Passive HUD Ship Identification

I'm still a noob, but I have lots of suggestions.

I was in a group with a friend and had trouble finding him even when I saw his white dot on the radar in front of me.

I was also doing an escort mission and wasn't sure exactly where my ships were. They were kinda far away so I couldn't see them too well.

Maybe I'm just too new to the game, but a passive id system would really appeal to me. I made up a bunch of concept images.

In all fairness, I did get the idea from when I played Eve. I was always looking at people's icons, looking for pirates & friends.

So these hud overlays would appear passively (when the object is not targeted).

Nice job on the mockup art. I like this idea.

This actually ties in with another suggestion.

Ability for members of the group to assign a group target. Concentrate firepower on a specific target.

One of the members would just target an enemy as usual, then press a button to 'broadcast target' to the rest of the group.

[edit]Perhaps you could even target loot. I found a Collector CPU for a member of my group and didn't have room in my cargo. It was kinda tricky pointing it out to him.[/edit]

yeah, the targeting system leaves something to be desired as it is now.

sorry, this isn't a very helpful comment, but i have no ideas at the moment.

I like this idea alot too, we need something that will just enable us to see more clearly whats around us then with the radar.

Could even add options to enable/disable the feature.

You could even use the same ship-type icons on the radar:

Okay, enough with Photoshop. Time to play.

Nice. This should go in Quick'n'Dirty.

VO could generally steal a lot from EVE. the games have some similarity and eve's combat interface is much more refined due to more people developing it and for a longer time ofcourse.

Examples for those who haven't played EVE?

In this shot you can see a few examples of Eve's passive HUD id:
http://internetgames.about.com/library/screen/nevescr11.htm

The guy with the green star is a corporation member (same as a guild member here).

The guys with the + symbols are neutral NPCs. The thicker the plus symbol, the bigger the ship. When you are far enough away, only the plus renders, the ship doesnt render at all. And there is a minimum size all the hud elements get.
[Edit]Correction. All the hud id elements are a static size.[/edit]

There are other symbols too. The circle with the arrow is a jumpgate. Similar to our wormholes.

In this one you can see some purple guys:

Purple means they are in your 'fleet' aka 'group'. So in this case, their green star turns purple if a corp member joins a fleet with you. I don't remember what the yellow means.

Finally, this one shows their overview window. The other 2 shots had the overview closed for some reason.

It shows the distance to every object in the system (you can toggle which ones you want to appear). Eve doesn't have a cool double radar like VO, so when an object goes off screen, it's icon stays at the edge of the screen closest to the object. VOs radar method is superior :)

yep the overview, that is showing objects on the current grid with their distances and velocities, standings, pilot states (your gang, corp etc) and many appliable filters is really practical. you can also set it do display certain static objects in the solar system.

gang leaders can flag certain targets or travel spots but that is not used much because people on gang ops are usually required to use voice comms anyway.

oh yea eve's in station interface is much more comfortable too, you just open different resizable ingame windows for market, fitting, hangar space, ship cargo, mission log and so on. you can have everything on screen at once and shift stuff per select and drag+drop.

what eve lacks is the fun twitch combat of VO, the interface is really good. used to be pretty crap and cumbersome in the beginning, too though :D

Was doing some more thinking about this, and have another concept image.

Image 1
Ship 1 : How it would look in Eve. The size of the box never changes regardless of how close/far the object is. Not a fan of this method.
Ship 2 : NPC ship. '*' denotes NPC. A group member has assigned it as a target. It is too far to see, but the box around it has reached it's minimum size (there is 9 pixels between the boxes incase a 3rd icon is wanted down the line). [EDIT]Aren't all grey ships NPCs? Asterisk may not be needed[/EDIT]
Ship 3 : Just an enemy NPC

Image 2-4
Top to bottom: UIT, Serco, Itani
Left to right: Friendly group member, Neutral buddy, hostile

This things are really cool in EvE, but how would you apply them to the 3D targeting box? I find the 3D box is much more useful in determining orientation than the 2D one.
Jun 01, 2007 Proton link
Well these 2D overlays would only appear on ships that are not targeted.

As soon as you target a ship, its passive overlay would disappear and you would get the standard 3D or 2D box that you normally get.

[EDIT]Got a new concept for the radar. Needed to show the type of character & it's reputation via outlines ( Friendly (Green), Neutral (Grey), Hostile (Red) )

This is a really great idea! I find myself going around, wondering what all the ships are, and wondering if one is going to identify me, and find me an enemy before I do... You'd also think that a technologically advanced culture would have something like this on their HUDs.

How are you, CCP? All your idea are belong to us.

I love this so damn much (the icons attached to the target boxes). Not sure about the radar, though.

I'm sure that the actual icons could be modified by changing the skins, after this sort of thing was introduced. So, a skin could be made that was essentially the way things are now (just red, green dots 'n stuff) or you could modify the icons to whatever picture made the most sense for you.
