Death Star Like Quest

Ok, so I read the READ ME and have not seen an idea specifically for this type of request. It most likely would not be a major change from the way things are done in VO (from a programmers perspective) other than needing a new model. I think this quest would give some relevance to Player owned Capital Ships (aside from just driving around saying, "hey, I got a capital ship").

The quest would have three parts. The building phase and the actual mission. Take a sector like Deneb and GR (the system next to Deneb that has a long name, is hard to spell, and even harder to say). Both factions work on building a "Massive mobile base" with lots of weapon mounts and one heavy gigantor laser that is designed specifically with the death of Capital Ships in mind.

Phase 1: Build
In order for the "Death Star" to be completed, several relevant missions must be completed (like Cargo Procurement x250's, Mineral Harvest, multiple types, x100, etc..). Perhaps there could be several models for this "death star" while it is in progress of being built, to give players an indication how close it is to being done.

Once one sides death star is up and running, the other sides death star goes on hold.

Phase 2: Supply

Once it is built, then it is time to "equip" the death star with ships and weapons for players to use. This will be finite, so the amount of ships created / weapons brought to the station, is all that will be available. This will be a 24/48 hour period.

Phase 3: Attack

The "Death Star" moves slowly through multiple sector on its way into Enemy territory. The ultimate goal is to claim the Deneb system by moving into the sector that contains the Worm Hole leading into enemy territory (Deneb switches color when the death star moves into that sector). The whole time, everyone in game knows the death star is operational (its announced, and every station has the mission "Destroy/Defend Itani/Secro DeathStar".

The Death Stars main laser is a turret and can be destroyed, but only after its shields have been dropped... which will require fighters to hit such a small, target... (or sheer luck of a capital ships flak... if it survives to get close neough). It will require the capital ships to drop its shields, but fighters to destroy the weapon that destroys the capital ships.

So, thats it. My idea of a new, large scale mission. :-) Hope it is usefull for game content.

A bit too close to Star Wars. And Georgie might just sue over petty things like this. But the concept is sound. It generates an event that takes longer than just one login, we just need some motivational force to gather the number of players required for this.

What if there was a line of capital ships which are modular in design and can act independently, and be welded together to form this... Death Star? I know... I watch too many anime.

This would tie in well with expandable territory.

Premise: Nation space can be expanded by conquering sytems. To conquer a system, all of its stations need to be in possession of the respective faction.

A certain number of core systems can not be conquered.

With the number of systems decreasing, prices in the remaining systems increase (less productive capacity, more demand).

Minor factions, with the exception of Corvus, cannot conquer systems for themselves, only for their parent Nation... well, this only applies to UIT.

There was a thread bout this once. Once my boredom level increases to sufficient values, I will look it up.

An excellent idea, antirelic. Making Deneb a "contested/contestible" sector is an idea that's been brought up many many times before, but the "Death-Star" type thing is new.

Of course it couldn't LOOK like the death Star, but it could be a big platform or whatnot with gun emplacements, maybe something along the lines of Homeworld...

Great, then Aspyr/Vivendi/Sierra/Relic will sue :P

But yeah, a big platform would be fun. with lots of docks and gun placements. Mmm, strafing runs...

so... it's basically and armed and mobile station... instead of guard bots it uses on board weapons powered by bots? that have shields? i generally like the idea... especially the idea of needing to use multiple types of ships and team work to take it down... and the fact that it can be destroyed!sure there are some kinks to be worked out but i'll give it an 8.5/10

I used "Death Star" as a frame of reference. You dont have to call it that. You could simply use a "Mobile Base" type of ship. It would function similiarly to a capital ship, except that you could purchase ships while inside it (a limited amount of ships, based on how much is stock piled on board prior to the "attack phase").

Perhaps you could stock this station with Centurions. An easy way to do this would be to make Centurions "purchasable" as a commodity. Give it a commodity size that is only totable by a Bohemeth. The station('s) that would sell "Centurions" would only have a limited number for sale based on on quests that created them to be "purchasable". They would also only be "purchasable" during the "Phase 2".

This would make the "mobile station" have a "fighter contingent" but not unlimited.

The station itself would have "shields" that the Capital Ships would have to take down in order for fighters to attack and destroy the main "anti-capital ship" weapon. Also, the station would be very very very strong (alot of hit points) this would require capital ships to destroy.

Screw a death star, I want them Goliath Cannons.
Feb 13, 2007 toshiro link
But... the Serco deserve something to compete with thoe goliath cannons. As do the UIT, in some form or other. Largish (understatement) stations with guns galore are much easier to implement and balance, I wager.
Feb 14, 2007 bojansplash link
I agree, Serco need stealth technology and Itani need shields.
Yellow peeps dont get squat. They are like Switzerland, trading with everyone and fuelling the war. They dont need an army.
Feb 14, 2007 toshiro link
Oi, watch where you're pointing your insults. It's not like all of us agree(d) with it, or can be held responsible for actions committed by a few.
Feb 15, 2007 bojansplash link
Insults?
Comparing UIT to Switzerland is an insult?

No toshiro. In the grand scheme of things in VO, imho, UIT nation is holding the game back.
There are more yellow players online then both warring factions. They exploit everything serco/itani have to offer without engaging in conflict on either side.
Not to mention faction system exploits.
Its so easy to be a UIT. They actually own VO universe.
Feb 15, 2007 jexkerome link
Of course they own the universe! They hold the secrets to Xirite plating, which both sides use on the War; it's in the UIT's best interests that the War goes on and on and on. And they DO need an army, in case either side decides to conquer them in order to deny Xirite to the other. Not to mention those pesky pirates.

Or Niki.

Back on topic, right now there are similar scenarios in the form of the Nemesis and the Leviathan; groups of people from time to time gather together to take out these large, well-armed-armored-and-protected monsters, though, arguably, the Nemesis is an easier picking than the Levi, and neither is a real challenge once you have the skills and knack for it. So a mission like this would be awesome, but it's still a bit far off.

The way I see it, first you'd send a strike team to take out those pesky Goliath Cannon, and then you could move this mobile fortress in to do some serious damage. An Itani battleforce would move in to fight for the Itani if none can bring capships, and the trickiest thing would be finding the right balance so the players' actions decide the outcome; nothing more boring than an event that can solve itself without player intervention.
Feb 15, 2007 antirelic link
The reason I mention this scenario is for 2 obvious reasons:

1. Reasons for Capital Ships (other than just saying "Hey, I got a cap ship").
2. A huge money sink (cap ships will die in this battle, lots of ships will be destroyed)

This will also get players together for a common goal "Capture Deneb"! Players will mine to build pieces for their "Death Star" and also do transport missions. Capital Ships will escort the Death Star on its journey into hostile territory, and the opposing force will have to have an even greater army to overcome (or simply pour tons of money into re-purchasing ships). There is no garuntee that the defending side will be able to win the onslaught, but perseverence and attrition will eventually take the day.... or will it? Perhaps something can force the UIT to switch sides and bring a strike force of their own in to "liberate" Deneb from faction (x)...
Feb 16, 2007 bojansplash link
There is just a small question of consistency with the backstory when Deneb is concerned. Itani have Goliath cannons there. So Serco capturing Deneb is kinda not going to happen. How about we transfer your scenario to Geira. :P

Also, implications of UIT sending a strike force to fight in a serco/itani war would be very severe. If they, as nation, side with one faction it will be an all out war and all UIT systems will find themselves under attack from opposing faction. Somehow i dont think holy cows would enjoy it much.
Feb 16, 2007 antirelic link
The "Death Star" would outclass any threat from "Goliath Cannons". It would have massive MASSIVE amounts of hit points and shield points.

However, it really wouldnt matter what system you compete for, the idea would remain the same.

As far as UIT goes, it wouldnt be a "concerted" UIT effort, instead it would be Secro/Itani hiring "mercenary" UIT to come fight for their side (for alot of credits, but not much along faction standing increase because its a mercenary mission).
Feb 16, 2007 bojansplash link
That sounds plausible. :)

Off-topic:

I must have misunderstood. I assumed you were referring to the (ongoing) weapon deliveries to third-world (and other) countries from Switzerland, as well as Switzerland's (economic and political) role in the Second World War. Both are things I am not proud of, in fact they make me rather sad. Understanding why the latter happened does not change my feelings much.

As such, comparing the entire nation of Switzerland to the solely profit-oriented traits of the UIT hurts my feelings, among other reasons because I do not believe that the military industry is a 'productive' industry, and I know of quite a few people who think likewise. In short, I would like you to not generalize against Switzerland.

That said, back on-topic:

The point bojan brings up about the location of the goliath cannons is valid, but then Border Skirmish would not make any sense because the cannons could just take out the incoming Serco fleets. What would make more sense is that the goliath cannons be either limited in range to one sector, or be moved back one system. This way, they would not interfere with the 'Death Star' suggestion, or Border Skirmish.
Feb 20, 2007 bojansplash link
No offense intended toshiro. It was just the first correlation that came to mind.

And, true about goliath cannons.
Their location is undisclosed /unknown/ so we can assume thay are unable to cover B-12 wh sector in Deneb.
Feb 20, 2007 jexkerome link
Well, backstory suggests the Goliath Cannon are in Deneb B-12; however, I have a feeling that something will happen to them (i.e. be destroyed) when we are finally able to fight over systems and stations, or maybe they'll stay as an obstacle to be removed before the conquest can proceed. You go in and destroy them, and if you capture the system you capture and repair them; if you fail to capture the system the Itani keep control of them and repair them, or maybe players will have to bring in the repair parts so they can be repaired.

Union pilots should be able to fight, but as mercenaries, and thus, while fighting in any War sector, they should receive faction hits depending on which side they are attacking; of course, soon no one will be able to be liked by all sides, so this issue may become moot.

Funny Anti. Goliath Cannons shoot miniature black holes. I'd like to see your death star handle them apples! ;)
