In Sector Navigation

Nov 12, 2005 f12x link
I feel that there needs to be a more robust user interface to the coordinate system within a sector. The main reason for this stems from my frustration in the mining missions. Too often, the symetry of certain systems makes it difficult to know which rocks have already been scanned, and when you're looking for the last rock, that can be very frustrating. So here's my suggestion: either the radar need to also show an x,y,z,origin coordinate system as a reference frame, or there need to be a smarter ship computer that will automatically mark rocks that have already been scanned by your ship.

That (storing scanned asteroid stats) would be awsome! Would it be by scanner, by ship, or by character? Also, a third mineral scanner which gave the mass of scanned asteroids would be nice as well.

i think the ability to add custum notes is planed for the new UI. but if i recall the reason you can't get acess to a specific corrdinate system is to prevent players from writing macros that let them trade/mine/etc while not actualy at the computer (by mining i mean mining and returning to base with the cargo and going back out to the 'roid)

perhaps if in addition to displaying the distance from any nearby objects the HUD could also display distance from the cener of the sector (or preferably from the center of the system) that way you get some sence of position without giving too much information.

>>"the HUD could also display distance from the cener of the sector"<<

How about that and a pair of 3D tic marks that point to the center of the sector and the stellar north? using those visual aides, a pilot could find a specific object in a sector, but without numeric data, would not be able to write a macro to do it for them.

you could put the rangedata and tic marks on a 3D globe nav radar at the bottom center, where the 3-click bar is now.

Back during my mining phase, I whined and bitched about this for hours.

Search for /displayshippos or coordinate system or beacons or something like that. The topic has been hashed over multiple times.

Apparently it is exploitable and the devs removed it after PCs made various automatic bots and there was the possibility of a hyper-accurate auto aim hack due to it. My guess is that as long as the increments were made large enough, none of this would be an issue... but I'd be willing to be that /displays hippos won't be returning anytime soon, either.

Actually, the autoaim hack was something totally different (monitoring the color of a particular known pixel on the screen...)

The automatic bots actually got pirated more than they got anything done. It was rather amusing to go and blast the trade bot a bunch of times ^^

Still, bots and macros have been the end of many a good MMORPG, so I for one don't mind the price we're paying to ensure they dond't enter this game.

or a person could buy thingeis that when dropped would display on the hud. perhaps these would last for weeks or months! but only ther person who dropped it could see it.

Yes, like bouys. Also, with bouys, hopefully the graphic information would be too difficult to use to make bots/macros.
