More NPCs?
I know that there aren't that many people playing the game, and I think it would be pretty cool if there were more NPC traders and such.
Just regular joes going about their business flying about. They could occasionally hail you and ask for protection as they fly through a dangerous sector and reward you. Or hire you to help them carry something. Make these mains capitols and space stations seem like there's some type of industry and people are going in and out. Some NPCs could also just talk to you and tell you their life story or a little bit about themselves.

(EDIT-- Not that Genka is particularly wise, or particularly inclined to sit on top of mountains on the capital planet of his greatest foe. I just meant it sounded like something he'd say. *gasp* I need to go wash my keyboard now...)
