIII has 47.778m/s2.

I honestly think that if the CentII doesn't have infiniturbo, there's no reason to use it. It may as well be removed from the game. Same with the Valkyrie Rune. Yeah, sure they have 3 more cargo units capacity, but franky, if I want to have cargo capacity, I'm going to fly something else, anyway. There's tons of ships that are much better cargo capacity, and also outperform the CentII and Valk Rune in combat.
