Cargo as a Weapon?

Previously, some players have asked for a way to use cargo as a weapon. A few months ago I designed these two weapons:

(S) Mass Driver
Damage:
1
Force: 1
Velocity: 175m/s
Energy: 50/shot
Delay: 1.2s
Mass: 1200kg
Levels: 4/4/-/5/3
Ammo: 2

(L) Mass Driver MkII
Damage:
1
Force: 1
Velocity: 185m/s
Energy: 60/shot
Delay: 1.0s
Mass: 1200kg
Levels: 4/-/4/6/4
Ammo: 2

1: The force and damage of the shot are equivalent to the force exerted by an object (and the damage caused by said object) with the mass of one unit of ore being fired at the velocity specified for the weapon being used.
2: Any ore that is not part of a mission or Capture the Cargo is valid ammo for the Mass Driver. This means that you can mine ore and use it as ammo--or simply buy ore from the station and use that.

It looks like that if you wanted the best punch (force-wise) you would want to use Xithricite, Pyronic or VanAzek and not Heliocene or Aquean.

Listed from most damage/force to least:

Xithricite -- 300kg/cu
Pyronic -- 300kg/cu
VanAzek -- 250kg/cu
Apicene -- 200kg/cu
Ferric -- 200kg/cu
Lanthanic -- 200kg/cu
Carbonic -- 150kg/cu
Denic -- 150kg/cu
Ishik -- 150kg/cu
Silicate -- 150kg/cu
Precious Metals -- 130kg/cu
Heliocene -- 100kg/cu
Aquean -- 70kg/cu

So I'm seeing people using VanAzek for general use and Xith if they can get it easily.

Hmmm, the logic of this would imply: cargo floating in space should do damage if I run into it fast enough.

I like this idea

Only question is then, do we take damage when we zoom in to capture cargo from a transport or a killed bot, or only when it's fired from a cannon? If we did take damage for slamming into crates then they could be used as a poor mans mine field, and we'd need a new way to load cargo, perhaps by selecting it and tranctoring it into our hull using a beam animation.

it has to either be spikey and take a port, or simply add a button that turns "on" and "off" when "on" you can pick up cargo. when "off" cargo bounces off and you might get rammed... :D

If it's a switch, then people would just always have it on "pickup" mode, so that they never take damage. I think it'd be better to have it based off speed: say if you're traveling between 1 & 100 m/s, then that speed is the percent chance that you won't pick it up, and instead will take collision damage. So if you're traveling 100m/s or faster, you can't pick up any cargo, you have to slow down.

It would be the relative speed between the ship and the cargo, so if the cargo was fired from one of Celkan's Mass Drivers, another pilot could try to match speed with it & pick it up. Brings new meaning to handing off CtC Xith for an assist. ;-)

The idea was that you use ore not cargo in general.

This makes the whole picking up discussion line rather moot--what you are effectively doing is taking mined or bought ore and turning it into railgun pellets. Not, as some people seem to think, firing cargo canisters.

This isn't a "cargo gun" as you guys are describing it. It's a low-power railgun that has the benefits of adding an exertion of force to its impact as well as the ability to top off anywhere with a mining beam.

The first benefit should be part of the original railgun's feature list anyway--it's not a real energy weapon but rather a solid object being fired at high speeds.

To sum that short post up: a toggle switch would not be necessary--but a small menu to determine which ore the MD would use (if there was more than one type in your hold) akin to the jettison menu would be appropriate as the toggle switch implies that we're dealing only with cargo canisters here, both as ammo and as the actual round that has been fired--the latter of which is not true at all.

Awww. I liked the cargo gun like we were describing that could lob Ion Cores at our enemies. *KLONK!*

But your actual idea is pretty cool - you can then reload ammo at any handy asteroid. Neat.

What if you could eventually have some device on larger ships that would generate ammo like this? I mean, once crafting is done, you could equip your capship with a "railgun pellet former" item, and then instead of docking at a station and BUYING ammo, you could mixe Xith and the "railgun pellet former" would replenish your ammo while out-of-station?

Too crazy?

Yeah I guess a capship version of it would work like that.

I just think the idea of firing samoflange widgets at an enemy is just too... wrong... to be allowable. :)

I like BOTH ideas. Why can't both be discussed. There's no reason you couldn't launch cargo at someone.

Let me add a twist on the original idea:
Make specific ships that attach themselves to asteroids, mine them, and have large mass drivers that shoot the cargo as it appears. They would be able to tow the 'roids, albeit at slow speeds. This way, you would get moving gun platforms that could be used to control areas, attack stations, and such things.

Very cool suggestion Toshiro, I've always wanted a gun platform in VO just makes sense. There could be NPC versions in border sectors as well and around stations as extra turrets outside the NFZ incase of Hive/Pirate invasions (or Serco/Itani).

Yeah, too bad it got discontinued :/ (A french fansubs site is still subbing them, but I couldn't log in, i guess they found out I'm not french...)

LeberMac: Rather like Artillery in Rise Of Nations. You tow it where you want it, deploy it and you're set to go. But when it gets attacked, you'd better have some fighter cover ready.
The Goliath Cannon (assuming you're referring to the Curtiss-Wright J2 Fury and, more specifically, its large guns) and the german 8.8cm Flak (mounted on StuKa planes)) was still very maneuverable.
