A couple of quick radar and targeting suggestions

Oct 13, 2006 Gavan link
1. Make it so that Cap guns don't show up the same as ships..

2. Make it possible to turn off the ability to target certain objects.

Reasons: After fighting in Racer's uber war tonight, the biggest challenge (aside from actually hitting laggy bots) was knowing what was going on radar wise (when there's 5 or 6 caps and 50+ ships, you need to know the difference on the radar between ships and turrets), and actually managing to target my intended victim when there was 25 cargo crates between me and it.

I agree, especially with the first one. The ability to disable the display of certain objects on radar already exists (stations, wormholes,...), your suggestion would simply require a revamp of that.

Maybe the radar contacts for capships could have a wireframe outline. Connect the dots style.

Or just replace all radar dots with wireframe renderings of the contact's model. </crazyidea>

mmm.. why not just make turrets and other individually targetable parts of a ship show half-sized radar contact dots?

I'd rather just see the only the cap ship appear, and turrets not at all. How does a radar tell the difference anyway? That would also make a good challenge since you must spot the turrets yourself. Of course, that's not too hard since they're shooting....

I disagree. Turrets should be targetable, but their showing up in radar should be, uh... toggleable.

How about if turrets showed up as neutral on radar, thus making them only targetable using the b key, and not the z or x keys? That way, if you wanted to target an enemy turret, you could always point at it and hit b, but when you're trying to quickly target a hostile vessel itself, you could use the x or z keys and get it right away.

This would also help solve the problem of capships appearing closer on radar than they are (with the stacking red dots) and help you tell at a glance how many SHIPS are on radar.

Finally, cap ships should have a larger dot on radar than smaller craft, for differentiation's sake.

Yes, different size dots. And the ability to select whether a type of dot is targetable.

I want to be able to make it so that 'x' does not target people in my group. (I think anyone who's ever done BP or BS will give a resounding 'Amen' for that one.)

I also still want to be able to customize the colors of the dots in my radar. (I'd have guild ships show up as dots the same color as guild chat and I'd have a couple pirates (listed by name) be always red dots--no matter what their standing might be, etc.

I would like the ability to colour by nation/guild. That way CLM and the likes could always be made red, unaligned always red, my guild always green, etc.

how about an /IFF command? It would be like building an /ignore list, only you'd be building lists of people who always appear friendly or hostile to you.

Just add on ability to set IFF for guilds/nations as well as individual players, and that problem's solved.
