Viral Control

Mar 26, 2007 googfroog link
As i was playing I, being itani, tried to enter serco space in a futile attempt to undertake some serco missions and try to raise my faction standing with them, needless to say the minute entered the first serco sector I was blown to tiny bits.

So, my idea is a special defense weapon that when equipped, will automatically send out a "virus" to hijack all ships posing a threat to you in the sector, wich in turn temporarily stop locks up the ships controls to stop them from attacking you. When players are affected by the virus pulse it immediatly sets there speed to 0 kps to stop them from running into things.
However, any player inside a space station or in the middle of makeing a jump will be unaffected. After using the virus pulse you must allow it at least 15 minutes to recharge and it CANNOT be used in a duel.

Also, since the virus is in the form of a radio wave being emmitted from your ship, you can try to outrun the virus signal or hide behind an astreroid to avoid its effects.

Using it in an Ion storm would mess it up and using it in your own home systems while under no threat gives you a hefty fine for slowing up commerce. Plus, there is a chance that the virus becomes self aware and turns on you, or decides to do its own thing and makes the surrounding NPCs fly away somewhere else.

So? whaddaya think?

Overcomplicated and prone to so much abuse that's not even funny to debate it.

Bot in nation space, raise standing, problem solved.

(I wish I could do the same with corps!)

googfroog, this may be your first post in the Suggestions forum, so I will be gentle.

First, welcome to Vendetta-Online. :D

Second, listen to Syylk - you can bot in nation-space once you ditch the strike force. Find a nice open sector and you can work your standing back up quickly. I would first recommend working up some levels and getting some combat skill before attempting this if this is your first time playing.

Third, that idea is utter crap. Essentially you've given an insta-kill device to anyone else in the sector, or even yourself. Imagine that device being used on you. You come to a stop, your controls lock up, and your enemy leisurely closes in and blows the crap out of you without even a "by your leave." Then he takes your cargo, steals your girl, and clones your cell phone before you know it.

So I gotta but the big "Rejected" stamp on this idea, but remember, that's just my own personal opinion.

yes, I realize that, which is why the level requirments to use this virus would be quite high, and there is like a 40-60% chance that the virus doesnt work or it turns on you and continues attacking. Plus you could always purchase viral defence at your local space sta.

At least have it work on bots instead of people then.

LOL, wtf?
edit: You bring up a cool idea, but it's only possible in battlestar galactica...
edit #2: Using it on bots would be bad too, abusers would just keep hitting it in bot sectors with good xp bots, and just keep killing them over and over again. Or, have a group of people keep switching alts to mine in a bot filled sector, and not worry about attackers... It really is just too much, Syylk is right...

At the risk of being flamed, what about bots not attacking if you have no offensive weapons. Allow transit and mining/trading ships through ... as long as your standing is not KOS.

Flame proof helmet ON.

Just one thing ... the botting in Serco space ... would that reduce the Itani standing while increasing Serco? Or just increase Serco? ... Just curious.
Mar 26, 2007 incarnate link
You realize that the Serco and Itani are *at war*, right?
Mar 26, 2007 jackscream link
Yes. Am aware of it. Just wondering whether increasing Serco rating automatically reduces Itani rating.

Can an Itani or Serco have a high rating from both factions?
Mar 26, 2007 mr_spuck link
yeah you can
Mar 26, 2007 moldyman link
They are at war but who cares when itani can buy proms and Serco can buy valks? Having good standing on both sides has no gameplay downsides.

Yeah this weapon would be way too powerful no matter the level requirements, the probabilities and range.

Well no... if you give it a range of say 10m... and a 10-15% chance of connecting (man I hate anything that is just plain random) and drains a full HeavyBat, then MAYBE it wouldn't be TOO overpowered, but still it's not a good idea.

Getting into Serco space is not that hard, though it is way easier getting into Itani space (no faaaiiirrr!!!). And if you really want to get there to raise you Serco standing then you can. Just jump past the sector, do a few jumps in the empty sectors then kill the few seekers that are still on your arse. Then bot for a few hours.

@incarnate: Yes they are at war, do you have any updates on when the new faction systems come out?

I suggest we get WEAPONS on our ships, so we can shoot back.
Oh, and turbo boosters, so we can run blockades like that.

Anyway, at first glance it's not really that bad a suggestion, but it's very singleplayer-like, and would be a huge neuseance once certain in-duh-viduals get a hold of it.
Mar 27, 2007 toastmaster_g link
Hmmmm, I guess you're right, it is quite overpowered as a pulse weapon at least,

But what about instead of a pulse weapon it was a non homing cord that shoots from your ship which attachs its to the enemy ship and turns it into a friendly bot?

That way it would be harder to actually hit something and it would only work on one enemy at a time, and it wouldnt work on other players at all if they buy virus protection softwre for their ship.
Mar 27, 2007 googfroog link
Good idea G.
Mar 27, 2007 LeberMac link
No. something like that should never work on other players, I still don't like the idea.

Maybe if it only worked on the low-level hive bots (not NPC's), and when you did it, every other bot in the sector immediately came to attack you. Then it MIGHT be ok.
Mar 27, 2007 Zed1985 link
Well we had already discussed reporgramming bots, but it involved first disabling it then capturing it while it's buddies try to kick your arse.
